JamesSavik Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 All of the disasters that Mississippi has had to deal with in recent years has left us a bit punchy. This is the flood marks on the wall at Vicksburg- this one should top them all. This has had people busy sandbagging and reinforcing levees. Needless to say nobody is happy about it. This little guys father's farm is sunk. One of the hazards that floods bring is current. It can undermine roads and foundations. In this case a levee is being over-topped. The action of the water can erode the damn and make it fail. Animals suffer from the flood. This raccoon has decided this bird feeder is for him. Because of the floods people are seeing animals that are ordinarily very elusive. Foxes are almost never seen in the daylight in this area.
Red_A Posted May 20, 2011 Posted May 20, 2011 (edited) The Mississippi at Vicksburg, has peaked at 57 feet and one or two inches. More importantly the Mississippi @:- Knox Landing (Old River Crossing) has Crested Red River Landing (Morganza Spillway) has Crested Thus Baton Rouge and New Orleans earth levees will not be overtopped, and barring failure due to extended water logging, or a Hurricane, both are safe. The overflow or spill into the Atchafalaya River, has been steady for two days, and although the water levels in the basin will probably not stabilisefor another 2 or 3 days it looks as most (except Butte La Rose [ may flood]) will be safe.
