Be An Angel Day
August 22 is Be An Angel Day. Established in 1993 by Jaune Howard Feldman, the day encourages people to be angels to those in need.
In many religions, angels are supernatural spirits that are thought to be responsible for protecting humans.
The day reminds us that even though we can't be actual angels, we can emulate the kindness they are known for. Being kind and good to our fellow human beings is not hard - all we need to do is to stop thinking about ourselves for a while (or a day) and to think about how we can make the world a nicer and kinder place.
How to Celebrate?
Be kind to others. Do something to help a stranger.
Do random acts of kindness without any expectations of reciprocation. For example, give up your seat on the bus or train to someone else, pay for the coffee the person behind you may buy at the coffee shop, or leave a small gift in your neighbor's mailbox.
Volunteer your time and money to a charitable organization.
Do something that will bring a smile to the face of people.
If you know of someone who is going through a difficult time, give them your support and let them know that you are there for them. Help them out in their difficult times.
If someone is being an angel to you, thank them, and let them know that their kindness is being appreciated.

Why did I get divorced? Well, last week was my birthday. My wife didn't wish me a happy birthday. My parents forgot and so did my kids. I went to work and even my colleagues didn't wish me a happy birthday. As I entered my office, my secretary said, "Happy birthday, boss!" I felt so special. She asked me out for lunch. After lunch, she invited me to her apartment. We went there and she said, "Do you mind if I go into the bedroom for a minute?" "Okay," I said. She came out 5 minutes later with a birthday cake, my wife, my parents, my kids, my friends, & my colleagues all yelling, "SURPRISE!!!" while I was waiting on the sofa... naked.

Spumoni Day
August 21 is Spumoni Day, so treat yourself to a slice (or two) of the delicious layered Italian ice cream dessert.
Originating in Naples, Italy, Spumoni is a dessert made of layers of ice cream that are mixed with candied fruits, whipped cream, and nuts. Served in slices, spumoni traditionally includes chocolate, pistachio, and cherry flavored ice cream, though sometimes raspberry or strawberry ice cream can be used as a substitute for cherry.
Christmas Dessert
Popular among Italian immigrants in the United States, Canada, and Argentina, and it is believed that Spumoni was the inspiration for Neapolitan ice cream - the three layered dessert made up of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream.
In many parts of the United States, Spumoni is considered a Christmas time dessert and is usually paired with cookies of some kind.
The unofficial holiday is also sometimes called National Spumoni Day in the U.S.
How to Celebrate?
In mood for some ice cream? Why not visit your local ice cream shop for a big slice of spumoni?
Can't find spumoni where you are? Don't despair, making spumoni from scratch is easy. All you need is chocolate, pistachio, and cherry ice cream, homemade or store bought, some nuts, candied fruits, and whipped cream. Layer the ice creams mixed with the nuts and fruits and the whipped cream one-by-one in a loaf pan, or any other mold of your choice, and let set. Unmold, slice, and enjoy. Don't forget to share it with family and friends.

My wife's labor went relatively smoothly and, when it seemed appropriate, I inserted the blank tape and began recording. Shortly thereafter, our baby was born and we all heard the first cry. The doctor held up the baby and, with tape rolling, loudly proclaimed, "Wow, will you look at the scrotum on him!"

Chocolate Pecan Pie Day
Don't wait till the holiday season to treat yourself and your loved ones to the dessert that many believe is southern United States on a plate - chocolate pecan pie. Enjoy a slice or two of this decadent dessert on August 20, or Chocolate Pecan Pie Day.
A variant of the pecan pie, chocolate pecan pie is made by baking a mix of pecans, chocolate, eggs, and sugar syrup or honey over a pie crust.
A Rich History
Considered to be a quintessential southern US dessert and usually served during Thanksgiving and at Christmas time, the pecan pie is thought to have evolved from treacle pies popular during the middle ages in Europe and molasses pies popular in the U.S. during the 19th century.
Very little is known about the invention of the pecan pie - no mention of it was made in cookbooks until the early 20th century, but some food historians credit the French in New Orleans for creating it after being introduced to the pecan nut by Native Americans.
Healthful Nuts
Native to Mexico and the southern United States, pecans are some of the healthiest nuts out there. They are a good source of proteins and magnesium, and are full of antioxidants. They are also known to lower the risk of heart disease and some forms of cancer.
How to Celebrate?
With lots of chocolate pecan pie, of course! With all the health benefits pecans have to offer, you can indulge in a slice or 2 guiltlessly.
Make a chocolate pecan pie from scratch and share with your family and friends. Try different variations of this classic. Add a dash of cayenne for a Mexican twist or a splash of bourbon to elevate the flavors.
Don't want to make a pie? What about making a chocolate pecan pie cheesecake or a chocolate pecan pie milkshake?
Did You Know…
…that pecans are technically drupes not nuts? Drupes are fruits where the seeds are covered by the flesh of the fruit. The seed is the edible part of the fruit and is called the pecan nut. Coffee, pistachios, coconuts, and olives are all drupes.

