Monologues - 2. Coming Out

Teen comes out to his friends, and they don't have the greatest reaction. Big brother intervenes.

All of you just shut the fuck up. Look at him. Just look at him. He trusted you enough to tell you he’s gay, and what is your response? To try to make it about you. About how he didn’t trust you enough to tell you sooner. About how he should have known you wouldn’t care. About how he should have known you’d stay friends. Well, see how well that trust is turning out? He’s sitting there crying his eyes out and all you can think about is yourselves. It took me three years of dropping hints to him that I’d be okay with it before he admitted it to me, but you think you should have known sooner? Feh, fucking children. Get it through your thick skulls. It’s not about you, it’s about him. It’s about him being comfortable with himself. It’s about him not wanting to hide anymore. It’s about him being confident enough in who he is. It’s about him being ready to let the world in. It’s one hundred percent about him. The only way you factor in is because he happens to have thought of you as his friends. Tyler, he was there for you when you had that dust up with your father over soccer. Rachel, he was there for you when that guy you were dating tried to force you into sex. Tom, when those seniors were stealing your money and beating you up, who was there? Oh, that’s right. Celio was there. Now, you little bastards get the fuck out of my house right now!

I have a college friend who recently told me she's Bi, and I'm proud of her for doing work with LBGT groups in our area. However, from what she's told me about people coming out nowadays in their discussion groups, the type of me-me-me centered reactions are on the rise.

It makes me sad to know that, because with progress should come greater respect and understanding. Back in my day, as a young man coming out to my friends and family, I met with almost universal love and support -- and concern for how I was doing in the process! No one then thought about themselves, or somehow felt "cheated" by another person's information. And of course, truth be told, I lost a few friends who were openly homophobic towards me. But at least they were honest.

Thank you for posting this. I think it's important to talk about the subject and find a way back to the how things should be

Thank you for the kind words, and I’m sorry I missed this comment.

I’d heard about situations like this before too, and it boggles my mind that people are so damn self-centered in this sort of situation too.

My situation was similar to yours, nobody was an asshole about it. The world has changed in so many ways and often not for the better. People just don’t want to exercise critical thinking. We do what we can.
