Speed Skaters

So I've been glued to the TV watching the winter olympics....and I've been watching this controversy in the US men's team. Apparently Hedrick and Shani Davis are about ready to kill each other. I keep trying to figure out which one I like, and who I think is "right" in this situation. I was a big Hedrick fan, because he's good (and hot), but Shani, with his shyness, and barrier-breaking medal, appeals to me as well. Anyone got any insight?

Here's my impressions:

1. The media are making a bigger deal out of this "feud" than it really is. (Well, that's their job, I guess. That's what sells.)

2. From what I understand, Davis usually doesn't participate in the team event in question. Expecting him to spend time preparing for it (at the expense of his own events) just so Hedrick could possibly win a 5th gold medal doesn't sound reasonable to me. As someone pointed out, there are other athletes who were put on the US team specifically for that race, so they're the ones who should do it.

3. Hedrick may be a good athlete, but I'm not too impressed with him as a person. I saw an interview with him; he was discussing being a Texan and other "upbeat" subjects, and the whole time he was talking, he was shaking his head from side to side (what you usually do when you're saying "No"). I thought that was rather odd body language. Of course, being a southerner, he may have been raised with that kind of "self-effacing" behavior (just speculating), but it just wasn't pleasant to watch. Davis just seems a bit more authentic to me.

Thanks Kitty. I think you hit the nail on the head. In the end, I decided that I was just going to root for Joey Cheek.
