Idea Overload

I've been doing a lot of edting lately and one of the things that I have noticed is that every time I am eyeballs deep in editing a story I have all these new story ideas creeping up on me in the dark. Sometimes they attack. They can attach themselves iike leeches to my soul until i pay them attention or they can dig under my skin like ticks and suck away at my motivation until they are bloated and I am numb...

Either way they have to be dealt with.

Typically I write these 'problem child' ideas down and put them into an 'ideas' folder where sometimes they moulder into obliviation and sometimes they attack again... and again... and again...

it's the nasty buggers I have to watch out for.

So what does this have to do with today?

I have this one idea that is pushing its way to the forefront a little too often, however I don't really like it. It won't go away. It plagues my dreams at night and when I get stuck in a story (writing) it pops up like a zit on prom night. Its showed up in a couple disguises too, various characters, various situations, but once I start to put it into the idea file I recognize it for the idea it is. It's like my muse is stuck on repeat.

I was editing today and there it was again -- annoying little shit. So, has this ever happened to you? and if it has... how did you exorcise the demon?

I've definitely had that happen, but I have yet to find a way to get rid of the idea or keep it from annoying me. Unless of course I put whatever I'm working with on hold, but that isn't always an option either. Wish I had something more to tell you! Hugs!!!

The only thing I can think of is to start writing it . . . there's probably a decent chance you'd hit a wall in this problem-idea story which would then free up your mind for your current work. And if you don't hit a wall, then hey, you'll have completed a new story :P

If something starts to take over my control, I just put what I was working on aside and let the bugger come out. Write it, sketch it or whatever. Usually it is far more interesting from what I was originally doing (at least if looked short-sightedly).

Don't fight against it... You'll lose.

I'm exactly the same as Maria. I have to put what I'm working on aside and pay it attention. It drives me crazy until i do. However, that's why i have so many unfinished stories which is a trade off I guess

Sighs the problem is I'm on a DEADLINE. One that I can't mess with. When I was on the deadline for the Anthology this happened twice and I did finally break down and at lease write the starts of the story down with the outlines for the middles. They don't have names yet really... but I have two that I can write on, if I choose to do so. Now this one is being an annoying little shit. I have two days to finish the edits on this story and then about two weeks to take 12400 words to about 20000 words INCLUDING the edits. I don't have TIME for this. I can see me writing this at 3 am. I can see it happening. I really can.

I may be new in writing but for me, I will think of another idea that might connect with that plague of an idea and see if it will work throughout the story. If it will never be, then I will make another story, which is totally frustrating and makes the previous one neglected.

thanks guys, I decided to just outline it and shove it in the story ideas folder. Lets see how long it stays there.
