  1. I He paused just at the entrance to the compound, glancing quickly back over his shoulder; he needn't have worried, he could still hear raised, panicking voices inside and no one was paying attention to him. He slipped outside. A couple minutes trekking through the forest, well away from where anyone was living, hoping he was heading in the right direction, a handful of acorns were sent flying across his path. He stopped walking, turning his head left and up, barely spotting a pair of legs dan
  2. Wow, thanks for the reviews. Glad you're enjoying it.
  3. Would it help if I promised there are no werewolves? I do know what you mean, everyone has a line; there have been more than a few stories I stopped reading because the sudden influx of fairies and dragons and vampires, etc. killed my enjoyment. I don't intend this to be too over the top, but I guess we'll have to see. Thank you for the review.
  4. He almost thought he would've been expected; an illogical thought and he knew it, but that didn't stop it from being there. He would've thought he'd arrive at the top of the hill and find the man waiting there, facing in his direction perhaps with a small smile on his face that said he had known he was coming. When you've been thinking about something for so long, trying to plan it out, talking yourself into it, probably making your family nuts with it, then surely the subject of your mental obs
  5. Thank you. I guess that is the problem with structuring things this way, people have their favorites and they don't want to wait for them to come back. I'm sure it will make everyone happy when the plot lines come together and things are blended more. I have two other chapters already written. I'll put up more over the next few days.
  6. V Xander Cain opened his eyes, once again in his bed alone. He pulled himself into a sitting position, feeling unpleasantly lightheaded, a horrible itch in his arms, like something crawling under his skin. He glanced down, seeing red splotches at random spots on his forearms. Fucking wonderful. Where is he? The blond? Uh, Strife? He climbed out of bed, following a long trail of discarded black clothing to his bedroom door, far more than what a person would be wearing at once, which he notice
  7. IV Sometimes Veil was tolerable, from the shadows, way off the beaten path, strolling through a park in the middle of the night with not a single human being in sight. It could almost be beautiful sometimes if not for that itching, clogging, suffocating feeling Strife wrapped around himself like a cloak of misery, making sure he was aware of it every second of every day lest he ever become complacent. Fat chance of that. Strife didn't like to think of how long it had been, didn't want to think
  8. Other characters. Tallen and Frost aren't the only central people; they'll be back again when this chapter ends.
  9. III The alarm played for perhaps fifteen seconds before it went sailing across the room, smashing against the far wall, batteries popping out, falling down dead and blessedly silent. His parents were probably going to be pissed, this was the fifth one this school year alone; perhaps lingering sympathies over his prolonged illness will prevent them from attempting to vocalize their frustrations, stick to mumbling quietly amongst themselves as per usual. Swallowing a mouthful of painkillers, Xan
  10. II Strife spent his first ten minutes in Veil on his knees, bent over a toilet, vomiting out seemingly everything he had ever eaten in his entire life. Not the way he would have liked to begin this little adventure, not a promising sign at all. He could sense a presence hovering nearby, watching him, reeking of anxiety, waiting until the violent dry heaving calmed again before stepping hesitantly forward. The other gatekeeper, didn't catch the kid's name and so dubbed him Mouseshit; young twit
  11. I It seemed the impossible had finally happened: Alexander Cain opened his eyes to find himself alone in an empty bed after having not gone to sleep that way. Even more impossible still, he was actually angry about it. He rolled on to his back, glaring blearily at the ceiling, cursing his shitty luck. How many times had he closed his eyes, hoping against hope that the dumb twit who followed him home that night would just take the hint and disappear; did it ever happen? Oh hell no, he'd wake up
  12. I'd met a few easily rattled, or at least willing to assume the worst in everything. I admit, this is one of the sections I always worry about, that I didn't get her character quite right, and maybe never will. Glad its interesting.
  13. Heh. The confusion will get worse, and you might want to strangle me before too much longer. There is a method to my madness though, I swear I mostly know what I'm doing here. Thanks for the review, glad to know someone's enjoying it.
  14. Dr. Allison Dyer had spent the ten free minutes before her next appointment reviewing the case file one last time. The details were familiar enough by now even if the patient himself was new; her colleague Susan had brought this one to her, wondering if there was anything she could do here because Susan herself was at a loss, and they had spent some time discussing the particulars. Allison had been by no means certain she could do anything here (frankly, she wasn't sure what to make of this at a
  15. Thank you. I had to look that story up, and yes this is going in a different direction. Don't know if it will be a less mentally scarring one, though...
  16. IV There had once been a city here, or so they said; not grand by modern standards, not compared to what could be found on the larger continents, but for its time and place it was something. Of course Elleth had never seen it, nor had her parents nor grandparents even; there was no trace of it left now, except in local legend. The compound remained, which had stood outside the city's boundaries hidden in a forest that likewise no longer existed, its tall stone walls meant to stand against a sie
  17. III There was a distinctive knock at the door: three fast, then one, then three more, one, and finally two close together. It was almost musical, and he knew it was Tallen before he even looked at the clock. He opened the door to be greeted by that warm smile. “Hey, I'm back.” He nodded his head, feeling himself automatically returning the smile. He stepped aside, gesturing with his arm for Tallen to come inside. Tallen gave him a quick look over on his way by, “You look like you're still do
  18. II He almost called out sick. It had taken forever to calm down enough to sleep after his nighttime excursion; he was still stressed, tired and stressed from being tired. He had his hand on the phone, he knew Lillian would understand, he had done this before. But some instinct, or perhaps just a hope that work would be distracting, and he thought better of it. When he walked through the door and saw Sophie sitting at a table across from a head of golden blond hair and a long dark coat, he sore
  19. I The best feature of this apartment was the floor to ceiling window that took up the entire back wall. If only it had offered a better view. He stood in front of that window, hand pressed against the glass, eyes scanning listlessly over the usual sights. The back alley behind his building; the dumpster overflowing with garbage from the bar on the first floor; the homeless man sleeping curled up next to the dumpster, seeking shelter and some privacy, same man for the past couple of weeks with
  20. In spilled blood and desperation, their fate was sealed; in a quiet corner of the world, far removed from genocidal wars and marauding "demons," the stage is being set. Tragic soul mates, a human weapon, an elven exile and a tortured empath are pushed into play. Between ancient mysteries, relentless hunters and scheming gods, the truth runs deeper and they were trapped here long ago...
  21. Hmm... Dumb and Dumber comes immediately to mind. It probably would've been completely forgettable under normal circumstances, but when it came out I was the only person around who hated it. I had to see it a hundred times, there was no escape option. I loathe that movie, I'd gnaw my arm off to avoid watching it again. I'm a horror fan, too. Or at least I try to be. If I were to start listing the crap I saw in my unending quest for a well done horror movie, we might be here all day.
  22. Ah, so that's how it works here. Clever.
  23. Thanks for the welcome. (Introverts not allowed, huh? )
  24. Hi, another new member making the suggested intro post. I'd been quietly reading here a little while back, thought I'd make an account before beginning the long process of talking myself into posting my own work in progress here. Hard finding places you can post something lengthy, above a PG-13 rating, that isn't porn but still might actually be read. I have had some luck on another site, maybe want to try expanding. The community aspect on here is both intriguing and intimidating. Its good to see a group that seems decent at a glance, talking about things I'm interested in, but I'm very introverted and bad at talking to people. I can say I'll try anyway.
