  1. In England they were commonly called johnnies in the 1960s to 80s at least. Less well known perhaps is that before Charles Goodyear invented vulcanised rubber in the mid 19th century, condoms were made from sheep’s intestine.

    While I am sure it was intended as a generalisation, Eric Ravilious was not a 1950s “lot”. He was, in fact, the first British war artist to be killed on active duty in WWII when his aircraft was lost off Iceland in 1942. He is renowned for his watercolours depicting the South Downs and, of course his military works.
  4. Clacton is known to be one of the most deprived parts of England, a very faded remnant of Victorian “working class” holiday resorts. It is currently best known for its MP, Nigel Farage, who seems to enjoy a good relationship with the American President. Enough said!
