  1. Thank you so much for the compliment. It encourages me to keep going.
  2. For a strong moment, Dinah considered turning the gun on Danni and blowing his brains out. She’d been wanting to do it all day, no - the last couple of days. But then she would have to deal with Everest. Her squire had completely turned against her and now stayed at the little shit’s side like a loyal dog. I hate you, she thought, seething inside. Her fingers tightened around the grip of the gun. I hate the both of you. But then the doors to the lift opened and Dinah found herself staring in
  3. Danni unfolded a large blueprint of the facility across the table, flattening out the creases. He could feel the mixture of weariness and impatience of the group standing around the table, their eyes dull with sleep. He’d woken everyone up; it was time to come up with a plan and get everyone moving. We’ve done enough sitting around and bickering. He tapped at the square representing the security room. “What’s in this room?” he asked, looking at Brantov and Ulana. “It’s where security gua
  4. I was tied to a chair in a dark room. The only light came from the flashlight held in my face. Juan stood just feet away, his face dark with rage. Cookie and Tinkerbell stood in the background. My head ached. Blood covered the side of my face from where Juan had hit me, already crusted over. "How did you know they were coming? Who did you tell?" Juan's voice was low and dangerous. Why? Why was he doing this to me? I had given him the data at my own expense. Was that not proof enough he c
  5. They are very barbaric people who have been living under very harsh conditions; for them this is all they know.
  6. The change in Danni's demeanor was sudden and disturbing; it was like watching the face of a cliff crumble and fall into water had Everest ever witnessed such a thing. His face, the lips pressed thin, the eyes widening in an almost comical expression of shock, plateaued, becoming flat and seemingly expressionless. Everest had seen it before several times. It happened when someone's mind cracked under the weight of something it couldn't handle. So when Danni reached for his gun, Everest wa
  7. At first Calvin had been worried about Danni, but now that worry had turned into outright panic. He backed away from Danni’s door and stepped out into the night. The weather had calmed down for the moment; several groups of people were walking in between the dormitories, either going to the pub or the sauna. After four days of being cooped up due to the blizzard, the people of Clan Wuxia wanted to let off some steam. Calvin scanned the hooded faces, looking for the familiar glint of blue ey
  8. I took a deep breath and tried not to think about the time or what I was about to do. So far everything had gone as planned. I had planned the heist - I couldn’t help but think of it as the heist - while my father was away on a business trip in London. He would be gone for a few days, leaving Uncle Charlie in charge of things. Uncle Charlie had left for home an hour ago. Against his wishes I’d insisted on staying a bit later to get ahead on paperwork. He’d smiled at me with something like pr
  9. Thank you. There is a sort of prequel called A Different World. Some things have been retconned. I will be doing a rewrite in the future, but if you are interested, feel free to give it a look.

    Kill Code

They journeyed north, past the mountains, where the land became jagged with sharp edged seracs and pressure ridges. The spiked wheels that had been added for the truck's long voyage, which according to Everest could take up to three days, kept the tires from slipping and skidding on the ice. "Clan Mureen's territory is two hundred miles in the opposite direction of the Pavilion. It will be a difficult journey. We'll have to stop during the night to let the engine cool off," Everest explained
  11. Calvin sat across from Steig Evreux, the tip of his tongue sticking out from the corner of his mouth, in an expression of the deepest concentration. He was fully convinced the bastard who thought of Chess meant it to be a mental torture device rather than a game of fun. Yet Steig insisted he learn to play, stating it was good for the mind; and so for the last two days they'd played back and forth, one game after another. And every time Steig beat him. It seemed the old man was about to beat
  12. For the next three days and nights the snow storm continued to rage without showing any signs of letting up. On the third day, Danni woke up and looked out the window - he could no longer tell the difference between night and day. Snow whipped past the window. The grey shapes of buildings, little more than shadows, loomed out of the stygian gloom. A sheet of ice covered the window, blurring everything so that Danni felt as if he was looking into a netherworld that existed outside of this
  13. Juan’s video had appeared all over the world, on just about every TV screen. My father, Uncle Charlie, and the board members of Aamodt Corp went into immediate action, hosting a press conference. Danni Aamodt claimed the video had been an act of terrorism, criminals seeking to do nothing more than create chaos. These lies should not be believed. I stood in the crowd of journalists and spectators, searching his face for the truth, but as always his face was expressionless. Why did he have t
  14. Calvin awoke, lying on a threadbare couch. Someone had thrown a raggedy blanket across him. The room he looked around was unfamiliar to him. It wasn't Danni's apartment, which was still sparsely furnished, and it wasn't his mother's, which had too much furniture. The apartment was kept neat: There was a rickety wooden coffee table, a bookshelf with tattered volumes, and a well-used armchair. Sitting in the armchair sat an old man. He wore spectacles and held a leatherbound book in his hand.
