Shape-Shifter (my Anthem) - 1. Shape-Shifter (my Anthem)

One stream, first small, then widening, only to narrow again

Cuts its way through familiar earth

We wash our hands here and wait for inspiration

And as we sit, a new spring emerges

Unexpected and unwanted

(Or is this the Inspiration we sought?)

We work it out – parting our souls one from another, painful journey ahead

Your judgment has begun and ended my sense of new found stability

I could have lived on the fruitless side

Marrow sapped

Yet safe and secure

But I chose to see the new river rushing

Shame on me

And the world agrees with you

For I am the rebel, the shape-shifter, bereft of decency

All this might be true, but as I sit here awhile I realize

That the river bed that has run for so long, is barren

My choice is hard; and annihilates you in an instant

So I am alone with this new, very other spring

This is the river I must embrace

What channel will hold you, water from my soul?

Where will you run and how will I travel with and within you?

I am scared in the unfamiliarity of this new course

I know not how to swim; how to float on your buoyancy

Teach me in quiet moments

That I might embrace this new life to come
