    Author Interviews
Hey All!!!  Hope everyone is doing well. So, this week we're going to start one of our new features. Don't worry, I haven't forgotten the Author Guess Who, but we'll start that one after the new year (new year, new feature!). This week, we're going to take a look at the Q & A questions I asked. These features are for Authors, Readers, and Editors, so something for everyone!  Let's take a look at the questions and answers.

Authors: Have you experienced writer's block? If so, what helped you get past it?

@Mikiesboy - Yeah I"ve experienced it. What to do? After moaning and whining?  Just try to wait it out. Keep reading, do some editing. Try to write a prompt response. But mostly listen to those who know me best. Who say, you will write again. They have always been right.

@CassieQ - Yes, many times and there are usually three solutions I found that worked for me.

First one, is leave the current project and work on something else, if you can.  If you are a one story at a time type of person, maybe try a prompt or some free writing.  Then come back to where you were stuck.  Usually giving a difficult  to write scene some time and space, then coming back to it helps get unstuck.

Secondly, skip the scene and write something else in the story.  Usually jumping ahead will help.  Sometimes, it will even help me see what needs to happen in the previous scene, which will resolve the block.

Thirdly, try to take a good hard look at what is keeping you from writing.  This is my least favorite, but if I absolutely cannot get past a point and nothing else helps, then I am usually doing something wrong.  If I’m bored with the scene, I need to spice it up.  If I can’t get a character to act a certain way, then it is probably not in his character to act that way, and I’ll have to find a way around it.  My worst writer’s block was somewhere in the NTS series, when I was trying to get one of my characters, Jordan, to act extremely out of character and it just wasn’t working and I couldn’t get past it.  I ended up going back and cutting thousands of words out, which really sucked, but once I did that and let Jordan act like Jordan, the words came again.

Readers: When reading, what is one thing that will make you stop reading a story?

@blake_logan - When something happens in a story that makes it impossible to continue suspending disbelief I stop reading.  For example, one thing I can't get past is zombies.  I don't have a problem reading about vampires, sorcerers, shape-shifters, etc., but as soon as a zombie shuffles into a scene, I find another story.  Inappropriate use of computer jargon is another example of something that can be enough of a disconnect to cause me to stop reading (you can't back-trace an IP address from a damaged SIM card in a burner phone to locate someone).

A close second is when the narrator of a story starts describing themselves in the first couple of paragraphs of a story.  "But first, I should probably tell you about myself..." is the kiss of death.

@Thorn Wilde - A story that is poorly written. I mean grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. The odd typo is fine, it happens, it can get past editors and beta readers. But if I feel like a writer just couldn't be bothered to check their work to create a good product for their readers, then I probably won't bother reading it.

@Timothy M. - Mouthwash. I hate mouthwash because it's a commercial scam based on the hoax of halitosis. I first heard about the latter in the British QI program with Stephen Fry. He said halitosis is a fictional problem invented by Listerine who was the first company to sell mouthwash. Every time anyone writes a story where using mouthwash is promoted as a good hygiene thing, they are buying into this lie and perpetuating it.

from an Australian Dental Journal paper from 2008:
"Whilst many of these products [mouthwash] may have been shown to be effective in penetrating oral microbial biofilms in vitro and reducing oral bacterial load, it would be wise to restrict their use to short-term therapeutic situations if needed. ...
There may well be a reason for the use of alcohol-containing mouthrinses, but only for a particular situation and for a limited and controlled period of time. ...
mouthwash use should be restricted to adults for short durations and specific, clearly defined reasons."

Bad breath is best 'cured' by good dental hygiene, cutting down on food giving you smelly breath, brushing your teeth and tongue. Mints or sugar free chewing gum can help momentarily and certainly taste nicer - or so I'm told by the few people I've talked to since I haven't tried mouthwash.

@mollyhousemouse - my biggest turn offs are grammar, and word usage.

there are just too many opportunities to have an editor, or beta reader give your story the once over.  i understand that we have many fine authors for whom English isn't their first language, and that's OK, great in fact!  what better way to become familiar with the language, it's idioms, and idiosyncrasies than to write short stories.  but please, check your ego, and ask someone to look it over.

Editors: What would be your number one tip that authors should do BEFORE sending their story to their editor?

@Timothy M. - If you have a blind spot for a specific error which your editor has pointed out several times in previous chapters / stories, then you'll probably lessen his or her irritation if you check your text for this before sending it.

@Thorn Wilde - Don't send your first draft. Check your work to the best of your ability, and send it to your editor when you feel you have done everything you can do on your own. This not only makes the job a bit easier for the editor, but it helps you become a better writer as well.

Want to keep this feature going? Check out the Round 2 questions!  I've only received a couple of responses to the questions (mostly the Author question). Make sure to get your answers in before December 5th! I look forward to hearing from you!

    Prompts
Sorry all, I completely spaced the prompts this morning. So without further ado, here they are!

    Prompt 720 – Creative
    Tag – Family Dinner
Everyone has taken turns holding a family dinner, except you. Unfortunately, your luck has run out and everyone is coming to your house not only for dinner, but for the holiday dinner. What do you do?

    Prompt 721 – Creative
    Tag – List of words
Use the following in a story – a turkey, a balloon, a green coat, a shattered lamp, and a water bottle.

Feel free to share your last week's prompt responses in the comments!

    Prompts
Geez, I must be losing my touch as once again I just about forgot about the blog!  So, before I head off to bed, here are this weeks prompts. Hopefully they spark some ideas for you!

    Prompt 718 – Creative
    Tag – Embarrassing Interview
You finally have the interview of your dreams. Before it begins you rush to the bathroom, take care of business, wash up, and barely walk back into the waiting room when your name is called. As you head into the interview you hear the other three applicants begin to laugh. Part way through your interview you glace down only to see a long piece of toilet paper stuck to your shoe. As you blush in mortification you look down only to see your fly isn’t completely closed either. What happens with the rest of your interview?