  15. The warehouse looked like an industrial fortress, guarded by a barbed wire fence. There were several guards dressed in black armor, armed with rifles or machine guns; there were two stationed behind the main gate. More stood on catwalks, out of the rain. I counted seven but those were only of what I could see. For all I knew there could have been more. Up until now I'd had my reservations about where Juan and his little posse were taking me, but now my doubts had waned considerably. Why woul
  16. Natalia sat slumped in her chair. She rubbed at her burning eyes, hating herself. She couldn't believe she had just asked Danni to kill a man. What was I thinking? How could I be so cold? But the truth of the matter was the infection scared her. In all of her time as the head of the clinic, she'd never seen anything like what Adwele had. She'd dealt with a bad outbreak with cholera…but this was outside her expertise and she had no idea what protocol she should implement. So far she'd done e
  17. They're not really zombies...
  18. Everest followed Dinah into the clinic. It had been a long night. He was cold and his eyes burned with exhaustion. He didn’t like this business with Adwele or the missing bodies...not one bit. It all felt wrong. Especially with the blizzard just hours from closing in. He liked Dinah’s behavior even less. She was acting like a madwoman, making decisions that left him feeling uncertain. In the beginning, when he’d first become her squire, she had been a competent, level-headed leader. Now everythi
  19. I would like to give a shout out to Talo Segura for making a wonderful book cover. It truly captures the tone of my story and inspires creativity. Just wanted to say thank you.
  20. I love the character so much that I want to put him in everything and haven't decided which one I'm going to finish. Lane is one of my fanboy crushes 😉.
  21. Adwele came back gradually. He would surface for a few moments, open his eyes, close them, and then slip back under. When he woke a second time, it was long enough to look around the room in confusion, then at Dinah and ask, "Where am I?" "You're at the clinic, here at Colony Wuxia," Dinah said gently, leaning forward in her chair. She looked into his dark eyes and wrinkled face. His hair was shock-white but his expression was that of a terrified child. For a moment his brow remained cre
  22. For the next two months I worked under the tutelage of my father, participating in board meetings, traveling with him to different subsidiaries, and overseeing production. I knew he was trying to prepare me to take over the company when he was ready to retire. This was the closest I could ever remember being to him than at any other point in my life. I still resented him, still blamed him for so many things: not just for the death of my mother, but for making me feel cornered, like I had
  23. Everest braced himself against the wind, miserable and cold. The gear he wore did nothing to protect him against the chill. The breathing mask he wore protected the lower half of his face, but the upper half was exposed even with the hood on. Snowflakes flattened themselves against the front of his jacket. Dinah had told him earlier in the week that the blizzard wasn't supposed to be here until tomorrow, but it seemed the snowstorm had already arrived. She picked a hell of a day to do delive
  24. Two years after my mother died, my father sent me to rehab. Uncle Charlie and he came together to form an intervention. My father's office was on the top floor of the Aamodt Corp branch here in the city. If you looked out the window you could see Doc City's skyline from a hundred and eighty stories in the air. It was quite dizzying to see all the cars, just the vaguest of moving shapes. It was impossible to see people. Danni Aamodt the IV sat at his desk, looking regal and impeccable
  25. For the umpteenth time, Calvin fell on the makeshift mats Danni had made from pads of foam. He cursed, rolled onto his feet, and turned to face Danni who stood at the other end of the room. Calvin yanked off his shirt. The thin grey fabric was covered in sweat. More sweat covered his forehead, his chest, his back. Danni on the other hand seemed to not have broken a sweat at all. Calvin didn't know which hurt worse: his body or his pride. "I don't know how much longer I can do this," he said.
