Yes, everything's pretty much up in the air. -
It all looks a little dicey, for sure.

@MartyYes, one bullet would do it. Jude's a nasty piece of work. He's spent too much time alone. He needs a lot of loving attention paid to him, and he's not likely to get it. -

@MartyGood question! -
@Marty "And it is likely to be an interesting dinner." Yes! Everybody knows something but nobody knows everything and they're all in for a real surprise.

As the bard wrote, "truth will out."

@MartyYes, poor Sol has now exposed himself, but he had no choice.

@Summerabbacat and @Marty - I've always been fascinated by the collective noun for a bunch of crows, a 'murder,' and given that many crows are killed in this chapter, I couldn't resist the pun in its title.

The Big Sadness and The Porn Room

@MartyYes, Jude and River may have some surprises in store. -

@Marty Yes, the problem of obligate carnivores is resolved to some extent in later chapters. For me, where the difficulty arises is when people extrapolate that to humans. We are not obligate carnivores . We can choose what we eat. The choices we make have direct effects for good or ill on our planet.

Zhiv, David, and River stood looking out over the valley. As the sun rose and the shadows retreated, they saw that high winds had blown down many trees. They lay helter-skelter on the mountain slopes. Stretches of floodwater blurred the patchwork of fields and pastures in the valley. Parts of the winding road were invisible or seemed to be missing. There were no moving vehicles. “Many animals are in trouble down there,” said Zhiv, “I’ve got to go and try to help.” David put his hand on

Zhiv stood in the moonlight outside the entrance to his cave. At his side, the gray horse nosed his arm and shoulder. They looked down to the valley, shrouded in darkness except when lit by sudden flares of lightning within clouds gathering behind the mountains. The prevailing emotion in the mara was worry; something bad was coming. Already, the cave had become a haven where many of the forest-dwellers sought shelter. Zhiv narrowed his mara vision and sensed David and Whem moving towards hi

@scrubber6620An interesting bunch of speculations! -
As soon as Melissa got home, she transferred the video from both cameras onto her computer. She looked at all the clips again and cried a half-dozen times. Then she encrypted it, uploaded it to cloud storage, and sent a link to Hector. When that was complete, she began to edit the raw video to portray the essence of Zhiv’s life in the forest and the words he had spoken. As she constructed the video, she realized that what Zhiv said was important, but what was more important was Zhiv, himsel

River waited at the highway junction in darkness. David appeared out of the night. They hugged and rode toward the mountain without conversation. When they had climbed the old logging road, David said, “Let’s dump our bikes in the forest, then come back out to the road. I said we’d meet Hector and Melissa here. Then we can guide them the rest of the way.” They sat on a stump by the roadside. David looked at River. In the faint, pre-dawn twilight, he could see the distress on River's fa

Hector and Melissa met over lunch at the health food store where she worked. On her tablet, she opened up samples of the video she had shot with the new camera equipment. “I love the gimbal. You can walk around with the camera, and it makes everything smooth.” “Yeah. This footage looks terrific. I’ve been thinking — for the next video we should get a drone and have some shots zooming down from above.” Hector opened his briefcase and brought out a few sheets of paper. “You want to look at th

David felt River stir in his arms. He leaned back to look at him. “You okay?” “Yeah, that was fantastic.” They disengaged themselves and sat up, side by side on the bed. River laughed. “Hey, look. I don’t have a hard-on!” “Is that a good thing?” “For me, yes, especially when I’m around you.” Both boys eyed River’s lap. He became erect instantly. “I shouldn’t have talked about it.” “Yeah.” David pointed to his own stiffening penis. “It’s catching. Aren’t penises

David saw the truck camper as he came around a curve on the logging road. It was sunrise, but it was already so hot that drops of perspiration were running down his forehead. Hector was sitting on the fold-down steps that led into the camper. “Hi David.” “Hi Hector.” “I thought we might have a little talk.” David looked at him but didn’t say anything. “David, I want to help you. I don’t know what you’re doing, but I just want to offer help, any kind of help you need.”

When David was with Zhiv, his process of floating up into the mara had become routine. After closing his eyes, he would lock onto the sensations where he and Zhiv were touching. Then his mind would lift to another level as they opened up to the mara. At first, it was an empty black void. Then he would start to see images, the images of other creatures nearby. In his bedroom with River, David opened his mind and clasped River’s hand. He tried to see River and to let River see him. It was lik
