Shape-Shifter (my Anthem) - 5. Mother

“So, I have something to tell you.”

“Yes?”

“I’m gay, you know.”

“I know; I have known; I wanted to forget.”

“It took more than 30 years for me to remember.”

“I know.”

Silence

‘Did you not want me to know? Did you want me to try to forget like you?”

“That would have been easier.”

“For who? You? Because it hasn’t been easier for me.”

“I know”

Silence

“So this is who I am.”

“I know.”

“No going back.”

“I know.”

Silence

“You might have said something before you died.”

“I couldn’t.”

“Why?”

“You had made a life for yourself in a heterosexual shell.”

“Well, no pearl inside, as far as I can tell.”

“I know.”

Silence

“If we had a do-over, would you.”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I’d tell you I love you any way you are. I’d tell you to figure out what makes you happy and pursue it.”

“Oh…I see. I think I am doing that now.”

“I know”

Silence
