Chapter 2 - New Friends
Adam Andrews Johnson posted new chapter in The Nextworld Invasion and the Death of Magic
The free peoples of Earth were made up of three very unique races. Along with the green-skinned Urcai, there were the Noktar and the Rothians, and the inter-species culture they developed was unified with nature. The Noktar and the Rothians were both diminutive races, with individuals growing no taller than four feet, but despite their similarity in height, the two races could not have been more different. The Noktar tended to be stocky, muscular, and very hairy. They matured much more slo -

Chapter 1 - The Humans
Adam Andrews Johnson posted new chapter in The Nextworld Invasion and the Death of Magic
It was a day like any other, except that it was the beginning of the end. The Humans were invading. Two men were in the forest. Their names were Tigath and Othri, and they were in love. They were part of a green-skinned race of people called the Urcai whose hair and eyes came in every color of the rainbow. Othri’s were orange, and Tigath’s were purple. It was still early in the morning as they made their way up to a sunny rise in the land that overlooked their home city of Vuliburge.- 6 comments

Mayhem Fantasy! The Nextworld Invasion and the Death of Magic involves the gathering of a team of people from three unique races, who need to come together and try to find a way of stopping an invasion... by the Humans! This is a story about people. There is action every step of the way that helps bring the individuals closer, and strange wonders surprise even the most seasoned among them. How far will they be willing to go? Where will their decisions take them? And what will be left of them when they're done?

The Mechanic grabbed Mercury and Periwinkle by their wrists. “Hey! Are you two okay? You each went rigid for a second, like you were having a fit or something.” The two clowns realized they were back inside R’Kathlug, but the light from the dragon’s cerebral ganglia was no longer blinking, and its words were not in the clown’s heads. Mercury focused on Periwinkle. “Norjia only had it half-right. It’s both of us. The prophecy we just heard is about both of us together.” “What did

Mercury and Periwinkle’s spirits appeared, invisible and incorporeal. They both inherently knew where and when they were. It was the day of the soft opening for Domino’s bar, Unholy Mead, and that was night He was in the basement of his new establishment, and Mercury and Periwinkle were watching him. On one of the shelves that was not loaded with bottles of mead, there was a toolbox, a flashlight, and plans to dig a sub-basement. Domino was using a large shovel to dig a hole in one co

The Mechanic and Periwinkle rushed to Norjia and fell to their knees, but Mercury stood where she was. Her hand-lamp’s beam was on Norjia, who was bleeding from multiple wounds, but she was grinning. “That was a good fight,” she managed, but she coughed and winced. “Don’t speak, my love,” the Mechanic whispered. “Oh, no,” Periwinkle breathed as he looked over her. Norjia chuckled. “It’s not as bad as it looks.” It looked worse, but no one said anything. Norjia f

Norjia leaned against the wall of the cavern and doused her hand-lamp. She took a single deep inhale, closed her eyes, and slowly released the breath. She felt her heart rate steady and slow. She listened to the running footfalls of the approaching guards, and she remained motionless for the brief instant until they arrived. There was more than one of them. The first guardsman rushed past her, as did the second, but Norjia swung the Planet Smasher low through the air toward the third man’s

The inside of the small building was bright. There was a skylight in the ceiling that illuminated the top of the stairs, and a stool in one corner, but that was all that was in room. The space was restricted enough that the three women needed to descend a few steps to give Periwinkle room to stand. He was at the top with Mercury in front of him, the Mechanic several steps lower, and Norjia looking up from where the stairs began to grow darker. Her hand-lamp was already shining its beam deeper.

Mercury and Periwinkle had lugged barrels of ale into the tavern. They had made beds and cleaned dishes. They swept, mopped, polished windows, removed ashes from multiple fireplaces, dusted furniture, rolled silverware in napkins, and when the pub got busy in the evening, the clowns spent the time washing more dishes. When Norjia and the Mechanic returned, Mercury and Periwinkle were exhausted, but they were laughing. Large bowls of stew were in front of them, and they each had goblets of

It was midday when the quartet entered the glee district. Norjia was leading the way, walking with a brand-new cane she purchased in the shop Periwinkle had spotted. The group had popped back over to the store after their coffees. Periwinkle encouraged Noria to pick a cane with a wolf’s head for a handle. Mercury recommended one with a skull that had crystals in its eyes. The Mechanic’s preference was intricately carved of brass with an ergonomically shaped grip.

Mercury was alarmed by Periwinkle’s admission. She felt those same fears in her as well, but she was trying to keep them bottled-up within her heart. Killing a dragon was an absurd idea; Mercury knew it was, but hearing Eona confirm that it was possible to get into the volcano to see R’Kathlug had made everything about the clowns’ rebellious mission feel much more real. Knowing the dragon was in the capital brought with it an ominous dread that neither Mercury nor Periwinkle had expected.