World Photo Day
August 19 is World Photo Day. The unofficial holiday, which is also sometimes known as Photo Day or World Photography Day, is an annual celebration of the art and science of photography.
Created in 2009 by Australian photographer Korske Ara, the day encourages people to pick up their camera and be inspired by other fellow photographers to take pictures and share them with the world.
A Modern Innovation
While photography is a fairly modern innovation, the human desire to capture moments and memories and share them with others is as old as the history of humankind itself. One of the oldest attempts to record events was through the discovery of the camera obscura. It is a device with a hole through which light passes and creates an inverted image of the scene outside. Known to have been used as a way to recreate events - artists would sketch or trace the image in order to record it - for centuries, the earliest records of camera obscura date back to 400 BCE China.
Photography, as we know it today, did not come about the early 1900s when people found a way to permanently capture a scene on a surface using chemicals that reacted to light. The earliest surviving photograph dates back to 1826 or 1827. It was taken by French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce. The photograph is a view of Niépce's estate in Burgundy, France.
A Hobby of Many
Cameras and photography went through a lot of technological innovations in the 20th century. Today, the availability of affordable and high-quality digital cameras has made photography a widespread hobby.
How to Celebrate?
Whether you are an amateur, a professional, or someone who spends most of his or her day taking phone pictures and sharing them with your social media followers, World Photography Day is an easy holiday to celebrate. Here are some ways you can enjoy this day:
Learn and read more about the history and science behind photography.
If you have always wanted to learn photography, maybe today is the time to start taking lessons.
If you are a photographer, why not volunteer your time to teach your craft and trade to others?

Mail Order Catalog Day
August 18 is Mail Order Catalog Day, an annual holiday that celebrates the old-fashioned way of shopping by choosing items from a printed catalog, and ordering and paying for it through the post/ mail or over the telephone.
It is believed, that the unofficial holiday commemorates the anniversary of the day in 1872 when American entrepreneur Aaron Montgomery Ward sent out the first modern mail order catalog to customers in Chicago.
Mail order catalogs or mail order catalogues are a type of direct marketing strategy where companies can communicate directly and personally with the customers. The catalog is a publication, not unlike a magazine, that lists all the items available to buy from a business and their prices.
Colorful History
Mail order shopping has a colorful history. Historians believe that one of the first shopping catalogs was produced in the late 15th century, when Italian publisher, Aldus Manutius of Venice, published a list of books his company - Aldine Press - was printing.
In 1667, William Lucas published a gardening catalog in England, and in 1744, Benjamin Franklin became one of the first people in America to print a catalog from which people could choose to buy books and scientific publications.
Mail order shopping did not become popular in the United States until the early 19th century when farmers and book publishers started taking advantage of the newly-started national postal service and an expanded railway system to sell seeds and books all over the country. By the 20th century, mail order catalogs selling anything from groceries to full-fledged homes became a big part of daily mail received by people.
Today, with the advances in Internet technology, printed mail order catalogs are quickly being replaced by online shopping.
How to Celebrate?
Order something from a mail order catalog. Yes, despite the decline in their popularity, some companies still publish mail order catalogs. Pick one up and spend some time going through it today.
Visit your local thrift store of flea market and look for vintage mail order catalogs. For many years, businesses spent a lot of money and time creating the perfect catalog. Today, they are not only a glimpse of life back in time, but are also highly coveted for their artistic value.
Did You Know…
…that the Hammacher Schlemmer is the oldest mail order catalog still in print today? The catalog was first printed in 1848 and sells hardware and tools.

National Thrift Shop Day
August 17 is Thrift Shop Day. It is a perfect holiday for those of you who like a good bargain and are a fan of old, vintage items.
The origins of the holiday are unknown, but we can assume that the inventor of this unofficial holiday aimed to encourage people to visit their local thrift shop and to bring home some secondhand and thrifted goodies.
Old and Cheap
A thrift store is a store that sells old, used and vintage items for discounted prices. A thrift store is also sometimes called a secondhand shop, a consignment shop, or a resale shop. In many parts of the world, charities run thrift stores as a way to raise money for their cause. Thrifting - the act of buying cheap clothing and household items from thrift stores, is not only money saving but is also environmentally friendly.
How to Celebrate?
If your version of a fun day includes sifting through dusty, old things to find treasure, then here are some ways that you can celebrate Thrift Shop Day:
Visit your local thrift stores and spend some time browsing through their wares. Who knows, you might end up getting home a priceless work of art!
Host a thrift shop party. Decorate your venue like a thrift store with things you found at a secondhand shop. Ask your guests to wear clothes from a thrift store and swap items you found in a consignment shop.

