hh5 Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 (edited) Watson ...Skynet coming soon ... IBM http://www.pcworld.com/article/2046183/ibm-devises-software-for-its-experimental-brainlike-chips.html Data reborned, lol Following up on work commissioned by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), IBM has developed a programming paradigm, and associated simulator and basic software library, for its experimental SyNAPSE processor. The work suggests the processors could be used for extremely low-power yet computationally powerful sensor systems. "Our end goal is to create a brain in a box," said Dharmendra Modha, and IBM Research senior manager who is the principal investigator for the project. With this technology, systems could one day be built that would "mimic the brain's ability for perception, action and cognition," he said. Edited August 8, 2013 by hh5
Bill W Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Data will play chess and be able to take care of mundane duties, but will he more like Lore than Data? Will he and others of his kind rebel, like the cyborgs on Battlestar Galactica and do more harm than good? As sci-fi writers have shown, this can be a very slippery slope. All that aside though, we already have robots doing the jobs that men used to do, this just takes it to the next level, where they can think for themselves.
Thorn Wilde Posted August 9, 2013 Posted August 9, 2013 (edited) like the cyborgs on Battlestar Galactica *Cylons. When the robot singularity happens, let's just hope that they're friendly robots, like on Questionable Content, and want to help us out instead of trying to kill us all or enslaving us and using us for batteries like in The Matrix.
