Fun Observances  ( 2 )

National Girlfriend Day

August 1 is Girlfriend’s Day. It is unclear whether the unknown creators of this holiday wanted it to be a day for people to honor their female friends or for them to celebrate their female romantic partners.

girlfriends-day-fun.jpg

Either way, take this day to tell the special women in your life that they mean a lot to you, and that you love, honor, and respect them.

The term girlfriend first came into use in 1863 as a way to describe a woman's female friend in youth. It was not until the 1920s when the word started being used as a way to describe a person's female romantic partner.

How to Celebrate?

While we think that every day of the year should be your girlfriend's day, Girlfriend's Day is a good excuse to do something extra special for that extraordinary woman in your life. Here are some ways you can celebrate this day:

  • Do something special for your partner to show them how much you care and love them. Maybe surprise your partner with a gift and dinner? Or take them out to see their favorite band perform or arrange for a romantic lunch picnic in the park.
  • Don’t have a partner? Why not celebrate your girlfriends with a girls night out or a girls only party.
  • Watch Girlfriends, an American sitcom that follows the lives of four friends.

Did You Know…

…that in the fashion world, girlfriend style refers to a type of clothing for men that is borrowed from women's clothing?

International Beer Day

The first Friday of August every year is International Beer Day. The unofficial holiday celebrates the art and science of brewing beer and encourages people to try out new flavors of beers.

international-beer-day-fun.jpg

International Beer Day was created in 2007 by Jesse Avshalomov, Evan Hamilton, Aaron Araki, and Richard Hernandez, in San Francisco, United States as a way to bring friends and strangers together over pints of beer. Between 2007 and 2012, the holiday was celebrated on August 5, but due to popular demand that the day be held on a Friday, the organizers changed the date to the first Friday of August.

Multicultural Drink

Beer is an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting sugars found in cereal grains such as wheat or barley. Many beers around the world are brewed with hops, herbs, or fruits that add flavor to the drink.

Thought to be the world's oldest beverage still consumed today, beer has been drunk by almost all cultures around the world throughout human history. Today, beer is the third most consumed beverage in the world only after water and tea.

How to Celebrate?

  • If you brew your own beer, share your brews with friends and family and get their feedback.
  • Spend your evening at a bar trying out new types of beer.
  • Take a brewery tour and spend time learning the science behind beer making.

Did You Know…

…that there are craters on Mars and on the Moon called beer?

SCENE: My teenage daughter and me in the car.

Lauren: Dad, do you know what the most commonly used letter in a girl’s name is?

Me: Hmm, is it a consonant or a vowel? (Silence.) Please tell me you know what consonants and vowels are.

Lauren: You’re no fun, Dad. Forget it.

Me: What is a vowel?

Lauren: OK, OK. A vowel is … ahh … eh … well, oh … uh …

Me: Close enough.

I was really embarrassed when my wife caught me playing with my son’s train set by myself.

In a moment of panic, I threw a bed sheet over it.

I think I managed to cover my tracks.

Teacher: What is an evangelist?

Student: Someone who plays the evangelo.

For 98 percent of the students at the school where my wife teaches, English is a second language. But that didn't stop them from giving her Christmas cards.

Still, their enthusiasm for the occasion sometimes exceeded their grasp of English. Among the many cards that flooded her desk were:

"Happy Birthday, Grandma,"

"Get Well Soon," and

"Congratulations on Passing Your Driving Test!"