National Tell a Joke Day
On August 16, make everyone around you giggle, guffaw, chortle, cackle or in other words, laugh, by telling them a joke because it is Tell A Joke Day.
While the origins of this hilarious day are unknown, we can all safely assume that the creator of this unofficial holiday was aiming to make the world a happier place by encouraging people to tell and listen to jokes.
Different Jokes
A joke can be of different types. They can be verbal, as in the case of a one-liner, a whole story or in the form a question and answer, where the answer provides the humor. Jokes can also be physical such as in the case of a prank or a practical joke, where the act rather than the words provide the humor. Either way, the main purpose of a joke is to entertain by providing humor, even though jokes can sometimes be used to make serious commentary like in the case of satire.
Jokes have been an integral part of human history and many great minds have spent time and energy in trying to understand what makes jokes funny.
The day is known in the US as National Tell A Joke Day, and not to be confused with International Joke Day on July, 1.
How to Celebrate?
Every time you meet someone on this day, tell them a joke. Just make sure the jokes are appropriate to the setting.
Pick up a joke book and spend your lunch hour reading it.
Watch your favorite comedians do their thing either on TV or on stage and partake in a few hours of humorous entertainment.

National Relaxation Day
On August 15, take a day off from your daily routine, put your feet up and relax because it is Relaxation Day.
The origins of this holiday are unknown, though it is thought that the holiday began as National Slacker Day in Britain.
In the hustle bustle of their daily lives, most people often forget to slow down and take some time for themselves. This can create stress and other stress-related health issues like high blood pressure and heart problems.
Take a Deep Breath
Relaxation Day is a reminder that sometimes it is okay to take a deep breath, slow down and take it easy - not only does relaxation make you feel better about yourself, it can have long-term health benefits too!
So on this day, do things that help you relax and de-stress. Kick back and enjoy a cold beverage in your backyard, read a book while curled up with a hot cup of tea, sleep the whole day long, or take a warm bath and spend the day in your pajamas watching TV.
How to Celebrate?
Relax! Do whatever that you feel relaxes you, even if it is for a short while.
Use this day to do a digital detox. Unplug the computer, put away the phone and stay away from all social media. With no work emails to fret over and no social dramas to be bothered with, you will feel the stress melt away.
Go to the spa for a day of pampering and some "me" time.
Take a leisurely walk in the park. Stop and smell the roses, walk barefoot on the grass, have a small picnic by yourself, or read a book while people-watching.
Learn a new skill like knitting or playing golf.
Did You Know...
...that in physics and chemistry, relaxation is a concept that refers to the movement of a system or a process from a state of disorder or disruption to equilibrium?

Creamsicle Day
Sweltering in the summer heat? Need something to refreshing to cool down? Then just walk to your closest ice cream shop and treat yourself to a cold and delicious creamsicle (or two) because it is Creamsicle Day!
Celebrated annually on August 14, this unofficial holiday with unknown origins honors the creamsicle, a refreshing summertime treat on a stick. The original creamsicles were made of vanilla ice cream covered by iced orange juice. In recent years, creative ice cream makers have replaced the outer orange fruit juice layer with other flavors like blueberry, strawberry, and grape.
Also Known As...
Although Creamsicle is a brand name ice cream in the United States, any ice cream covered by a layer of iced fruit juice on a flat wooden stick is popularly called a creamsicle.
Due to the popularity of the Popsicle, which is a brand of frozen beverages, people sometimes use the word popsicle to refer to the creamsicle. Creamsicles are also sometimes generically called ice pops in the United States and in Canada and ice lolly in the United Kingdom.
How to Celebrate?
Treat everyone in your family with creamsicles.
Make your own creamsicles and share them with family and friends. Maybe come up with some interesting flavor combinations to try out?
Make other creamsicle-inspired treats. What about baking creamsicle cupcakes or making a creamsicle smoothie?
Did You Know...

