  1. Chapter 8: The Christmas Formal The silence in the executive rental was broken only by the rhythmic splash of water from the vast, pristine marble bathroom. The high-stakes surveillance mission of the Christmas Formal was about to begin, and it started, absurdly, with a domestic ritual: getting dressed. Alex, freshly shaved and smelling of expensive cologne, was folding a crisp, white dress shirt on his bed. He was calm, focused, treating the event with the meticulous precision of an op

  4. Chapter Thirty-five WORLD END: T-minus 151 days, 23 hours, and 0 minutes Kingston, Ontario The black Jeep Wrangler was already moving. Andrew had no time to sit and process the devastating truth he had uncovered. He was now racing along the dark highway, heading back to Ottawa with a political time bomb in his mind. He drove with cold, lethal control, every movement of the wheel managed by sheer discipline, his injured side protesting with a constant, dull throb but he d

He is the quintessential Lion in Winter, his eye is on the future, his legacy and his decedents. Tommy is that future, and he views all the boys as his grand-kids, and by extension Will, and Peter. His relationship with Peter, or more specifically Peter's long term friendship with Becky, his daughter goes all the way back to Carter's Recourse. He's been the antagonist of one of the books already, he's been Will's boss in Breach, and now he's a family friend. It's interesting to see his evolution as well over the books.

  10. Chapter 7: The Quartermaster's Menu The front door chime—a polite, low Westminster tone—announced the evening’s final delivery. Alex, now dressed in a fresh silk robe, walked to the door. Standing on the porch was Gideon, a man whose appearance defined discreet capability. He wore a perfectly tailored charcoal suit, gloves, and a thin, expensive watch. He carried no obvious weapons, only a small, leather-bound attaché case and a large, velvet-draped trolley that looked suspiciously li

Some things need to be earned. Will has been slowly moving towards this eventual goal, from the Call-center through to Avery-Woods, into politics. I wanted his rise to feel earned, he's been lucky along the way, but also he's fought hammer tooth and tongs to this level of politics. Let's see if he can go the last mile. 4 More chapters to go.

  15. Chapter Thirty-four WORLD END: T-minus 151 days, 8 hours, 0 minutes CBC NEWS - BREAKING REPORT The low, familiar theme music of CBC News, usually measured, surged with frantic urgency. A digital chime sliced through the quiet air. The screen of the wall-mounted television, which Lisa had been monitoring, flashed the graphic: BREAKING NEWS: PRIME MINISTER REQUESTS FOR PARLIAMENT TO BE PROROGUED. Rosemary Barton, looking grim, faced the camera. "We are interrupting t

Sitting on ten chapters of this so far, so no pressure. Then I have three more book ideas, so as long as my fingers hold up, and they can wait for me to type as fast as I can, they should be satisfied.
  17. Chapter 6: The Cleaner Alex ran until the cold air burned his lungs and the adrenaline felt like battery acid in his veins. He didn't slow down until he hit the high, frozen bank of the river path, where the thick stand of cedars finally offered acoustic and visual cover. He was miles from the Independent Grocers, but the memory of the two Agridyne agents, lost in the chip bag avalanche, was still vivid. He slowed to a fast, tactical walk, shedding the improvised uniform. He folded the

    Chapter 33

I was summarizing the constitutional crisis posed by the Prime Minister's power, you are correct. But again I don't see the sovereign ever refusing this as it breaks the hands off rules. This is inherently the problem with the constitutional monarch system, the check/balance that the sovereign provides as head of state has never been exercised. It would be interesting to see what happens if it ever were. I also don't see a PM placing a GG in place who wouldn't do as they are instructed by the PM, it would be problematic to consider the fall out. Ah Constitutional Crisis are fun, aren't they?

    Chapter 33

Prorogation is the nuclear option, it's been used a couple of times in recent history in Canada to do, pretty much, this. Stephen Harper used it tactically to stave off a challenge to his leadership and it is widely considered to be an Absolute tyrannical move in a modern democracy, and an act of utter desperation. Silencing parliament in a time of crisis is, at least in my opinion, a power the Prime Minister should never have. Canada, unlike most countries in the world, has the most Direct power held by the Prime Minister. Argueably more so than even the President of the United States. The Prime Minister can appoint senators, The Governor General AND the Supreme Court. Meaning he has direct control over all of his checks and balances. It is an area that caused immense problems throughout Stephen Harper's Reign as PM. The three books of this Trilogy get into this power, it's abuses, and it's potential for tyranny. We're very lucky that, in Canada, no one has abused the full weight of that power. yet.

  23. Chapter Thirty-three WORLD END: T-minus 151 days, 23 hours, and 0 minutes 7 Rideau Gate, Ottawa, Ontario The manicured grounds of Seven Rideau Gate were a study in cold, precise formality. Lisa Sternosti guided Will down a winding, gravel path away from the North Wing, heading toward the rear lawn. The late afternoon sunlight, thin and weak, cast the perfect, lonely shadow over the Prime Minister’s newest cage. Will walked stiffly, his bruised face set in the mask of the
