    At that point in their relationship, the house had not yet become entirely Mihai's kingdom, and Lorenzo had not yet learned to call obedience what, only a few days earlier, he would have called shame. There were still gestures that happened for the first time. Small gestures. Almost domestic ones. Coffee prepared with exactly the right amount of sugar. A cup handed back without a word of thanks. A footprint silently wiped from the floor. A key placed in another man's open palm.