International Left Handers Day
August 13 is Left Handers Day. Created in 1992 by the Left Handers Club as a way to celebrate left handers, the unofficial holiday aims to ‘raise awareness of the advantages and disadvantage left handers face.’
The day also encourages businesses and governments to be more left handed friendly and adapt everyday objects for left handed people.
10% are Left Handed
Left handed people use their left hands to carry out tasks that require the use of hands. About 10% of the world's population is left handed. Despite this, most equipment and day-to-day articles are designed and manufactured for the use of right handed people - those who use their right hands to perform tasks.
The purpose of Left Handers Day is to make the majority right handers aware of the frustrations that left-handed people face while using devices designed for right-handed people. The day also encourages designers to think about the convenience of those whose left hand is their dominant hand.
Left Handers Day is also sometimes known as International Left Handers Day.
How to Celebrate?
Many organizations and public places in cities around the world create “lefty zones”, where everyday objects are adapted for use by left handed people. If you are a “lefty”, go celebrate your awesomeness at one such zone.
Take your right handed friends with you to show them how difficult it can be to use objects not made for them.
Did You Know...
...that people who are ambidextrous can easily perform tasks and use devices with both their hands? Ambidexterity is rare and only occurs in about 1% of the population.

Middle Child Day
August 12 is Middle Child Day, a day to recognize middle born children and to acknowledge their place in their families.
Many believe that the order of one’s birth can affect one’s personality. The middle child, or second born of three siblings, is said to suffer from middle child syndrome, a feeling of isolation and exclusion within the family.
Some studies have shown that in a family with multiple children, the oldest and the youngest get the most attention from their parents while those in between tend to be left by themselves, often ignored and forgotten. Middle children often have to fight for the attention of their parents and may sometimes feel like they do not belong to the family.
Independent and Creative
Being a middle child, however, isn't all that bad. Research has shown that being left alone to their own devices can actually be a positive thing for middle children. The fact they may not receive as much attention as their siblings, some studies suggest, can make them independent and creative. The lack of expectations can also help them develop their personality and life skills without any external constraints.
The unofficial holiday with unknown origins is also sometimes called National Middle Child Day and International Middle Child Day.
How to Celebrate
If you are a middle child, today is a day to treat yourself - you deserve it.
If you know of a middle child make the day special for them – they deserve it.

Son and Daughter Day
August 11 is Son and Daughter Day, a day for parents to show their love and appreciation for their children.
While the origins of this unofficial holiday are a mystery, it is clear that the anonymous creators of Son and Daughter Day wanted parents to acknowledge the joy their children bring into their lives.
The bond between parents and their sons and daughters is a very special one. It endures age and distance. No matter how old a person gets, their parents still see him or her as a child - someone to protect and to shower love on. So, take this day to tell your sons and daughters how much they mean to you and that you respect them and love them.
How to Celebrate?
If you have young kids, take them on a fun outing to let them know you care about them.
Give your kids a big hug in the morning and tell them how much you love them.
Make them a special meal and let them eat treats reserved for special days.
Don’t have kids? Shower your affection on your nieces or nephews if you have any. If you don’t, what about making it a special day for your pet? After all, they are like your kids, no?
Did You Know...
...that the concept of childhood as a phase in life where children need the protection and nurturing of their parents and other adults came about in the 16th century? Before this, children were seen as miniature and incomplete version of adults.

While we really don't want to tell you more about this awesome holiday, we are feeling lazy, you see, we will, so that you can make the most of trying to be dull for an entire day.

Book Lovers Day
August 9 is Book Lovers Day, an unofficial holiday that encourages people to pick up a book (or two) and spend the day reading.
On this day, honor all the bookworms and book lovers in your life. If you are a book lover yourself, then treat yourself to some quality reading time.
Book Lovers Day is also known as National Book Lovers Day in the United States.
Stress Reducing
Studies have shown that reading can not only be entertaining, but can also have many health benefits. Reading helps reduce stress, keeps the brain sharp, and can help you sleep better. Scientists have also found that those who read are much more likely to be empathic and understanding of others.
How to Celebrate?
Buy the book lover in your life gifts only a book lover would appreciate. Some ideas include: an e-reader, a first edition or a signed book, tea, a bookmark, or a bookshelf to accommodate their ever-growing book collection.
If you are a book lover, take the day to show your books some love. Clean your bookshelves and rearrange your books – may we recommend by color?
Get into your most comfortable clothes, curl up on your couch with a cup of hot tea, and take yourself on a great adventure with your favorite book.
What about throwing a book themed party? Have everyone wear costumes from their favorite books and serve food featured in some of your favorite books. For example, serve tea and scones for an Alice in Wonderland themed party or apple pie and ice cream if Jack Kerouac is your favorite author.
Visit your local library. If you don't have a library card, maybe it is time you get one.
Encourage the children and young adults in your life to read.

