    Chapter 23

"Jason wake up! Now!" Ronan ordered harshly. "What?" Jason asked fuzzily, mind still stuck in sleep. "Whats going on?" "Wake up!" Ronan repeated, yanking the covers off the bed with one hand as he stripped down with the other. "No time to explain, just wake up and dress!" Ronan yanked open his closet and rummaged around for a moment before pulling out a false wall and revealing a hidden compartment inside. Tossing a pair of swords on the bed, he pulled out a set of clothing as well.
  2. Memories of Eric: When All Else Fails Sarah pushed her children behind her as the maniac waved his knife around. "Oh yes, you bitch, gonna get what's coming to you... you and your little dogs too!" The man giggled as he contemplated the boy and girl hiding behind her legs. "Get away from them, or so help me!" the woman blustered desperately. The man saw right through the bluff, and continued to advance. Seeing no other choice, the woman leaped forward with a screech, hoping to grab

    Chapter 22

Jason's eyes snapped open, but for a few seconds they refused to focus. Finally he blinked the crusty remnants of several days immobility away and managed to look around. Ronan was holding him gently from behind, snoring. Jason sighed. He'd felt Ronan slip into sleep the instant he'd finished the 'guided tour' of his own soul. It had been... interesting. Moving gingerly he slowly worked his way loose of the bed and Ronan's arms. Ronan snorted and stopped snoring, but didn't quite wake

    Chapter 21

"Jason, could you please tell me what's wrong?" Ronan asked one last time as they lay in bed. Jason simply shook his head where it rested on Ronan's shoulder. "I need to think through some things, and I need to do it myself," he said softly. "Alright, love," Ronan whispered. Slowly his breath deepened, and Jason allowed his own to follow suit. Jason floated in darkness and watched as the stars rolled by. The darkness wrapped around him and held him close, comfortable, like a warm bla

    Chapter 20

Jason ducked as a whip of fire cracked over his head, turning the motion into a roll to the left as another whip tried to take his leg off at the ankle. For all that she was going 'easy' on them, Lara was pushing them hard, and with very little effort on her part. Oh, Jason could have tried to overwhelm her with sheer power, but there were three problems with that. First, he couldn't always rely on being able to do that, so he needed to learn how to do more with less. Second, it was again

Dedication: To all those who helped me get where I am today, who are too many to count and list in their entirety, ranging from beta readers, editors, and others who helped with forming this story to those that have simply helped me as a person and author to become better: Thank you. This story wouldn't be what it is without your help. Author's Foreword Writing this story has been a labor of love. I don't remember the entire genesis of this story anymore. Chapter 19

"Ronan, are you--" Jason began. "Stupid question," he reprimanded himself as he pulled Ronan close. "What's wrong?" he asked, rocking the shivering and sobbing Ronan back and forth in an effort comfort him, but Ronan just kept sobbing. Jason wasn't even sure if Ronan had heard him. Jason just held him and tried to sooth him. Thinking of his powers, Jason tried inserting his mind into Ronan's, gently seeking some way to comfort him and got the mental equivalent of a roundhouse for his troubl
  8. Memories of Eric: The Road to Hell The river was a long, long way down. A long way to fall. Benjamin had been told it would break your neck on impact if you fell off the bridge. He figured the same held true for someone who jumped. It's not like anyone would miss him. His parents barely spoke to him, his classmates hated him, teachers couldn't care less. No friends worth the name, he didn't have a girlfriend – what a joke, the idea of him with a girlfriend – and certainly no one to c

    Chapter 18

Jason adjusted his collar nervously as he gave his appearance one final go over in the mirror built into the sun visor in the passenger seat of the car. "Do I have to?" he asked plaintively. "Yes," Lara told him firmly. "I hate this monkey suit," he complained. "No, you hate your punishment," Lara said bitingly, "the 'monkey suit' is just an excuse." "I still hate it," Jason replied, opening the door. "This is so not going to be fun," he moaned. "It's not meant to be fun,"

    Chapter 17

"Hey guys, I'm back!" Paul announced as he walked in the door. "I see you dealt with those... protestors..." Jason couldn't see him, but he had no doubts his brother was staring at the clothes strewn everywhere. Half the clothes had gotten pulled off, and half had been ripped right off their bodies in their haste. Ronan, as Jason should have predicted, was not one for half measures. He was one to dive, headfirst, right after he maybe remembered to check the depth. Mmmm.... head fi

    Chapter 16

"You aren't supposed to sleep," Ashley scolded Jason, shaking his shoulder. "I'm not sleeping," Jason answered her with a sigh. "Though I was having the most wonderful daydream!" Ashley tried to straighten the blanket covering him. "What do you mean by-" she started to say. The sudden and clearly visible answer to the unfinished question earned Jason a shocked "Oh!" Jason rolled onto his side to conceal the tent that had been hidden in the folds of the covers. "Yeah, that's what

    Chapter 15

"What do you mean, too late?" Cody demanded. "The kid's real father just got screwed over by his wife. The situation is spiraling completely out of control, and..." Jason took a deep breath. "Alright, I need to keep calm. There is a way out of this, I know it!" "What is 'this'?"Cody asked. Jason glanced at him and shook his head. "Bad news. David's parents are on a knife edge; pushed just a little further in the wrong way and they'll kill him. His real father just got accused of mole

