Malaise
Ever feel that general feeling of dissatisfaction, like you can't overcome basic obstacles? I'm feeling that way...not about my own life, but about the US. I think that comes from living through the 70's...high oil prices, rotten foreign policy, hated by the world.Seems that we're getting there again. Gas prices have doubled in the last year, and will likely go higher still. We're engaged in a war that looks more and more like Vietnam every day. And now we have this hurricane that makes us look like a third world country. Is it possible that the whole hurricane emergency was badly mishandled? I hope so, because the alternate answer is even worse. That answer is that our forces, and our government, are stretched so thin, and so strapped for cash, that we CAN'T respond in a timely manner. We now have a multi-billion dollar project to rebuild the Gulf Coast. That money will come from the already hemmorhaging Federal Government. When will we reach the point where we can borrow no more? When will we lose our ability to attract money from foreigners, because that's what keeps us afloat now.Of course, things could be worse. We could be shifting hard right socially. Oh yeah, that's happening too. And now Rehnquist died (good riddance), so Bush gets to appoint another conservative. What if Roberts and the new bozo he nominates are closet fascists? Roberts seems pretty innocuous, but is he? Sorry I'm so depressing. It's because I'm worried. Happy f**king Labor Day.
