Arnie brought a blunt to his lips and took a long, slow drag from it before passing it along. Nic gave the roach a moment of consideration, but ultimately declined, passing it over to Shiv, who was sitting to his right. “You’ll probably feel better,” Arnie protested. “I certainly do.” “Not in the long run,” Nic replied. Getting high would calm him down, but it would be a slippery slope from there. He was agitated, so that meant he’d then want to drink, and drinking often

Luke released Nic once they were outside, and Nic, worried for Joey, immediately made a mad dash for the door. His fingers just grazed the handle before Luke snatched him up again and flattened him against the nearest wall, his hands on Nic’s shoulders to pin him in place. Now forced nose-to-nose with his cousin, Nic was startled into stillness. Luke was panting and his eyes were bright with fury. “You need to get a grip,” he growled. “But—” “No, shut up and listen for once. Do

Chapter 16 - A Win and an Intervention
Salander commented on Salander's story chapter in Chapter 16 - A Win and an Intervention
Nic's definitely made a lot of mistakes, but at least he's making an effort...sometimes. I do think that Amos's control over the family will begin to slip after this. -

There's a lot of bad parenting amongst the group, so progress takes time! We're only a month into the semester and it's certainly been a long one... -
It was one of the best games of Jake’s career, if not the best. The weather was great, the crowd was cheering, and Jake was unstoppable. Admittedly, LeValley High, which was an even younger team than Glendale, were average on a good day. Their lack of skill made the Titans as a whole look like professionals, but Jake was the star and everyone on the field knew it. He could practically sense the despair from LeValley every time he had the ball – which was often. Jake ended the first ha

Chapter 15 - Shiv's House
Salander commented on Salander's story chapter in Chapter 15 - Shiv's House
I wouldn't necessarily call it writer's block, but if you've been following from the beginning I did say this was a WIP. So I do have a lot of material that I'm still organizing into something cohesive. I'm sorry if you don't like the pacing right now, but I do appreciate that you are invested enough to care. I'll keep the criticism in mind. -

To clarify, the "storm" was in reference to the inevitable confrontation between him, his mother and stepfather. It was mentioned that Amos left for the night, so no worries for Joey at the moment. -
As they waited for their mother, Nic set Joey free on one of his blank canvases while he got dressed. He tried to further distract the kid with conversation as Amos continued stomping around and swearing to himself in the next room. “Is Dad mad?” Joey asked at one point. Nic shook his head, unsure of how to explain drug use to a seven-year-old. He settled for some version of honesty. “He’s not mad, just…stupid.” He had calmed down by now and stared at the hole he made in the wall wi

Chapter 14 - Breaking Point
Salander commented on Salander's story chapter in Chapter 14 - Breaking Point
That's a great summary of my interpretation of Nic as well. He's never really come to terms with his romantic attraction to men, only sexual, and that perhaps comes from a place of self-hate. Jake, on the other hand, seems to craves love and affection from someone, but has yet to find it. -

At this point I don't know what Nic's more afraid of: a repeat of past trauma or sharing that trauma with another? He's kept himself bottled up for too long. As for the VA: yes, I'm aware, but I don't *think* Amos's disability will have much of an impact on the story. I might bring it up again, but I don't want to create an association between having a service injury and being a bad person. Glad you brought it up, though, since initially I wasn't sure if I wanted to expound on that. -
A week and a half went by, and Jake was still getting used to a very different sort of school environment. At first, only his teammates interacted with him normally, which made the days blend together into a never-ending cycle of exclusion. Meg’s influence at Glendale High was pronounced: her circle of elites did not associate with Jake, and anyone that wanted to be on good terms with them did not associate with him, either. Jake took it without any obvious distress, and after the fi

Chapter 13 - An Unexpected Ally

This one's a fade to black unfortunately, but there will certainly be more to come in the future 😈 -