    Chapter 14

Lara shoved the e.p.t. box back into Ashley's hands and ran from the room. Jason turned and glared at Ronan. "OK, what do you know?" "There are some things-" Ronan began. "Ronan Koken, you contemptible, no-good, devious, plotting son-of-bitch," Ashley swore, "for once in a lifetime answer a straight question with an honest answer!" Ronan snarled, "Do not address me in such a tone, woman!" "Then give an honest answer when it's called for!" Ashley shouted back, tears in her eyes. "I w

    Chapter 13

Jason woke up the next morning still tired. For a few vague moments he couldn't figure out what woke him, then another childish scream resonated through the house. The kids were up, therefore the adults were up too, like it or not. Groaning, he tossed the covers aside and stumbled to the door to track down a restroom. Blushing, he darted back to the bed long enough to grab a pair of pants off the ground before wandering out the door. He wasn't at home where nudity, much less boxers, was consi
  15. Memories of Eric: Teach a Man to Fish Brendan ran like hell, the whooping and hollering of the other boys spurring him on. His breath came in ragged stitches and his side burned, but he couldn't stop. They'd beat him half to death if they caught him! Tree branches snagged at his clothing, ripping a hole in his jacket -- ah crap, mother would kill him when she saw that! -- but he didn't slow down. The path twisted and turned through the dense woods in the park, and he didn't even see the man

    Chapter 12

They'd gathered together in an impromptu conference in a room apparently set aside for such things. "Mary is already on her way here, gentlemen," Lara announced. She'd changed into skin-tight leather that creaked slightly as she moved, but left her with complete freedom of movement and the ability to freeze a (straight) man in his tracks in a glance. "We've done our best to prepare, but this operation is going to be a hip-shot whether we like it or not." "Gee, don't sound so happy Lara,"

    Chapter 11

Jason had sensed that Ashley needed time, so rather than have her guide him straight to Lara, he'd convinced her to spend some time finishing the conversation they'd had earlier about how spells 'grew'. So she'd guided him to a nearby living room, one of several in the house it appeared, and started teaching. "So as long as it doesn't actively violate any of the rules you've placed yourself, your spells will gradually develop new rules to help better act on your original intent?" Jason ask

    Chapter 10

Jason walked back to the apartment, hands in his pockets as he thought. He'd actually chosen to trust an assassin with his life. He knew he could trust that assassin. Turning left at the corner, he mused on the oddity of the situation, mind focused on the strangeness of it all. He'd been living with Ronan for all of six and a half months now. He'd come a long way, but before he'd met Quentin, he'd never have believed he'd come this far. To trust a cold blooded killer... He mused absentminded

    Chapter 9

Jason slammed the door shut and ran to catch Paul. He moved so fast he actually managed to catch his brother before he hit the ground, and he was rapidly surrounded by others seeking to give aid. "What the hell just happened?" Jason screamed angrily as he lay his brother down. "No clue, nothing like that has ever happened before!" Ronan told him. "Shit, Paul's not breathing!" Jason cried out. "No, no no no no NO!" Jason looked his brother in the eyes and drew upon his powers. "Be he
  20. Memories of Eric: Kids Will Be Kids "Outta my way, faggot!" the star linebacker Don Torelli shouted... right after he bowled over Quentin Hearth. Snickers and muffled laughs erupted in the hallway. Quentin, flushing, just gathered up his books as best as he could and slammed shut his locker. Ever since he'd been forced out of the closet, they'd all been like that, every last one of them. All the jocks, all the 'cool kids', the in cliques, all of them. Making his life miserable as best

    Chapter 8

Everyone stared as the man clutched his head and groaned for a moment, before his eyes began to glass over. He slowly crumpled to the ground, muscles failing him as he fell deeper and deeper under the spell of one word. "Sleep!" he had been commanded, and despite a valiant battle, he was going to do just that. Still, his struggle was sufficient to keep him from going so deeply asleep as to loose all muscle control; a small mercy, to be sure, but still a mercy. The others in the cell re

    Chapter 7

The pain, the anger, was too great. Jason simply shut down, memories coming in short pulses like photographs etched with the acid of human lives on his soul. One: The figure on the rooftop jerked back for a second, before toppling over the edge. He didn't see where he'd hit him. Two: He'd swung around, pistol still held in two hands. Red hair framed the face, and blue eyes opened wide as the left shoulder became a bloody ruin. Three: Jason corrected his aim and the blue eyes gazed
  23. Memories of Eric: If at First You Don't Succeed "Five-State Teen helpline, how can I help you today?" a woman answered. "I... I don't know..." Tommy answered into the pay phone. "I just... I can't take it anymore..." He couldn't see her, but he could hear her smile at him. "Tell me what's wrong, honey." He cried, he could almost see the loving expression on her face. "I've got a razor... I just can't..." "What's going on?" she asked, concern clear in her voice. "I was g

    Chapter 6

Time, as inconsiderate as always, ground onward with no regard for the two lover's needs. Wrapped together in a tangled mess of limbs and sheets they slept the night away in the comfort of each other's arms, waking from time to time to fly again before going back to sleep. Alas, all too soon it was morning, and time to wake up. With barely a groan, Eric silenced the alarm clock before it could wake up Jason and went back to sleep himself. Predictably, someone noticed Jason's sleeping in.

    Chapter 5

The next morning their schedules continued as normal. Ronan spent an hour or two drilling Jason and Paul in self defense, mostly making them work through various moves and styles he'd been teaching them. He'd said months ago, "Either you understand what I've been telling you about the mindset of a fight, or you don't. Droning on about it won't help either way -- only being forced to use the knowledge. Be ready for that day, but rest assured I won't bring it down on you simply to temper the s
