“So, how does the whole Guardians thing work anyway?” Sam asked an hour or so later, when Blair’s arms were wrapped around him tightly, as if Blair was afraid that Sam would take off running the minute he let go of him. “It’s a job,” Blair shrugged. “More intense than some others, but a job nevertheless.” “Well...” Sam shifted slightly next to him, the back of his head resting on Blair’s shoulder. “What do you do, exactly?” “We...” Blair entwined their fingers together. “Okay, eac

When he parked his car next to Blair’s house, it was 3:10. He looked at his palm and blinked when he saw that the cut didn’t look as bad anymore. In fact, it looked a lot smaller and it stopped bleeding. “I guess he was right...” he muttered with slight amusement. He got out of the car and walked towards the front door of the house. He was about to ring the doorbell when the door opened and a young blonde woman with a hefty size shoulder bag stepped outside with Blair following her. Sa

He walked inside the house and was almost knocked off his feet when Specter ambushed him suddenly. “Oh...” was all he said while the dog licked and nuzzled him furiously. “I guess Blair’s scent is okay tonight,” he thought with relief, petting the dog. “Wow,” Desmond said without looking up. “You are home before midnight, that is...” he finally looked up and stopped talking. “Holy hell, kid, what have you done to your hair?” he asked a few seconds later. “You don’t like it?”

Blair wasn’t exaggerating when he said the deli served great food. It was amazing. It was quite far away, Blair was right about that too. They had to drive almost half an hour to get there, and after Sam glanced at the speedometer, he thought that if he were ever go there by himself, it would probably take him more than an hour to get there. Blair was going at least twice over the speed limit. Sam didn’t speed himself much; not because he wasn’t sure how good of a driver he was (he could drive j

Desmond was smoking lazily, his feet up on the chair, his nose buried in the paper. The sliding glass door was wide open and Sam could see Specter trying to nail several butterflies at once in the tall grass outside. Gabriel was making food, as he usually did in the mornings. “Oh,” Sam said when he saw him. “I thought you were at work...” “It’s Sunday,” Gabriel said, stirring something in the frying pan. “Hungry?” “No,” Sam glanced at the clock. “I am...” “Taking off again?”

I did. Then I spent next 2 hours talking to my fish... 😔 Going with lesser evil from then on.

Yeah, it was my attempt at brilliant sarcasm... I blame my cold medicine 😐

If I'd given all the answers right now, you'd be disappointed, admit it 😎

True. Plus it could be creepy as hell also...

“Kid, it’s twelve-thirty,” Desmond said tiredly when Sam walked through the front door. “Sorry,” Sam said quickly and bent down to hug Specter. He frowned when the dog suddenly stopped dead in its tracks and stared at him with confusion. “What is it, Specter?” Sam asked in a puzzled voice. The dog tentatively wagged his tail and took a careful step towards Sam’s outstretched hand. He cautiously sniffed at the fingers and back-pedaled rather quickly. Sam frowned deeper. “

When they got inside the little store at the gas station, Sam realized that the clerk behind the counter was the same one who said, “You break it, you buy it!” to him this morning. The clerk blinked very rapidly the minute he looked up and saw Blair. He looked trapped, desperate panic splashing in his eyes. “His car blew a tire,” Blair said, ignoring the clerk’s expression. “It’s just down the road,” he pointed with his thumb behind his back. “Fix it,” he said shortly, and the clerk blinked

Actually it's quite usual for Desmond to run low on gas -- even in the first book his fuel tank was almost empty (when Gabriel went to his house where Julian was waiting for him). He'd never use his own vehicle while observing his marks -- someone could remember him &/or he'd end up on a traffic camera. He does have an ability (hidden extra); it'll be clear in a few chapters. To be honest, his ability wasn't quite clear to me in the very beginning, that's why I haven't clarified it earlier 😶

Yes, his eyes changing color is not a good thing -- it'll be explained soon.

He's not that clueless... (lol) They didn't change their names: nobody knew Desmond's real name, so it wouldn't ring any bell; and nobody cared much about Rayhe & Sam, so it didn't matter.

The play turned out to be quite entertaining, and after it was finished, Sam and Eve had migrated to the other area of the park where they discovered jugglers and mimes. Sam didn’t really like the mimes – they always gave him the creeps – but Eve seemed to enjoy the show, so he just shrugged to himself and watched the silent performers with a small sigh. ...They spent the entire day in that park, and Sam didn’t look at his watch even once. He finally did it after he realized that it

The car whined and stopped dead in its tracks the minute Sam pulled to the gas pump. “Desmond,” he muttered, pulling the keys out of the ignition. “One of those days...” He shook his head instead of finishing the phrase, and got out of the car. When he walked inside the little store at the gas station, he thought that he’d better buy some sort of an air freshener – the inside of Desmond’s car stank of stale cigarette smoke. Everything else was fine – everything was clean, there was no mess,

He woke up at 9:30 in the morning, and his first thought before he even opened his eyes was, “Call Eve!” He smiled in the same sheepish manner as he did last night, opened his eyes, and got out of bed. He found the shirt he wore last night and shoved his fingers into the breast pocket. It was empty, and Sam immediately broke in cold sweat. Did he manage to lose it...? He almost ripped off the pocket, trying to find that paper maybe hiding between the seams. There was nothing there. He cursed des

Sam slowly drank his cappuccino, looking at several books at once. He was trying to figure out which one to get. At first, he decided to get all of them – those were art books, and he loved art. Then he looked at them more closely and realized that quite a few pictures in all the books were the same. Therefore, he was sitting by one of the round tables in the bookstore’s café, all but scratching his head for the last hour or so, trying to figure out which book would be the best choice. He bl

“Come on, Specter! Come on! Please...? Oh, Specter, just do it, please... Specter, get back here!” Desmond peeled his eyes open, almost positive that he was dreaming about something in his past, even though he could not remember this particular conversation. “Specter, please...!” he heard through the open window and blinked several times. So it’s not a dream, he thought. Then he remembered about the dog and swore softly. He glanced at the clock. Great, he thought bitterly. It’s three in

It definitely wasn't a great idea, true. But it wasn't as disastrous as it it might seem. No, Desmond didn't have a bad experience with dogs. It's not like he dislikes them -- he just doesn't really care about them. He interacts with animals just fine -- he'll even play ball with this dog eventually.

Desmond, Gabriel, and Sam return in this sequel to Specter's Gamble, which takes place two years after the events in the first book. (book II in the series)

4 Months Later _________________ “Next time when I say ‘I am driving,’ just give me the damn keys,” Desmond said shortly, his expression gloomier than ever. “Plus, it’s my damn car!” Rayhe glanced at him briefly. “You drive like a maniac,” he said calmly. “Call me crazy, but I would like to live long enough to celebrate my thirty-third birthday.” “By the time we get there, you’ll turn seventy-five,” Desmond snorted. “Seriously, step on it already!” “Stop whining,” R

“Okay,” Desmond said twenty minutes later after the buffoon was securely attached to one of the chairs, his both hands handcuffed behind his back. “Tell me again why I shouldn’t kill this clown?” Sam looked outside through the window, his forehead wrinkling with a tortured frown. He was silent for a minute or two. Desmond waited patiently. “He...” Sam finally said very slowly. “He did something for me... Something good...” he glanced at Desmond. “It was a long time ago,” he muttered. “I.
