A villa in the South of France is not bad! It is a region I know well... and all through my boyhood and adolescence I was familiar with many gay couples who lived there... the lucky ones who had been able to escape from postwar England. And yes, there was a decorated war hero among them... and another nice, respectable gentleman who had spent a year in prison for gross indecency. Your story brilliantly recaptures that horrid era.

A beautiful short story. Sad, though, because something tells me that Hollis and Marcus are not going to be particularly happy... and honestly: the niece changed her name TO Muffy Dahling?! How perfectly foul.
