Coast Guard hunts drug-running semi-subs

Sophisticated submarine-like boats are the latest tool drug runners are using to bring cocaine north from Colombia, U.S. officials say.

Although the vessels were once viewed as a quirky sideshow in the drug war, they are becoming faster, more seaworthy, and capable of carrying bigger loads of drugs than earlier models, according to those charged with catching them.

"They tend to be one of a kind," U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen said. "They cost up to a million dollars to produce. Sometimes they are put together in pieces and then reassembled in other locations. They're very difficult to locate."

Narco_submarine

narco submarine (also called narco sub, drug sub and Bigfoot submarine) is a type of custom-made ocean-going self-propelled semi-submersible (SPSS) vessel built by drug traffickers to smuggle drugs. They are especially known to be used by Colombian drug cartel members to export cocaine from Colombia to Mexico, which is often then transported overland to the United States.

First detected in 1993, they are popularly called submarines, though strictly speaking they are semi-submersibles since they cannot dive; most of the craft is submerged with little more than the cockpit and the exhaust gas pipes above the water. In other words, a narco sub is a surface vessel with a very low freeboard or low profile. Narco submarines are designed specifically to be nearly undetectable visually or by radar, sonar and infrared systems.

Man questioned over bodies dumped in canal

Police are continuing to search for clues in the canal using a remote-controlled submarine with a camera and have also searched Beauchamp's house.

^^^^^^^^^^^^ I wonder if Bridget is getting one at her Dock Home??

If they got hold of a real submarine, they could unload it offshore and never even have to bother entering territorial waters.

The Navy or the Coasties couldn't go after it for fear of attacking a Chinese or Russian boat operating in international waters.

One sub with a full load of coke could easily pay for itself.
