Shape-Shifter (my Anthem) - 3. First Love

You with your long hair, sitting beside me but turned away and silent

Avoiding my eye contact, you communicate that you are not interested, perhaps even troubled, with what I have to share.

Fall leaves burn outside; some farmer clearing his field.

As I lean toward you, I catch the fragrance of the lotion that you put on this morning – flowery, but not too sweet; clean and fresh.

My mouth is dry and uncomfortable now. I have no doubt that you will taste rich and satisfying.

Silence between halted speech where I explain to you my new found understanding and how I love you.

I’m out on a limb, hanging precariously; I thought you would be interested in me.

You ask for a hug, tenuous though it is. I leave unsatisfied, but wait for the new day to begin.

2011 Susan D. Nielsen

**sigh** I think I have been there too. Brought back memories from January 2009, when My eyes opened.