Nothing was left of Morlington but cinders and ash. Like the bones of a huge, blackened skeleton, the charred remains of beams that were once part of buildings protruded up toward the sky. Much of it still smoked and smoldered. The area was deathly quiet. “Nobody told us the whole town burned down,” Mercury stated weakly. Some of the surrounding forest had burned as well, but all the fires seemed to be extinguished. “M-maybe Violatia already made it back to the capital,” Mercury

“We need to find an inn for the night,” Norjia stated. “The King’s Head?” the Mechanic suggested. “The King’s Head?” Periwinkle repeated. Norjia nodded. “There are taverns called the King’s Head in most of the towns surrounding the capital. It’s a fairly standard name here.” The street that led to the King’s Head was steep, climbing the volcano’s slope up to one of the main Armonia City town squares. The wives informed the clowns that there were city squares set up on the f

Mercury and Periwinkle followed Norjia and the Mechanic through the dark streets of Urliov Township. “Do you know if there’s a hospital or medical station in this village?” Periwinkle asked. “Maybe we can get proper crutches and fresh medicine for you, Norjia.” “Oh, that’s a great idea,” the Mechanic replied. “There’s one on the southern edge of Urliov,” Norjia stated, and she pointed ahead. “If we turn left on that street, it should bring us close to the med center. Good thinki

Norjia awoke and sat bolt upright, but doing so wrenched her injured leg, and she let out a wail. She gritted her teeth and gingerly brought her fingertips to the bandage around her thigh. “I’ve got you,” the Mechanic said beside her. Norjia turned to her wife. “My leg,” she managed to groan. “I know,” the Mechanic replied, and she brought a hand to her wife’s shoulder. “I treated it while you were unconscious, but we’re going to need to try and make it to a community area as so

Mercury turned away from the hotel’s walking direction, and she muttered one more, “What the fuck?” She was flummoxed by the incomprehensible monstrosity, but she focused on her companions. They were in a bad state. Periwinkle and the Mechanic were both doing a little better than Norjia and Morwinna. The Mechanic had been drugged, and she was still feeling groggy and confused, but she was starting to come around. She was leaning against a tree and massaging her temples with her eyes closed

“What do you mean he got away?” Mercury squawked. “Where’d he go?!” Morwinna was in a fury, but he was clutching his jaw, and fresh blood was streaming from his bottom lip. “He kicked me in the face and slipped into a secret exit in this panel of the wall, and it sealed behind him!” Mercury looked at the empty doorway that led out of the room. “Periwinkle,” she breathed. She rushed to help Norjia out of the cuff around the ankle of her uninjured leg, and Mercury did her best to be car

“Dizriolith!” Norjia bellowed, and she brought her hands to the wall in desperation. She pounded on it with all her might, but it was immovable. “What the fuck is this?!” Mercury squawked. Periwinkle was examining where the corner should have been, and he informed the other two, “There’s a seam here! This wall might be retractable.” Norjia beat against the wall again. “Dizriolith, can you hear me?!” she shouted, but there was no response from the Mechanic. “What the fuck is

Vorgos was energetic, and he was dapper, with a curled handlebar mustache and styled-up hair. The structures behind him were not collapsible camping tents, and instead, they were more like fabric cabins. “You’re some of the first folk to take the King’s Road from the west!” he declared. “I haven’t had many guests yet.” Norjia pulled on the reigns, and Candi came to a stop. “What did it take you,” Vorgos asked, “five or six days to get here from the western villages?” “Fou

Periwinkle looked from Mercury to the Mechanic and asked, “How did people here start controlling genetics?” “There’s a prophecy,” the Mechanic began, but Mercury interrupted her. “Oh, great, another prophecy.” “Another?” Periwinkle replied. Mercury rolled her eyes. “Yeah, Silverwinter told me about some old prophecy, something about a genetically pure chosen individual.” Norjia looked back over her shoulder from the front seat, where reins in hand, she was controlling Ca

The clowns spent the night at Norjia and the Mechanic’s home, and the four rose together with the sun. They enjoyed a very satisfying breakfast and packed the cart for their long trip, but before leaving on the journey, Norjia and the Mechanic brought Mercury and Periwinkle to see the High Regent of Mysticism. The city streets were quiet as the four of them walked along. Only a few other folks were out and about, getting coffees or heading to work. “The regent lives right around this

Glimdrim and Krizibop had stayed with the group for a meal, but afterward, the two woodland jesters hugged and kissed their new friends, and they headed off to find the rest of their troupe. Silverwinter had said her goodbyes and embraced everyone, and she returned to her tavern as Tulip and Gorji led Mercury and Periwinkle to the Grunnel. “Oh, I get it,” Mercury declared when they arrived. “It’s a subway!” The two clowns turned to each other. “You were right; it’s a train.” Unlike the

Silverwinter returned to Mercury while she and Tulip were still talking. “Are you two getting along?” “Tulip was just telling me about the rebel called the Mechanic,” Mercury replied. Silverwinter looked impressed. “You’re really serious about fighting? I’ve known the Mechanic for years. She’s one tough mama.” “Sounds like she is,” Mercury said, and she launched into a story. “It’s wrong for people to hoard power. Those who can stand up for the downtrodden need to do just that! I
