Poems by Blue - 2. To My Son Who Will Never Be

To My Son Who Will Never Be

I dreamt of you today, you know
and the night before as well
You charmed the birds down from the trees
You smiled the sun up into the sky

We laughed about stuff that never was
We played we were people who never were
We sang songs about loves that were and will be
We hid treasures that only our eyes could see

I told stories of times when I worshiped the wind
And chased it across the cerulean sky
When sunlight caressed my mahogany skin
When I took pride about my coal colored eyes

And through it all, you listened well
With a smile and song floating in the breeze
You pictured the places that I went to then
You played games with people that I knew back when

And then my son, you ran away free
Faster than anyone who was or will be
You were my darling son, terror of your school
You argued and fought like I taught you to

I woke from this dream with a smile born from you
Then sadness ripped my heart in two
For this is as close as I'll get to see
My son, the one who never will be