The internet (and high school, by extension) has a very short memory and teens are easily distracted. Sometimes the best way to fight a rumor isn't to try to disprove it, but to get everyone talking about something else... As for Meg, she's pretty, rich, and is nice to the right people, so it's easy for her to stay on top. I like to think that between tearing people down occasionally, she's built a reputation of being trustworthy. Furthermore, Jake is already known to be popular with women, so if some parts of her tweets are true, it's easier to believe the rest. All that being said, she's built a shaky house of cards to stand on. Glad you decided to tune in for this one, by the way! It's always a joy to read your comments. -
One second Nic was an ever-grouchy presence at Jake’s side, and then in the blink of an eye he practically melted into the shadows. Jake gave him a look, but Nic just shook his head in response just as Jake saw Luke marching towards them. He felt an incoming wave of dread for the second time today. Luke seemed almost panicked, which was an odd reaction to seeing his best friend and cousin together. “There you are! Where have you been?” Jake just managed to keep himself from looking a

I understand the apprehension, but as drsawsall pointed out, a lot of their conflicts only cause fleeting harm, even if they're pretty intense in the moment. Yeah, it will suck, and I won't reveal anything, but let's just say I'm cooking up some karma for Meg eventually that might make you feel better.

Hey now! I would hope the other female characters aren't earning that title 😂

Ah, high school. Don't you remember thinking everything was a much bigger deal than it was? Perspective is funny like that lol

Jake went to school with a distinct feeling of dread the next day. Early that morning, he had discovered that, at some point yesterday, Meg had blocked him on everything. In fact, so did a lot of close friends of hers. That couldn’t be good. He half expected a mob with pitchforks waiting for him in the parking lot, but to his relief, he only found Luke waiting for him just outside their building. His friend took one look at him and sighed. “I know that look of desperation. Please tell me y

Chapter 11 - Flaming Amy's
Salander commented on Salander's story chapter in Chapter 11 - Flaming Amy's
It's tempting to make Jake more preemptive for his own sake, but his naiveté/nice guy attitude is what separates him from Meg. As for their father...yeah, it's totally just him being neglectful and nothing to do with my dislike of writing good parents... -
Still processing the end of his relationship, Jake didn’t speak to Ellie for the rest of the night. She had managed to order pizza, which was waiting for him when he finally emerged from his extended shower, but he just grabbed a box and wordlessly returned to his room. Ellie didn’t try to stop him, but she was waiting for him by the kitchen island the next morning. Jake jumped when he saw her, having fully expected her to be knocked out or hugging a toilet - indeed, she certainly lo

Jake had never been great at “acting natural,” even when he wasn’t being suspected of anything. When his mother was still alive, she only needed to give him a look before he promptly started crying and confessing every sin he had ever committed. Needless to say, Ellie never trusted him with any secrets growing up. He wasn’t quite that reactive anymore, but he could barely make eye contact with Meg before they parted ways at the end of the day. She didn’t seem to suspect anything, or at lea

I wanted to reserve my final thoughts until the end, since, like others, I was hoping for a twist and Reinard was still alive. While it's not the closure I was hoping for, the fact that I was this dismayed by a character death (and in a genre I don't usually read) is a testament to your skill as a writer. Beautiful story, it will be on my mind for a while.

Chapter 9 - No Going Back
Salander commented on Salander's story chapter in Chapter 9 - No Going Back
Okay, wow, I'll try to make this all one comment! @scrubber6620: the classroom setting wasn't an accident. Nic prefers semi public places to meet with guys, and I like the "learning" metaphor @bottomguymentioned. @Parker Owens, The title is more directly referring to Jake since this is more unusual to him, but even Nic is going to have a hard time keeping Jake off his mind after this. As for all your questions, Scrubber, most of the sex scenes aren't going to go into that level of detail, lol. Some of your thoughts will be answered in future scenes, at least in passing. Maybe even an honest conversation. -
Jake thought about it for just a few hours. In truth, he was still thinking about it as he strode quickly down the desolate hallway, ringing his hands in a way hadn’t done in years. He usually stimmed by bouncing his leg – hand wringing only showed up when he was about to pop. He was nervous, of course, but also confused: seriously, what the fuck was he doing? Two weeks ago, he was pretty sure he was straight. He was in a relationship with a girl – albeit unhappily – and th
