The Prompt File - 2. 21 Fruits and Veggies

Write about any fruit or vegetable in which you describe how it looks, feels, tastes, smells, sounds (if at all, when shaken) and essence. Evoke the fruit or vegetable, but do not name it!

It’s there, a dried husk, at the end of its life covered in vibrant colors full of new life. But there was a time when it was just a seed planted gently in the ground, watered, tended, weeded, loved. It grew daily. First tiny green twinned leaves then more a tiny tendril of life whipping around anything it could reach, climbing for the sun. Soon white flowers appeared along with bees and not long after – there it was.

It was green back then with little racing stripes of yellow. At first it was all the same thickness, but soon it took on a distinct shape – like that of a snowman – a two ball one at least. It took so long to grow. Nearly five months until it was ready to pick and then it still wasn’t ready. A knife was needed to separate it from the vine.

The skin was thick but easy to bruise; tough but so fragile. It sat; waiting, finishing ripening as the snows fell. It would have to wait for spring to be useful. As planting time neared again its skin had turned hard. When picked up it rattled – the sound of loose seeds inside. It was time.

And now the seeds were planted, and there it was at the end of its life covered in vibrant colors full of new life.

I had no idea how a gourd grew. Very interesting. Man, if I wrote this... there isn't much I could write about w/o doing some research :P

I tried to pick something different. I hoped I did a fairly decent job of it.
