To: bwnf@umail.com From: byteme@ymail.com I know a horse named Gracie. She lives next door and pulls a plow for a living. I was playing Call of Duty online last night and there was a guy on the other team who killed me about 20 times before I figured out where he was sniping from. We’re going to a basketball game tonight. A friend of mine made it into the regional finals. Tell your mom yeah, I still like tomatoes. Jeff Enough with the ‘Uncle Jeff’ shit I thought as I hit ‘s

The next morning after Evan left for work, I holed up in my office for a few hours of intense programming. When Chewy came around asking about a tree break, I stretched and decided that sounded like a good idea. I looked in on Raf, but he was still zonked out, snoring softly with one hand flung out to the side. When I put my hand in his, his fingers curled reflexively around mine. I stood there looking at him for a moment, feeling unaccountably tender toward him after caring for him yesterday.

It was a rare day that Evan and I didn’t check in with each other by phone once or twice. Not that we were calling to see what the other was up to; it was more an ‘I just wanted to hear your voice’ sort of thing. But Thursday I didn’t hear from him all day and I wasn’t sure what to think about that. Was he so busy he didn’t have time to give me a call? Or was it so dead that he was too depressed to bother? Finally, around 2:30 in the afternoon, my curiosity was killing me and it was distracti

I woke up a little after seven the next morning, and when I stretched, a tinge from my ass brought a smile to my face. Evan was sound asleep next to me, on his side with his fist curled up next to his cheek. His morning beard was heavy, giving him a scruffy appearance, and his breath smelled like a brewery, and he had never looked so good to me. Letting Evan sleep off some more of the monumental hangover I figured he’d have, I slid quietly out of bed, pulled on jeans and a t-shirt, and ease

Thank God I had programmed to record Callie’s cooking class well in advance because I totally forgot about the damn thing until I was watching Evan at the stove that night. I jumped up and took a quick look at the calendar, then slumped in relief. It was the day after tomorrow, plenty of time for me to call and wish her luck. She and I emailed back and forth a couple times a week, but something as momentous as a television appearance rated a phone call. “Hello?” “Hey, Callie, it’s Jeff

Sharon had put off moving until the Monday after the open house, so Evan and I showed up at her apartment around 7am with coffee and doughnuts. Rafael was already there with one of the work trucks. She’d taken all the small stuff over during the week, so we just had the furniture to move. Unlike most women, Sharon travelled fairly light and it didn’t take us long to get loaded and over to the new house. We parked in the alley that ran along the back of the Victorian and unloaded through the

Evan and I drove Ben to the airport the Saturday after New Year’s. He’d been at our place since noon yesterday, just hanging out, helping me sort through the stuff in the barn. Evan worked that morning, but played hooky in the afternoon and we took advantage of the mild weather to take the bikes out. Firing up the Pan in the echo-y cavern of the old barn made my ears ring, so I pushed her outside as Evan dusted off his bike. We hadn’t ridden hardly at all toward the end of the year, and I smiled

Sunday we slept in a little, finally rolling out of bed to try the new shower, where we scrubbed each other with Evan’s luffa. I’d never owned such a thing, but I was a convert from the first time we’d showered together at his place when he’d loaded it with suds and rubbed slow circles down my back. I eventually got out to shave at the sink, but Evan stayed in there playing with the new shower heads. As I was pulling on my jeans, his cell rang, so I flipped it open and said, "Yeah?" There w

Friday morning after Evan left for work, I whipped through Maggie’s little cookbook looking for things I could make for tomorrow, jotted out a grocery list and headed for town. Back home I spent the next several hours channeling Martha Stewart as I put together salads and baked. By late afternoon the counter was covered with cookies, the fridge bulged with four cold salads and a big ham, and I’d had my fill of the kitchen for the day. Chewy and I went out to the edge of the woods where I clipped

Evan threw together quesadillas while I built our first fire. There was a good-sized wood pile outside the back door and I remembered seeing more out behind the barn, but eventually, I'd have to get out Grandpa's axe and learn how to chop. When it was burning nicely, I poured us each a glass of the Chardonnay Sharon had left for us. We ate sitting on the floor in front of the fire, toasting our toes and smiling every time our eyes met. It was hard to believe that only a week ago, I’d been sure E

Evan's unfaithfulness was utterly devastating. I’d never been hit so hard emotionally, and I could barely think. I watched surprise flit across his face as I slammed my helmet back on, fired up the bike and roared out of the lot. I drifted sideways into the street without checking traffic, rear tire smoking, then straightened the bike up and opened the throttle. I followed the familiar route back to the freeway and dropped onto the ramp for home. The queasy burn of betrayal churned thr

Sunday morning I was awake early, painfully aware that Evan was leaving today for his three weeks in New York. I watched him sleep for a few minutes, running the back of my knuckle lightly along his shoulder, then pulled my shorts on and headed for the kitchen to see about coffee. When I padded silently into the room, Raf was leaning against the counter, his back to me, staring out the window, one hand hooked up over the opposite shoulder, one bare foot propped on top of the other. He was shirtl

