While I am sure it was intended as a generalisation, Eric Ravilious was not a 1950s “lot”. He was, in fact, the first British war artist to be killed on active duty in WWII when his aircraft was lost off Iceland in 1942. He is renowned for his watercolours depicting the South Downs and, of course his military works.