Happiness Happens Day
August 8 is Happiness Happens Day, a day to celebrate all things happy.
Created by the Secret Society of Happy People in 1999 as Admit You’re Happy Day, this unofficial holiday encourages people to be open about their happiness and to share it with others.
Unlimited Happiness
The holiday is based on the premise that happiness is unlimited and contagious and that sharing one's happiness and can bring a lot of joy in other people's lives. In addition, the unofficial holiday commemorates the day the first member joined the Secret Society of Happy People. In 2000, the Society expanded the celebration of happiness and declared August as Happiness Happens Month.
How to Celebrate?
While being happy can mean different things to different people, Happiness Happens Day encourages people to take stock of their lives and try to do and think about things that make them happy and to share this joy with others. Here are some ways to celebrate this happy day:
Do something nice for yourself - after all, happiness starts at home.
Make someone else happy by doing something nice for them. It can be something as simple as giving up your seat on the bus to someone else or a more elaborate gesture like volunteering your time and money to a charity of your choice. Studies have found that volunteering doesn't only help people bring joy in their lives but can also help them live longer.
Participate in a HappyThon - a social media campaign run by the Secret Society of Happy People that encourages people to send happy, joyful and uplifting messages to people around the world.

Lighthouse Day
August 7 is celebrated as Lighthouse Day in the United States as a way to commemorate the signing of the Act for the Establishment and support of Lighthouse, Beacons, Buoys, and Public Piers by the U.S. Congress in 1789.
In 1989, the Congress passed a resolution designating August 7 as National Lighthouse Day. The day aims to recognize the importance of lighthouses in maritime navigation and for providing ships safe harbor during bad weather.
How to Celebrate?
While lighthouses are becoming less and less important for the maritime industry, thanks to technological advances in GPS and radar systems, their historical importance cannot be understated. Use this day to read about the history of lighthouses.
If you are near the coast, why not visit one?
Contribute to preservation societies and groups working towards preserving historical lighthouses.
Did You Know...

A man boards a plane and is seated next to an Air Marshall and his ‘sniffing dog’. Soon, the plane takes off and the Marshall says, “Sniffer, search.” The dog walks along the aisle, and stops next to a woman. He then returns to his seat and puts a paw on the Marshall’s arm.
“Good boy,” says the Marshall.
“What happened?” asks the man.
“That woman is in possession of marijuana. We’ll arrest her when we land.”
Once again, Sniffer searches the aisles. He stops beside a man, then returns to his seat, and places two paws on the Marshall’s arm.
“That man is carrying cocaine,” the Marshall explains.
The dog walks up the aisle again, then races back, jumps into his seat, and poops all over it.
“What’s going on?!” demands the man.
The Marshall nervously replies, “He just found a bomb!”

Several years ago we headed to a nearby town to visit some relatives. I had a new car and was having fun driving fast on the twisty country roads. As we zoomed along, I noticed a three-legged chicken keeping pace with me. I slowed to get a better look at the speedster when it turned and went down a dirt road. I stopped, turned around and followed it.
After a short ride, we came upon a house with an older couple sitting on the porch and dozens of three-legged chickens in the yard. I asked them, “Are these your chickens? They’re the fastest I’ve ever seen.”
The old man said, “Yep.”
So I asked him where they came from, and he replied,
“When the kids were younger, they always fought over the chicken legs, so we decided to breed a three-legged chicken.”
I nodded and said, “Well, they are fast, but what do they taste like?”
He admitted, “Not rightly sure; we never could catch one.”

Work Like a Dog Day
August 5 is Work Like a Dog Day, a day to work hard and to reward people who work day and night and are very productive.
The unofficial holiday celebrates the English language phrase, working like a dog, meaning to work very hard. It is believed that the idiom comes from the hard work that working dogs - herd dogs, hunting dogs, rescue, and service dogs - put in during the day.
How to Celebrate?
Work hard. Put in extra hours at work, and who knows, you may be able to get in your boss’s good books.
Do you know someone who is a workaholic? Spend the day honoring the hard work they do and celebrate their contribution to the workplace and society by doing something nice for them.
Or, since most pet dogs don’t work much and prefer spending time lazing around, you could be a contrarian and celebrate Work Like a Dog Day by not doing any work at all!
Did You Know...

