Imprisoned - Prologue. The Story So Far

Nobody knew exactly how it started, but what everyone did know was that it started in the year 2021 with a flu virus.

At first the CDC and WHO called it H2N4 but we all called it Northern Flu, because it originated in Russia. The symptoms mimicked the flu however, it progressively got worse and caused respiratory failure, internal hemorrhaging, seizures, and eventually death. Within months it had become a global pandemic and there were no signs of it slowing down.

In the year 2023 a massive earthquake struck the Western United States destroying entire communities. Many people left the smaller communities and began migrating to the major metropolitan areas, where the government was helping to rebuild. However, many people were still displaced by these events and left the cities to form their own communities in the ruins of the forgotten zone.

In 2025 scientists were still scrambling to find a vaccine for the H2N4 virus, and only one showed promise, Abutofoxin. The doctor responsible for engineering it Dr. Jameson Clayton, an epidemiologist in San Francisco, tested the vaccine on himself because of resistance for human trials from the government. But it had adverse effects. It instead progressed the rate of infection, mutating H2N4 to become more contagious and kill it's victims even quicker. This event was known as The Clayton Outbreak. The government was successful at containing it in San Francisco by destroying all the bridges and tunnels that led to the island city, and effectively considering it a dead zone with no contact and no one allowed in or out.

In the year 2028 the only habitable cities on the West Coast were Seattle, Portland and Los Angeles. After the Clayton Outbreak and the containment of San Francisco, the United States Government pulled aid out of the western states. As a result, the states west of the Rocky Mountains decided to band together to form the Pacific Republic to try and secede from the east. This started a civil war that lasted until 2031 with the Pacific Republic successfully seceding from the United States and becoming its own nation.

At the time of the Northern Flu Outbreak I was working as an 3rd year resident in the Emergency Room at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. I came home to find my fiancee, James, dead in our kitchen. I tried to resuscitate him, but it didn't work and he died.

I was conscripted by the Army of The Pacific Republic in 2029, to work as a Trauma Doctor during the Pacific Revolution. After the war ended I remained in the service at Fort Bakersfield, taking a position as Chief Medical Officer.

This is my story...

There are seven chapters posted, and I am just now finding this story. After reading the prologue I think this will be a most enjoyable read! You have set up a lot of possibilities. And of course with the current Covid epidemic your story is extra interesting. I am moving on to a binge read. Thanks.

Getting a late start.

We have a bleak landscape and a protagonist who is bound to have plenty of issues given all he's experienced during this time.
