  1. Have to confess, it's not an instrument I have written for! Alas
  2. Mother is called Margaret. Not sure when we find out.
  3. When Neil dropped me off at Mother’s, I had had twinge of anxiety. Good manners had meant that I had suggested he come in for a drink. Thankfully he wanted to be off home. I had no idea whether Mother would really welcome a visit from Neil, but I sure as hell knew that she would reprove me if I did not offer. Good manners were important. "You're prompt, love. I wasn’t sure whether you’d make it. You got a lift then?" Mother was in the living room, and it sounded as if there was a
  4. Now we have come to the end of Louis and Charlie's journey, it's nice to see that we made No. 3 in this month's Mystery Chart! Top 10 Most Read Mystery in the last month are: Circumnavigation by C James A Change of Worlds by Josh Aterovis The Art of Living by Robert Hugill Gabriel's Gambit: Contract Terminated by Jason Rimbaud Thank you to all our readers.
  5. I have realised that characters do reappear in different guises, so that Alex & Neil has an uncle character akin to the Louis' uncle, only Alex's is alive and kicking.
  6. Venetia does not make an appearance I am afraid. There is no real 'bitch' character in the story!
  7. Having crashed and burned after early success as a composer, Alex has managed to rebuild his career and his life. Carpenter Neil is between girlfriends, and his knowledge of music is limited. Yet despite their differences the two come together, and each spurs the other on to explore life further and to take risks. Add in a pair of mothers who are friends and Neil’s fragile younger brother—as well as a manipulative rich uncle and some lively friends—and you have a dynamic mix.
  8. Mother had met Anne at evening classes, where they were both teaching. After Father had died, Mother stopped teaching full time and replaced this with a mixture of supply teaching and evening classes. She had also taken a course in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and something seemed to click. She eventually gave up drumming English literature into recalcitrant British teenagers and concentrated on teaching English to those who wanted or needed to learn the language. And being Mother
  9. Brussels bites Travel by Eurostar was definitely not conducive to sketching the countryside. I had had the naive idea that I could spend the journey drawing what I could see. A mad blur, that’s what! When I had complained, Charlie had laughed and pointed out the company’s proud boasts of the train’s maximum speed and journey time. The Museum was covering my train ticket on the Eurostar for my visit to Brussels, so I had managed to convince Charlie to let me splurge a little and trea
  10. I never say never, but my mind has not got there yet...
  11. Yes, the blog is basically news and reviews of classical music and opera. Essential reading!!!!
  12. Drinks party “I’m clearing Aunt’s room at the weekend.” “Her bedroom? That’s fantastic, isn’t it?” I looked at Ian and he did seem relaxed about the idea. “Is there much stuff?” “Well, I got rid of her clothes and that. There’s still all her personal things.” “Will you keep some?” “Yeah. Bits and pieces, like you said. I’m taking it slow.” He gave a small smile. “It’s no good having boxes of stuff, though.” “I found that when I moved here. There was all sort
  13. In fact, I do have more in the pipeline! At the moment it's new stories, with no concrete plans to revisit old favourites. Yet...
  14. Thanks. The role of Joss and PJ did rather grow somewhat as the story progressed because I too grew rather fond of them...
  15. Two men in a taxi, giggling “Are we asking PJ and Joss to the drinks in the studio?” Charlie was restless. We were off to dinner with Joss and PJ, and our cab was late. I’d had a text updating me. “Of course. It depends on Joss’s work though, don’t forget.” “Even if it’s a yes, it might turn into a no.” “Precisely. Though PJ is his own man. He might come on his own.” “Fair enough.” “Have you sorted out the van?” “To move the stuff from the studio? Ye
  16. Thanks to everyone for doing the actual reading!
  17. Naked Tom and plans I wasn’t sure where the time had gone, but it was well into September already and the light was already changing. The scaffolding had gone as quickly as it had appeared. The big barn had a new roof, or rather a roof rejuvenated. I know: it wasn’t a barn at all. But I’d been used to referring to them as such ever since visiting the place after Uncle Vernon acquired it, and changing the name to ‘cow byres’ or something just didn’t have the right ring to it. The roofer
  18. Getting close!
  19. Perhaps dinner “Come on JB. They had us around for a meal. We can’t ignore that.” Joss frowned. “Wasn’t planned.” “All right, it was casual. Spur of the moment. But they still entertained us. We ought to do something in return. That is only polite.” “Mmm?” A distinctly grumbly rumble. PJ’s eyes twinkled. “You might be lucky: they might refuse.” “Not much chance of that.” “Then go with it. If the weather’s nice, we can be outside, so we don’t need to d
  20. Your idea of the ages is about right, which is great!
  21. Apologies if the mystery element seems to have gone Awol. I wanted a reasonable amount of time to pass in Thrapston before the artefact was finally discovered in its hiding place, and I found I had all sorts of other threads to tie up too.
  22. Drawing Charlie “Can I see what you’ve done so far?” “They’re only quick sketches, nothing serious.” The project to draw Charlie had gradually gathered momentum. In stray moments when we were sitting together and the light was right, I had been practising sketching him, trying to capture a likeness. We were now going to have a full sitting, whatever ‘full’ meant. Finally, one Saturday morning we were trying things out in his studio. Which meant that we could lock the door
  23. Have to wait and see!
  24. Just drinks with clients My eyes probably opened to their widest. “You want to invite the scary policeman and his boyfriend for drinks. Here, at the house?” Charlie laughed. “Come on! Joss Burgess isn’t scary. At least, not in non-police mode. A bit gruff, perhaps.” “With a tendency to talk in grunts and rumbles.” “But not scary. Look, PJ is a client.” “And…?” “My first major lacquer commission. Make a bit of a fuss, have drinks and that. They seemed—I don’
