    Chapter 1

You are right, immigrants were always the ones outside, but the natives, even though in a sense they were also immigrants, welcomed immigrants until they found that many immigrants are out for themselves and care not for those that lived here before them

America has been a land of emigrants ever since it was discovered. Who would have thought a land bridge in winter would provide such a history?

    Chapter 7

We walked with Dad, holding my hand and Beth Ann’s. I looked back and Mom was following. We stopped at a house at the end of the street . Dad went to the door and knocked. They had a metal knocker and the knock was really loud. He must have done that three times when the door was opened, rather angrily, by the woman wearing an apron. “I’m sorry Miss Elly. I thought you may have been in the kitchen.” Then this woman grabbed Dad in a hug. “Master David, is this really you? We thought we

    Chapter 6

There are two reasons, 1. At this time in history, associates heavily frowned on divorce, particularly when his wife acted so nice in front of people, and 2. He was too busy to deal with the issue and just went with it

    Chapter 1

Most of us have had some family members who immigrated after the wars. Ellis Island was the number one port of entry, and I still think it is. I don't know too much about entry via Angel Island. I'll have to look that up, Thanks.

    Chapter 1

In 1880 in a small village in Northern Italy, a woman of an undetermined age is considered by the villagers to be a ‘seer’, (also called a 'Strega’ which is Italian for ‘witch’), who divines or has 'visions’ of the future. Villagers simply call her ‘Nonna’ or 'Grandmother.’ No important decisions were made without her input. As was the custom, the men of the village met on Saturday evenings over a glass of wine. Normally the conversation centered around the weather and quality of the wine.

    Chapter 6

The drive to Philadelphia was short. Dad parked the car in a private parking lot, he paid the attendant, locked the car, taking my hand and Beth Ann’s hand, headed into the city and then I knew where we were headed when I saw the Liberty Bell. Mom complained about walking in her heels, Dad told us to stay there, he went and brought a pair of flat shoes from the car. You would think Mom would appreciate Dad doing that, nope. She complained she had to carry her high heel shoes. Dad took them and h

    Chapter 5

Saturday morning. Carl rushed us through the morning. He was in a hurry to get to town. I didn’t understand why until we arrived at Mrs. Butler’s house. Carl went to the shed in the back and got the lawn mower. “This is the flower bed that needs weeding, if you do that I’ll cut the grass.” And that is what we did. When Carl was finished mowing, he knocked on the door. A woman came and hugged Carl then she saw me. Carl had to introduce me. She told us to wait, she had just baked some cookies
