After so many years, the world of DO is...over. These stories might be 'just internet fiction', but they were some of the best i've ever read. I started reading the series by accident, actually. I did a search for the TV series of the same name and up popped a link to this story...I quickly became an addict, reading about 20 chapters in 12 hours...back when the chapters were a bit longer After the first gorge, it was a process of waiting, sometimes patiently, sometimes not, for the next installment. The gaps could be days, coul;d grow into weeks and months, but eventually there was always the excitement of seeing "Chapter 12" where once there had been a blank space; a new button to press the the promise of more Davey and Brian to come. In the time I have waited to learn more about Davey Jones and Brian Breckenridge, I have also grown. From being a highschool student, awkward, a little pretentious and unsure of who I was, through to a wandering backpacker in south america to a uni student with a great partner and confidence in my role in the world, not much has remained stable. I've moved to a different city, with a new circle of friends and new passions, tastes and interests. Yet this story has always been there, and it will always be. One day i'll end up in Eureka, Nevada; Modesto or Moscow; and I'll remember once more the tragedy and the comedy, the drama and the joviality of the series. Enough pantsing around... Thank you, Dan; well done.

[dkstories] Doing It Right - Chapter 10
hughmelbourne replied to LittleBuddhaTW's topic in Promoted Author Discussion Forum
To think I missed out on this story because of my irritation at the end of DD and DOR...well, i'm back. Nitpick: Dais Girl was 1964 and sank Goldwater, not HHH. It gave Johnson the highest Democratic margin of victory since FDR, and unbeaten since. Although there was of course the 1984 Reagan lake, when the whole nation tured blue (because at the time the GOP was blue and the Democrats red, the correct colours). He won every state besides Minnesota, and of course DC. "Vote for President Johnson on November 3rd. Because the stakes are too high for you to stay at home." Almost as famous as "it's morning again in America", and "there's a bear in the woods", two Reagan classics. I'm prparing to major in American studies when I start Uni next year -
If it weren't for Shane, there would be a lot more replies in this thread Tyler is very good. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it was just as addictive as Shane. I especially liked the chapters based around Crestwood. Top notch story, just a bit overshadowed by Shane

Great. I was worried a while back that gay authors was drying up, but over Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday I devoured Shane, read what's posted of Cameron, and from then on i've been reading Tyler. I finished it about 10 minutes ago Shane is fantastic. Tyler and Cameron, too, but Shane really stands out. I really got a feel of the town, of the people...I'm not generally able to vividly 'see' a story, but I could with Shane. I feel like I know exaxtly what the beach at the bottom of the cliff was like; I have a complete mental image of Derek and of Jimmy and of Tad. Some of the detail in this got me wondering just how close it was to being autobiographical, and that feeling continued with Tyler. I'm not sure if you know someone who went through that kind of abuse or if it was you yourself. Either way, I offer genuine sympathy. In all honesty it's not a topic I consider often, and fortunately I've never had to; but even though I have no personal experience with abuse your writing was able to explain quite a lot to me, and beyond being a totally addictive story with significant points of interest, and it's an emotional rollercoaster, etc.; it's educational. Whether that was an intention or not, but that is the primary reason for my gratefulness to you. So, thank you for the story in all it's facets.

[dkstories] Do you want the Do Over Series to end?
hughmelbourne replied to brax's topic in Promoted Author Discussion Forum
Maybe his father goes back and Davey is never born? Nah. Or maybe the story of one of Sean's DOs? Or how about they accidentally get sent forward 21 years? -
[dkstories] Redux 36
hughmelbourne replied to Philistine's topic in Promoted Author Discussion Forum
I think his memory of all timelines but this one will be wiped-ie, it'll be like he is living a normal life, just in a different situation then the original. All the 'big' things are still the same, which suggests, in my mind, that in the end the fundamentals will be the same but Davey's family will be different. -

I've always thought of Jenny as looking like a younger version of Shannon from LOST. -
[dkstories] Do Over Movie
hughmelbourne replied to EMoe57's topic in Promoted Author Discussion Forum
Well, I absolutely loved the TV show 'Do Over" and always thought that Davey looked like Penn Badgely, who plays the protagonist in the show, Joel Larsen. Best friend Pat is sorta like my mental image of Trevor, but with the wrong hair colour. -
3 and 4 look the most professional, but they also look a bit like many other logos. #1 is the most distinctive, plus similar to the current one; but #2 looks not overly dissimilar to the current one, as well. My vote is for number 1.

