The Storm Wolf: Gathering Clouds - 8. Clusters

Clusters: skin, blood, muscle, nerves, bone, and perhaps, deep within, the soul itself.

Carefully, I placed the amplifier on Luther's head, making a few final adjustments.

"I've modified it for you; it should fit perfectly." Despite saying that, I double-checked once more, flicking his ear when he shifted restlessly. "Once synchronize, it's extremely dangerous to disconnect--so focus!" I scolded, and Luther lowered his ears in apology.

"Doesn't feel like anything special," he said, blinking as his gaze drifted around.

"Like most tools made from adamantine, it won't produce any effects until it absorbs vibrations." I stepped back, giving Luther enough space. "Now, resonate and connect with the amplifier."

A violent wave erupted in the psychic realm, spreading outward from Luther's center.

No matter how many times I felt it, the experience was always terrifyingly majestic.

"Oh," Luther glanced around, as though seeing through the hull of the ship. "The connection... seems successful."

He spoke cautiously, but I understood what it felt like when a sudden multitude of presences filled one's consciousness.

"Don't touch the drones yet. This is just to help you get accustomed." I gestured toward the small adamantine fragments scattered around us. "Start here, as we practiced. I need to be sure you can control the amplifier before we go any further..."

There was a sharp crack, faster than I could react, but I still managed to catch most of the fragments hurtling toward me.

"Richter!" Luther shouted, but I raised a firm paw to keep him in place.

"I told you, disconnecting after synchronization is extremely dangerous!" I barked, hoping he'd grasp the seriousness of the situation. At least he froze, seeming to understand the gravity of it all.

I touched the lines of cuts across my face, wiping away the blood as I expanded my consciousness, repairing flesh and mending tissues back together.

Slowly, I opened my eyes. As my vision cleared, I saw adamantine shards embedded in the walls and floor, and Luther standing uneasily, looking close to tears.

"I'm fine," I said gently, aiming to soothe him as I treated the wounds on my arm and side. "This was my oversight, not your fault."

But Luther's expression didn't seem persuaded in the least. The way he opened his mouth, about to speak, tugged painfully at my heart.

I knew he hoped, as in our previous attempts, that we would stop here for today.

But that wasn't an option anymore. We'd delayed for too long; if I didn't start training Luther to wield the Empire's Heart now, it might be too late.

I was certain I'd cast a shadow over him, but besides me, no one else possessed the skills and ability needed to guide him in controlling the Empire's Heart. If worse came to worst, I might need to seal away this memory...

As I gazed into Luther's deep brown eyes, I weighed this worst-case scenario in my mind, hoping I'd never have to carry it out.

"Do the drones still reject you?" I asked, pulling the adamantine fragments scattered around him back into place.

"Yes." Luther held his paws before his nose, glancing between his palms. "I don't know why, but... the sense of rejection is intense."

"Hmm..." I folded one arm across my chest, gripping my chin thoughtfully.

Could it be that Luther's heightened sense of perception was reaching too deep, causing rejection? Or was it simply a more straightforward variable? Yet the Empire's Heart shouldn't reject its true master...

"I did try to sense them the way you taught me," Luther said distantly. I could feel a faint tremor from the drones, evidence that he was attempting to reach out with his consciousness. "But... it's too different," he said, frustration clouding his face as his ears and tail drooped. "There are so many, but each is unique... there's no way to synchronize them all with my mind."

So, his refined sensitivity really was working against him?

Whether or not this was the right guess, it was probably our only lead to explore.

"A mass of countless, subtly distinct units, together forming a whole." I softened my tone, smiling to encourage him. "Does anything come to mind?"

"Snowflakes?" Luther tilted his head, folding one ear back. He must've heard me mention them often, as the silver amplifier on his head glinted with a faint light.

"Yes, snowflakes." I nodded, letting a few adamantine shards float by my side. "But snowflakes are only the surface. The true answer... is me." I shaped a few intricate ice crystals, pressing my right paw over my heart, flashing Luther a grin. "It's us."

"Us?" He tilted his head, looking more puzzled than ever.

"Yes. Us." I emphasized, nodding. "Each of us."

"But... aren't we all very different?" His gaze shifted from one ice crystal to another.

"Yes, each one of us is unique." I intensified my consciousness, more adamantine shards rising and forming varied ice crystals. "But we often overlook what we share."

I noticed a hint of red creeping into Luther's eyes, so I moved slowly toward him. It seemed synchronizing with the amplifier was already too taxing for him. This kind of technique, demanding utmost precision, would still require Luther to practice more--but time was our scarcest resource.

"Snow and Nyx have opposite fur colors, but we're all gray wolves." I gently cradled Luther's face, my thumb tracing the edge of the amplifier. "Herbivores and carnivores are built differently, but we all have red blood." I loosened my psychic boundaries, letting them merge with Luther's consciousness. "Each of us is different, but we're also so alike."

Guiding the torrent of energy that was Luther's chaotic force, I synchronized with every drone of the Empire's Heart. Tiny points of light appeared within our consciousness.".

"But what matters most is that, in all those similarities and differences, you'll always find the brightest one, guiding everything." I pressed lightly over his heart, the resonance rumbling powerfully. "This is why I am who I am, and why we are who we are."

In that profound, unspoken truth, I kissed Luther. Our consciousness joined with the myriad points of light, drifting and shimmering in the void of the universe, then merging into one.

This scene takes place during the final year of Richter's life, which means Luther still hasn't been able to overcome the trauma of nearly getting Richter killed.
Today's update is a bit shorter, but I should be able to post the full new chapter next week.