Single Working Women's Day
August 4 is Single Working Women's Day, a day reserved to recognize the important role that single working women play in our communities and societies.
The unofficial holiday was created by Barbara Payne who realized that despite the important economic and social contributions of single working women, there were no holidays that celebrated their achievements, creativity, and courage. And thus, Single Working Women's Day (SWWD) was founded in 2006. SWWD falls with Single Working Women's Week, a whole week devoted to celebrating happily single women who are gainfully employed.
No Longer a Stigma...
As societies around the world have progressed, the age-old stigma associated with single and/ or working women is slowly but surely disappearing. Today, women do not have to be married and stay-at-home to prove their worth. Successful and accomplished single women can be found in every walk of life and they contribute to their workplaces and communities on par with their peers who are married or in relationships.
...But Still Many Challenges
Despite this, there are many challenges that single working women still face in the workplace and in society. SWWD raises awareness about these issues and encourages people to find equitable solutions. The day also attempts to eliminate singlism - the stereotyping and discrimination of single people. It acknowledges that singlehood does not preclude happiness and satisfaction with life and that some people prefer going through life solo than with a partner.
How to Celebrate?
Honor all the single, working women in your life. Let them know that you admire them, respect their decisions and are inspired by what they do.
In many parts of the world, being a single woman is still considered to be a shameful thing. Volunteer your time and money to organizations that work towards helping single, working women stand on their feet and be self-sufficient in these countries.
Did You Know...
...that studies have shown that single people are much more social than married people? People with spouses and partners tend to spend less time with friends and more time with their families.

Sisters' Day
The first Sunday of August every year is celebrated around the world as Sisters’ Day.
The unofficial holiday honors the strong bond that people share with their sister(s). Sometimes called National Sisters' Day in the United States, the holiday encourages people to celebrate the special relationship between them and their sister(s).
This is a day to acknowledge the joy and love that your sister brings into your life and to make sure that she knows that you cherish all that she does for you.
Describes Many Different Relationships
While sister is usually used to refer to a female sibling, the term can be used for a variety of relationships. In many cultures, the term is used to address a female nurse, a woman who is in religious service, like a nun, or any other unrelated woman who shares a person's religion. Members of a sorority - a female social organization on college campuses - also call each other sisters.
How to Celebrate?
If you live far from your sister, call them or send them a card telling them how much you love them and appreciate them.
If you live close to them, visit them or take them out for a nice meal and treat them to their favorite dessert.
Don't have a sister who you share genes with? What about celebrating your female friends who have provided you the love and support that only a sister can?
Did You Know...
...that a similar holiday, Rakshabandhan or Rakhi is celebrated by those who follow the Hindu religion around the same time as Sisters' Day? Celebrated every year on a full Moon day, the holiday honors the sacred bond between brothers and sisters.

Watermelon Day
August 3 is Watermelon Day, an annual holiday that celebrates everyone's favorite summer fruit.
Made of almost 92% water, the fruit is full of Vitamins A, C, and antioxidants. So what are you waiting for? Go get yourself a few slices of watermelon to celebrate this delicious holiday.
Watermelon is an ancient food that is believed to have originated in tropical Africa. Historians have found evidence of watermelon cultivation as far back as 4000 years ago. Today, many varieties of the fruit are grown in warm parts of the world.
A Superfood
Because of its high water content, watermelon is a good thirst quencher. In fact, in the Kalahari desert, where they are called tsamma, watermelons are one of the main sources of water during the dry, hot season. In the past, people crossed the desert only during a good tsamma season.
Some studies have shown that the antioxidants in watermelon - carotenoid and lycopene - can reduce the risk of some types of cancer.
All parts of the fruit are edible - its flesh can be eaten as is, cooked or juiced. In many parts of the world, the rind or the thick green outer covering of the fruit is stewed, fried or pickled. In some parts of in the China, watermelon seeds are dried and roasted and enjoyed like nuts.
How to Celebrate
Celebrate the holiday by having watermelon for all your meals. Have a big glass of watermelon juice for breakfast; make a lovely watermelon, feta cheese, and mint salad for lunch; and for dinner, make watermelon salsa to go with your fish. And finally, make some refreshing watermelon sorbet to end the day on a high note.
Of course, have slices of the fruit as a snack all through the day.
Have a garden? Why not spend the day finding out how you can plant a watermelon plant in your yard. If you do it today, you'll not have to make a grocery store run to get watermelons for Watermelon Day next year. All you'll need to do is take a walk in your garden!
Did You Know…
…that watermelon is the official vegetable of the state of Oklahoma in the United States? There is some debate between the botanical and gardening community as to whether to classify watermelon as a vegetable or a fruit. Botanists all agree that watermelons are a fruit, while gardeners usually tend to believe that it is a vegetable given that it is closely related to the squash, gourd, and cucumber families.

