Triptych Fascination - 1. If You Listen

Sometimes what people don’t hear is what most needs to be said. From the point of view of a gay female contemplating the differences between what straight men are able to say about women and what women are allowed to say about women, in public.

You'll hear them all say, "I want that girl".
Leaning against the bar, drink in hand,
Guy's night out meets girl's night out
and they think they've got it sorted.

You'll never hear me say, "I want that girl".
Outloud. Too nervous to speak a thought
apart from the "understanding" voices,
and I know I have a long way to go anyway.

[There are some things best left unspoken than
voiced to those who have no wish to hear]

-

You'll hear them say, "I want that girl
with her wrists curled around her drink"
then maybe she'll hear them, turn, look,
and they don't know how lucky they are.

You'll never hear me say, "I want the girl
whose concentration can be measured
by how much hair is around her fingers,"
and she wouldn't listen to me anyway.

[They don't appreciate the time she gives
that is more precious than the time itself]

-

You'll never hear them say, "I want that
girl whose smile shatters all of reality,"
because they'll never understand her and
the difference between looking and seeing.

You'll never hear her say, "I want the
girl whose fingernails linger on radiators
because she can't resist the noise." and
maybe that's the way it's meant to be.

[She'd never want the girl whose hands
have touched more books than souls]
