Arriving back at our hotel, I sent a message to Carmella telling her I would be arriving tomorrow afternoon. I asked the hotel clerk if he could arrange a car to drive us to Grottaferrata. I picked up our clothes which we left in the morning for cleaning and headed to our room. I found the place very interesting. For me it dispelled the idea of it being a small village rather than a city. The murals in the homes that were still standing would have given any artist a run for their money.

It seems I read somewhere that the medieval people believed that bathing caused illness. The perfumed business did well especially in France. I also read that the knight's boy was responsible to make sure the knight was clean.

In Rome there were public baths. These were visited by the gentry, not the common people. Perfumes were widely used especially among the women.

I wondered what kind of odor would remain. Are three rinses in clean water sufficient to remove the odor? But that is what they did in the city. my guess in the people who lived outside of the city probably washed their clothes in the river.