One night while I was cat-sitting my daughter’s indoor feline, it escaped outside. When it failed to return the following morning, I found the beast clinging to a branch about 30 feet up in a spindly tree. Unable to lure it down, I called the fire department.
“We don’t do that anymore,” the woman dispatcher said. When I persisted, she was polite but firm.
“The cat will come down when it gets hungry enough.”
“How do you know that?” I asked.
“Have you ever seen a cat skeleton in a tree?” she said.
Two hours later the cat was back, looking for breakfast.

Ice Cream Sandwich Day
What is better than a scoop of ice cream on a hot (or cold or rainy or snowy) day? A scoop of ice cream sandwiched between two layers of cookies or cake. In other words, an ice cream sandwich!
Celebrated every year on August 2, the unofficial holiday is also known as National Ice Cream Sandwich Day in the US.
Many countries around the world have their own version of the ice cream sandwich. In Iran for example, rose or pistachio flavored ice cream is sandwiched between two thin wafers, while in Vietnam, street vendors sell ice cream stuffed between two layers of bread.
How to Celebrate?
Visit your local ice cream shop and treat yourself to an ice cream sandwich.
Make your own ice cream sandwiches and share with your family and friends. All you need is some wafers, cookies or biscuits and some ice cream.
Experiment with different kinds of ice cream flavors and outside layers of the sandwich. What about making a chipwich, for example? It is an ice cream sandwich made of ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies.

International Beer Day
The first Friday of August every year is International Beer Day. The unofficial holiday celebrates the art and science of brewing beer and encourages people to try out new flavors of beers.
International Beer Day was created in 2007 by Jesse Avshalomov, Evan Hamilton, Aaron Araki, and Richard Hernandez, in San Francisco, United States as a way to bring friends and strangers together over pints of beer. Between 2007 and 2012, the holiday was celebrated on August 5, but due to popular demand that the day be held on a Friday, the organizers changed the date to the first Friday of August.
Multicultural Drink
Beer is an alcoholic beverage made by fermenting sugars found in cereal grains such as wheat or barley. Many beers around the world are brewed with hops, herbs, or fruits that add flavor to the drink.
Thought to be the world's oldest beverage still consumed today, beer has been drunk by almost all cultures around the world throughout human history. Today, beer is the third most consumed beverage in the world only after water and tea.
How to Celebrate?
If you brew your own beer, share your brews with friends and family and get their feedback.
Spend your evening at a bar trying out new types of beer.
Take a brewery tour and spend time learning the science behind beer making.

Either way, take this day to tell the special women in your life that they mean a lot to you, and that you love, honor, and respect them.
The term girlfriend first came into use in 1863 as a way to describe a woman's female friend in youth. It was not until the 1920s when the word started being used as a way to describe a person's female romantic partner.
How to Celebrate?
While we think that every day of the year should be your girlfriend's day, Girlfriend's Day is a good excuse to do something extra special for that extraordinary woman in your life. Here are some ways you can celebrate this day:
Do something special for your partner to show them how much you care and love them. Maybe surprise your partner with a gift and dinner? Or take them out to see their favorite band perform or arrange for a romantic lunch picnic in the park.
Don’t have a partner? Why not celebrate your girlfriends with a girls night out or a girls only party.
Watch Girlfriends, an American sitcom that follows the lives of four friends.

SCENE: My teenage daughter and me in the car.
Lauren: Dad, do you know what the most commonly used letter in a girl’s name is?
Me: Hmm, is it a consonant or a vowel? (Silence.) Please tell me you know what consonants and vowels are.
Lauren: You’re no fun, Dad. Forget it.
Me: What is a vowel?
Lauren: OK, OK. A vowel is … ahh … eh … well, oh … uh …
Me: Close enough.

For 98 percent of the students at the school where my wife teaches, English is a second language. But that didn't stop them from giving her Christmas cards.
Still, their enthusiasm for the occasion sometimes exceeded their grasp of English. Among the many cards that flooded her desk were:
"Happy Birthday, Grandma,"
"Get Well Soon," and
"Congratulations on Passing Your Driving Test!"

National Cheesecake Day
July 30 is National Cheesecake Day, a day to treat yourself with a slice (or two) of this decadent dessert made of cream cheese, eggs, sugar, and a graham cracker crust.
Believed to have originated in ancient Greece, cheesecakes, whether baked or chilled, have become a restaurant and bakery staple around the world. There are many different regional variations of the cake. For example, the Germans use Quark and a freshly made pastry as the base for their version of the cake. In Brazil, on the other hand, cheesecake is served with a thin layer of guava jelly or marmalade.
How to Celebrate?
With a big slice of cheesecake of course! Add some fruits to it, and you can claim that it is healthy!
Bake a cheesecake at home and add new twists to the traditional recipe. Here are some ideas: replace the graham cracker crust by chocolate cookie crust, add bacon to the crust for a salty and smoky flavor, or replace the cream cheese with ricotta or goat cheese.
Make a savory version of the cake for dinner and a sweet version for dessert.
In honor of National Cheesecake Day, many restaurants and bakeries have cheesecake specials on their menus. Take your family and friends out to try out one of these specials.