I went to Patterson the next day, and Saturday afternoon Evan's dad called. They chatted a while with Evan contributing an occasional 'I see' or 'yeah, yeah.' At the end of the conversation, Evan said, "Okay, I'll plan on it. Thanks a lot, dad." After he hung up, Evan turned to me with a rueful expression on his face. "Well, I have good news and bad news. That was my dad. I talked to him a month or so ago about maybe starting a family law division. He knows that's where I want to conce

Evan's gaze had dropped to the pouch of the jock and his eyes followed my every move. I started to do a slow roll with my hips, grinding into the air in front of his face. He was wearing baggy shorts and his cock started to tent the front of them, until he shoved his hand in his pants and straightened his dick up his belly. I spread my feet a little further apart and bent my knees so that the big muscles in my thighs tensed and flexed as I swayed. It wasn't long before Evan was entranced as

I worked hard on the house that week, getting the two spare bedrooms painted, patching the shingles on the garage roof, and finishing up several other jobs. By the time I threw my bag in the Jeep on Friday afternoon, I was ready for some R&R and the feel of Evan’s long, lean body in my hands. The drive went by quickly, and he rang my cell just as I was pulling into the parking spot next to his garage. “Hey. I’m runnin' late. Prolly another hour.” “Well, shit. I just got here and I

"I need to tell you more about Rafael, Kenny and me." Evan paused. "Actually, maybe it'll all make more sense after you meet them." "So you're gonna leave me hangin' till then?" "Yeah, sorry. I want you to be around them a little before I try to explain our relationship." I pulled back and looked at him for a second, then shrugged. "Whatever." I was slightly irked at being teased like that, but I figured he had his reasons. I slid further down the bed and started shoving the

The last Thursday in July, Evan called me in the evening, his voice strained and tired. "I don't think I can come up tomorrow. I been barfin' all day, and now I've got the shits. I ate with my parents last night, so I don't think it's food poisoning; must be the flu or something." I hated to let a weekend go by without seeing him. "I can come down there." "Oh, man, you don't wanna get anywhere near me right now. It's gross. And I don't want you to catch it, in case it's contagious."

Evan got back from his trip safely and came to my place the next weekend, our third together. It was wet and drizzly, so we stayed around the house most of the time, reading, watching the tube, jerkin' off to porn on the ‘net. Evan seemed a bit quiet, but he was relaxed and affectionate, and we spent a lot of time in bed, lazily making love, learning each other’s bodies more thoroughly. In addition to being ticklish, there was a spot high on the inside of his thigh that made his dick quiver

What was it with the bar? Couldn’t be someplace him and Luke had hung out cause they hadn’t been of drinking age when Luke was killed. Was it near the site of the accident? He’d never said where it happened, so I had no idea. I blew out a breath and dropped my head back onto the cushion with my eyes closed. Why couldn’t anything be easy? Something so simple as what the fuck to have for dinner turned into this emotional event. I pushed to my feet and rubbed the knot on my head as I went to find E

I totally couldn’t concentrate on Friday, so I took the dog down to the river and ran us both into the ground, washed the Jeep, packed a bag, taste-tested Callie's new cookie recipe when I took Chewy next door, fucked around until I couldn't stand the suspense any longer, and finally roared out of the driveway at noon. Evan was 100 miles away and I didn't want to be late. The city where we’d walked around the gardens is about half way between us; I skirted it on the freeway bypass, smi

We each had a big slice of Callie's apple pie with vanilla ice cream when we got home. As Evan dished it out, I went to my office and came back with the file folder of the Pan's drawings. He pulled his chair around next to mine and lifted the top sheet, my first rough sketches, for a closer look. These drawings looked the most like Evan; they’d been done while he was still fresh in my mind. I'd started out doodling one evening and ended up doing several small studies, mostly of him looking over

I groaned and rolled over to stare at the ceiling. There was only one person who would be at my door at 8am on a Sunday. Evan stirred beside me, mumbling a little, but quieted when I rubbed a hand across his warm shoulder. "Shhh, it's okay." I rolled out of bed and dragged boxers up over my butt as I walked down the hall, scratching my crotch and yawning. When I opened the door, I had to lower my gaze to the beaming face of Caledonia Zabrynski, my next door neighbor. Her long gray hair was

Saturday morning I woke to an empty bed. I rolled over to his pillow, burying my face in it as I curled up, trying to ease the sharp stab of disappointment. Oh, Evan… I lay there feeling sorry for myself, not yet awake enough to remember that he couldn’t get into the garage to get his bike. I was so bummed that I almost missed the squeak of the back door as he let the dog out. Heaving a huge sigh of relief, I rolled to my back and grinned at the ceiling. Funny how your emotions can do an about-f

We parked the bikes in my bay at the garage, had a quick beer with the boys, and hoofed it to an Italian joint down the block. Conversation lagged as we waited for our drinks, reminding me that I knew nothing about this guy except his first name and that he was a hot fuck. Things didn't improve much as we ate, and I began to wonder if that's all this was - a one-night-stand in daytime guise. Normally that would be okay with me - hook up with a hot guy for a few days, maybe even a weekend or two,
