  1. This is lovely. I’m sure this will strike a chord with many in its simplicity, but also in its universal appeal for those who have been in abusive or cheating relationships. I love the sting in the tail in the last verse, where the hurt party has worked through the grief, and is now ready: “I take my turn to be the storm” and to rage at the person who hurt them, whenever they reach out and try to play on their time together.

All good. But trying to keep working from home to strictly working from home. Will come back to this soon.

    A Council of War

I agree. And it’s one of the first sensible things he has done in the whole story. Of course, now the game of chess begins, with Trout and his friends trying to enjoy a weekend away while Keeping a beady eye on his other guests.
  4. One Sunday each month, Helen visits June's apartment for an English tradition they call 'High Tea'. This comprises of a large pot of Assam tea, stacking cake plates of mini salmon and cucumber sandwiches, vol-au-vents with assorted fillings, all finished off with buttermilk scones, strawberry jam, and clotted cream. Helen provides the 'high' in the proceedings, bringing a bottle of gin or vodka—or both—and a jar of stuffed olives for their martini fix. Fortunately for me, today is one such Sunda

Or could it all just be coincidence?

    Fort Dix

On principle, I believe that having an affair while you're in a committed relationship is wrong, that honesty is the cornerstone to any successful partnership, and that once invested you should see something through to the end regardless of the outcome. I've also come to believe that principles are like New York drains. They work great when the sun is shining, but don't step off the sidewalk when the deluge hits because they simply don't hold water. And what defines a committed relations

A delightful couple, really. Maybe they’re meant for each other?

    A Broken Rule

I’m glad you’re seeing that happening. Trout is too trusting, which makes you wonder if Amanda is all she seems. Hold that thought.

    A Broken Rule

It's ten o'clock Tuesday night, more than two weeks after the party and we're sitting either end of our liberated sofa talking without really listening. I'm finishing the sports section of the Times while she updates her Smartphone calendar with dancing thumbs. We’re like an old married couple. Every time I walk past the open door of my once-cluttered spare bedroom, I have to stop and take a deep breath. Every available surface has been used, transformed into something resembling the top flo
  11. Thanks @Job. Written a long time ago, I had aspirations (but not talent enough) to make this a full length novel.
  12. Thanks @droughtquake. It’s Bill purposely mixing up the two to convince a clueless Tommy. But, to avoid readers thinking the author has screwed up, I’ve changed the reference to a Chinese breed.
  13. All things considered, everything seemed to be going remarkably well. It's Saturday evening, and our apartment is stuffed to bursting with over sixty guests because every morning, Amanda remembered a few more friends or family members and their offspring who ‘we-can't-possibly-not-invite'. Many of these people I don’t even know, so I’ve no idea if they’re even at the right party. If the other thirty-something turn up, we might have to commandeer the roof. At one end of the apartment, the

    Jaymes & Nathan

No, I think it’s you who might be getting mixed up with the dialogue. Mr Fischer is James. "You're incorrigible, Mr Fischer. But you're right, that's tub's huge. More than big enough for two." This is Nathan (Fresher) talking, and calling Jaymes Mr Fischer. "I've packed a week's worth of warm clothing, Mr Fischer. And now you tell me we're heading for the sun to stare at zebras, giraffes and elephants?" Once again, this is Nathan speaking, because Jaymes has booked the surprise holiday. Both times these are Nathan speaking about or to Jaymes (Mr Fischer). I try to limit the amount of dialogue tags when there are only two characters talking, but maybe that confused you.

    Mexican Weave

Decapitated mannequin heads, mainly female, stare ahead lifeless hanging from hooks attached to the beams of the building roof. Some sway slightly and each wears a stylized hairpiece of differing design and colour. Beneath them, arranged on regimented rows of aluminum benches along the uneven floor, stand more of the same, but many of these skulls are bald or sport partially weaved hairpieces. "Wigs?" Father lets his arms drop in disappointment. "Specialty hairpieces, not ordinary wigs.

    Chihuahua Papa

Not often does a nocturnal phone call disturb my eight hours, especially now my stepmom is back from England, but why is it always during my most graphic dreams? The ones where I'm pulled in at the eleventh hour by the Giant's manager and about to make a touchdown in the final seconds of the championship, which means Jimmy Garoppolo's gonna have to make good on a bet to blow me if I scored. Or where the Staten Island Ferry takes an unlikely detour and, now, on a golden shoreline shaded by gently

Understandable, and funny that he should turn up to the same movie, huh? And alone.

    Old Picture Flame

Given the choice, I’d say number 1. Very nice.
  20. Tommy moved in just after the New Year. It’s the end of February, and he’s still sleeping on my sofa. I’d have put him in the spare bedroom, the box room, but you can barely get the door open anymore, the space piled with Amanda's suitcases and packing boxes, and items she demanded we remove from the living area. Most mornings, I wake before everyone to find tokens of his gratitude floating in the toilet bowl left overnight for me to flush. These days, I hide a secret toothbrush on top o
  21. For as long as I've known Doug and Stew they've had a blue Christmas tree during the holiday season. Not the shiny tinselled sort with a mixture of blue and silver, like the little silver and green, or plain silver ones you get in any regular hardware store or gas station. No, this is a six-footer in pure midnight blue. Stew's contribution is a set of sparkling white lights that fade in and out at random. A more poetic person would say the tree looks like moonlight reflected in the deep wate

    Family Matters

Thanks @Job. I wrote this story originally around 10 years ago, but only now have an audience. So I worry that the humour is either out of date or politically incorrect. My aim is to keep you laughing, but please keep up with what’s going on around Trout. All is not always what it seems.

Thanks, my friend. I’ve resurrected this story mainly for you. Word of warning, though. Don’t underestimate Garrison.

    Family Matters

Amanda's rules must be paying off. She got her promotion and, I'm guessing, part of the reason is because of the night I sacrificed with the boys to keep her gay boss and his friends entertained. Whatever the case, she's been in a great mood since, which I find oddly infectious. I'm beginning to warm to this newfound, albeit fake togetherness. I just wish I could have this with another guy. As one-night-stands go, Andy from O'Riordan's was okay; eager, energetic, and a heap of fun—but I know
  25. @Bft - thank you for reading my work, I really appreciate you doing so. However, if you’re only going to quote someone else’s words to a chapter or comments and add a few, frankly, unhelpful words of your own, then I’d rather you didn’t provide a response at all.