Benefit #22 of living in Australia-Get to read updates of DOR first if they are posted in the early hours of the US morning A good set-up chapter. S P O I L E R S B E L O W ! ! ! ! The house seems nice, and as I said, it seems like a set-up chapter. No really big news, but the creation and establishment of lots of storylines, which indicates DOR might go on for a while yet . Good to get Sean into the story, and further secure the monetary side. BUT... I can't help but feel something isn't going to go so well. When Davey says it's looking like it'll be the best timeline yet...Dan is evil and twisted and that thought of Davey's almost gaurantees significant problems, although probably of a more personal nature then in the third timeline. A good chapter that's got me waiting for more

*Steps into a shark cage, carefully bolts door* Am I the only one who wanted Rory to stay on the plane? *Closes eyes, sings Rule, Brittania and hopes for the best* Seriously though, here's my reason: It would've made more more chapters. As I see it, it can still be wrapped up in 2-3 chapters. If he went to Nevada, there'd be at least 3 chapters in it before he realises he need to go back to Arizona when eddie drives over, plus a chapter on his return. We're all being very unselfish and being glad for Rory, but I say, stuff Rory! I need my fix! Dan, if you stop DOR within a week of the end of DD, I'm going to need a new addiction, and unless the next Carter book starts soon, i'll be a mess. *Hopes it's safe to come out of cage*

Is Ryan Seacrest (American Idol, American Top 40) Gay?
hughmelbourne replied to Myr's topic in The Lounge
That's his business, but it's still fun to speculate. I'd say no, he's just a metrosexual. -

Guys, come on. It's ARIZONA, not Nevada. Sheesh, it takes an Aussie to say it... Very good writing, btw, glomph, even if your geography is a bit off -
[Topher_Lydon] Carter books
hughmelbourne replied to Topher Lydon's topic in Promoted Author Discussion Forum
I read all the Carter series-and reurn of the Sun-in a 5 day period. My back, eyes and arse hated you, but my brain adored them I've been avoiding the Falcon Banner; leaving it for a rainy day. I don't want to start it until I have a good 2 or three day window in which to absolutely gorge myself on it; i'm sure it'll be as good as RotS and the Carter series. BTW, whilst I was very sad to see Andy and Will split up for a while there, I liked Mark. I hope he doesn't fade out during this next book. Also, we need way more of...I can't believe i've forgotten his name! The french canadian guy...shares the house...jetsetter...campaign manager...For some reason Jody comes into my head but I know that isn't it. ARGH! Must check. Best not look for too long, in case I have to re-read it all again over the next week Brody. D'uh. Hit me about 30 seconds after I posted. -
Bottom left is Seth-b/c of the cap I always thought of Rory as a red-head :S

Is up. Davey's dad seems to be a right bastard, and his 'nag-ma' seems to be a less ympathetic character then previously. No sign of Brian yet, and I think we'll still be waiting for a while.

well, his surname is really, really cool, but no. Perhaps as a second middle name, ie; Hugh *middle name* *his surname* *my surname* BTW, Julian, are you British? You spelt 'mum' correctly

Rad-if you read carefully, they did have knowledge of the build-up. I think the biggest problem was the fact that actual Mexicans were the soldiers, not just imports. Australia doesn't have a land border, so it's obviously a bit different for us, but if a nation on your own nation's doorstep goes commie, especially a nation with a hundred million people in it, some people are going to want to fight for the cause...even if that's only 10%, that's still ten million people right on the border...some'll slip through. Also, remember that this is the 80s-the US is less powerful, and the USSR is also very very powerful, and with the whole Shervadnadze thingie, as or more militarily capable and with equal or better intelligence services. Add a dash of it being fiction; a few nukes and chemical weapons, and it's totally understandable-and completely unfortunate-but them's the breaks.

I sorta always had the feeling that DOR was a filler; the 'Two Towers' of the DOR series. Request-Davey and Brian go on holiday in Australia. Perhaps Melbourne hosts the 1988 olympics or something. It was good to see that there was more election coverage in this timeline, I appreciated that

[DomLuka] With Trust ch 1
hughmelbourne replied to Wynter's topic in Promoted Author Discussion Forum
I think the writing is excellent-but I have no real feelings towards any of the characters. No loyalty at all to Nelson, no anger at Joe, no amusement at Caleb, no interest in Haily. I dunno, it just seems the friendship group is very artifical; i'm not sure you could find anything like it in the 'real world'-but I could be wrong. I'll keep reading, but compared to your previous stories, it isn't off to the best start. That said, many things don't and turn out excellently. The writing is good, the storylines might develope to be good...but the characters i'm not sure about. I thought it'd be better to be straight up now rather then chapter 10 when the characters are firmly in place. -