"Okay," the woman confirmed. Then she added, "Just be advised you may have to wait 15 minutes for your table."

My flight was delayed in Houston. Since the gate was needed for another flight, our aircraft was backed away from the terminal, and we were directed to a new gate. We all found the new gate, only to discover a third gate had been designated for our plane.
Finally, everyone got on board the right plane, and the flight attendant announced: "We apologize for the gate change. This flight is going to Washington, D.C. If your destination is not Washington, D.C., you should deplane at this time."
A moment later a red-faced pilot emerged from the cockpit, carrying his bags. "Sorry," he said, "wrong plane."

Lasagna Day
Who doesn’t love lasagna – the versatile and delicious dish made of layers of pasta or noodles, sauce, vegetables, and meat? Celebrate it on July 29, Lasagna Day.
The unofficial holiday of unknown origins is also known as National Lasagna Day in the United States.
The modern day versions of lasagna - a one-pot dish made with layers of pasta, sauce, and cheese and then baked in an oven - originated in Naples, Italy.
Many Theories About Origins
Many theories exist on how lasagna became one of the traditional dishes of Italy. According to one theory, lasagna came to Italy by way of Greece. The word lasgna is close to the Greek work lasana, which means a trivet for a pot. Another theory suggests that the dish owes its origins to an English dish called Loseyn.
Wherever lasagna originated, however, it is clear that the addition of tomato sauce to the dish did not occur until the late 1500s. It was only after Christopher Columbus reached America in 1492, that tomatoes reached Europe.
How to Celebrate?
Take out your favorite lasagna recipe and make the dish for all your meals. What about an egg and bacon lasagna for breakfast, an eggplant lasagna for lunch, and a classic lasagna for dinner? Make a dessert lasagna to end a perfect Lasagna Day. And don't forget to share - your family and friends will love you forever!
We all love lasagna, but do you know who loves lasagna the most? Garfield - the comic cat known for his hatred for Mondays and diets and his love for food. Read Garfield comics and watch the Garfield television series to celebrate this awesome food holiday.
Did You Know...
...that lasagna is the singular for lasagne, a wide flat pasta? In recent years the terms are used both to refer to the pasta and the dish made with the pasta.

In San Diego to work with military linguists, my colleague and I checked into a hotel and ordered a 5 a.m. wake-up call. The next morning, the phone didn’t ring until 5:30.
“You were supposed to call us at 5 a.m.!” I admonished the desk clerk on the other end of the line. “What if I had to close a million-dollar contract this morning? Your oversight would have cost me the deal!”
“Sir,” he said calmly, “if you had to close that type of deal, I doubt you’d be staying in this type of hotel.”

Milk Chocolate Day
July 28 is Milk Chocolate Day, everyone's favorite type of chocolate.
Made of cocoa solids - cocoa paste and cocoa butter - mixed with dry or condensed milk and sugar, milk chocolate is one of the most common types of chocolates available around the world. The other types of chocolates include dark chocolate and white chocolate.
Native to The Americas
Chocolate is an edible treat made from the extracts of the cocoa (cacao) bean found in the cocoa pod. Native to the Americas, each pod on a cacao tree has up to 30 to 50 seeds that are fermented, dried, and roasted to make cocoa solids. Chocolatiers then mix the cocoa paste, also known as chocolate liquor, and the cocoa butter with milk and sugar to make milk chocolate.
Types of Chocolate
Dark chocolate is usually made with little or no milk and has less sugar than milk chocolate. White chocolate on the other hand only has sugar, milk and cocoa butter.
It is believed that milk chocolate was first created as a drink in the mid-19th century in Germany. The first milk chocolate in the form of a bar that we all recognize today was created by Swiss chocolatier Daniel Peter in collaboration with Henri Nestlé, the founder of the chocolate company Nestlé.
How to Celebrate?
Here are some ways you can celebrate this sweet holiday:
Treat yourself to a bar (or two) of milk chocolate.
What about baking a batch of milk chocolate cookies or a vanilla cake with milk chocolate ganache icing at home? Share with family and friends.
Add milk chocolate to all your meals. Have milk chocolate chip pancakes with milk chocolate syrup for breakfast. Have a milk chocolate shake for a snack and milk chocolate bars for dessert after lunch and dinner.
