We sat in the dingy, but well-appointed library. There were so many books that I couldn’t help but wonder if it was possible to get through them all in one lifetime. I’d bet Wren could get through them, but I wasn’t sure I’d ever really seen him read for fun. My hastily drawn picture of Anders’ war map sat among the correspondence between him and Lex. The church was much bigger than I originally anticipated. We’d been there for a few days now and the building’s sheer size made it easy to avoid Loren. I didn’t regret bringing Rah along, but gods’ the man was insufferable. If he kept it up, I had no doubt that either Talon or Wren would go after him. Things were…tense and strange. Loren and Rah remained separate from the group, walking a fair distance behind us. They were talking and I was curious about what. Amaris walked next to me. Talon and Eon were far in the front. Talon was laughing at whatever my brother said. I smiled and then let it drop as I got lost in my head again. That seemed to be happening pretty frequently. Like yesterday, there was a creeping sense that I was missing something. Something important. I tried to shake it off.

I was sandwiched between Amaris and Talon. Light was filtering in through the canvas and I groaned softly. Talon was behind me, and Amaris’ was tucked into my chest. The room was freezing. I suppose that was what happened when your window was broken and open to the elements. I refused to open my eyes, rolling instead into the warmth that had been at my back. I felt the blanket slide up and cover my shoulders and I hummed gratefully. My cheek rubbed against warm skin, and I heard a soft chuckle. I lowered my arms and panted as I looked around. A black curve extended over the four on the ground. I winced at the small bits of glass stuck into my forearms. Wren and Eon seemed to be in the same boat as me and my brother was glaring at the window. Wren snarled low and vaulted over the floor and our friends. His claws gripped the windowsill and he glared into the night. For some reason, losing the timid and shy Wren was a relief. Talon’s shield dropped and he hauled Hanja into his arms.