    Prompt 719 – Creative
    Tag – First Line
“Your turn is coming and then we will see!”

Did you write a prompt last week? Share a link in the comments!

    Author Interviews
Well, hello there. Nice of you to come see exactly what a blog info dump entails!  Hopefully you'll find it quite informative. I've got a few things to cover, so let's get right into it!

First off, thank you to everyone who voted in the anthology poll. There were a total of 42 votes, and spacing out the anthology stories was the clear winner with half the total votes (21). The other half was divided between posting all at once (6), and didn't care either way (15). We'll be giving this way of posting a shot with this upcoming anthology. Now, when am I going to start posting all these stories you ask? Well, you'll just have to wait and see!

Speaking of the anthology, don't forget that the deadline is tomorrow!!! Yep, that's right, it's here and you only have another day to get your stories sent to @Valkyrie for her to pair you up with a member of the proof team. Once you receive your stories back, you'll need to fix anything that needs fixing and get it uploaded to GA stories pronto!  From what I'm seeing, we're going to have a great group of stories.

Next up on today's agenda, blog features!  Yep, that's right!  Have you checked out the new features that I'm offering in the GA Blog? First up, we have the Guess the Author feature. I've already got some great content from our site authors, and this feature will start at the beginning of the year. New year, new feature, great idea, huh?  If you're an author that wants to participate, just PM me and I'll send you all the info! If you've already done that, then you just need to get those answers in to me (if you haven't already done so) and then sit back and wait for your turn to come up. Won't it be fun to sit and watch people trying to guess that it's you, and guess wrong?

Another new feature, is the Q & A feature!  We have three different ones. One each for Authors, Editors, and Readers!  No matter what category you fall into, there's something for you. The first Q & A questions are expired for new responses, but there's a new one. Go check it out and get those next answers to me by December 5th!

Let's see, anything else I need to cover? I think that's about it, but I'll also drop this little tid-bit, in case you missed it.  @Cia has a new newsletter game planned for all y'all, which she'll unveil sometime after the anthology deadline is past. I know what it is, and I won't spoil the surprise, but I will tell you this much....It's a doozy of a challenge and I can't wait to see who undertakes it!

Well, that's it for today!  Have a great day and don't forget to join in on all the various opportunities. I look forward to hearing from you!

Who's ready for another story review? You're in luck then, as Puppilull has prepared one for lomax61's Twelve Gays of Christmas!  Before we get to the review though, we would really like if a member of the community would be willing to provide a review for the December slot. The review team is working on a special treat for everyone and if someone could sign up, that would be awesome!  If you're interested in getting one of your favorite stories some attention, send a message to @Timothy M.  Now, onto the review!

I can’t believe it! It’s that time of year already. The holiday season, where all shall twinkle along with the tinsel and stars, all happy and cozy, fa-la-laing in joyous harmony as fluffy snowflakes gently blanket the world outside.

Except not all Christmases live up to those standards. When your husband has left you, for a woman no less, your circle of friends is falling apart and nothing seems to be going the way you planned – what do you do? You get on with it, of course! What else?

Trevor is not about to let a deserting husband, friends away in far off places, breakup of his best friend, and death of another dear friend stop him from celebrating Christmas as they have been for the past years. The plans will go ahead or he’ll be forced to admit defeat. And he is not defeated.

Sticking to their plans, the remaining gang with a few add-ons departs to a remote location in Scotland for the holidays. Off they go, this motley crew of old friends, new acquaintances taking the places of others, among them Trevor’s ex and Mary, the new woman. Yes, his rival will be joining them for the celebrations. Does this sound like an excellent idea? No, I didn’t think so either…
Of course, there are arguments already from the get go, when Mary turns out to be a bit demanding to put it mildly. But in the midst of all the drama, the son of the landlord shows up. Enter the delicious Rudy. Trevor is instantly smitten, but what will Rudy think? And what is lurking in his not so distant past?

Twelve Gays of Christmas is a fun but heartfelt read. You get the Christmas feel and also the romance to warm your cold evenings. The characters are well written, both the ones you root for and the ones you mostly want to hit over the head with a snow shovel. I found the villains also have some redeeming traits, even if I was pretty much alone in feeling sympathy for the Supervillain of the story (read to see who that is…). This keeps them from being cardboard cut outs and instead are people you can somehow understand.

Most of all it’s a nice read, perfect for an evening in with some tea, a warm blanket and a crackling fire. It will set you in the right mood for Christmas. And perhaps add a slight longing for just a little more romance and drama in your own life…

So unwrap this story as your own special Christmas treat. You are worth it!

    Weekly Wrap Up
Hi, hi, y'all! For those that missed Wednesday's post, I'm back!!!! Not even a week back, and I already almost forgot a blog post, and then just as I was about done, the server was down. Luckily it came back up and I was able to post! I'm out of practice. After today though, @wildone will continue to do the weekly wrap up for a little while longer while I get settled back into the saddle.

Speaking of the server, the size of some threads are negatively impacting the memory on our dedicated server which, in turn, affects the site performance. As such, in the near future we will be archiving certain threads in the Forum Games and Humor and Chat. The threads will still be visible, but they will not be able to be added to or searched. New threads can be created to replace the ones that are being archived, but you won't be able to reply to the old threads. We trust you understand why this technical task is necessary. You can read @Myr's post here!

Before we get into the wrap up for the week, I have a reminder for everyone, as well as a couple of new things. Don't forget that your anthologies are due in to the proof team no later than November 15th!  Regarding the anthologies, we're contemplating a new posting schedule for the anthologies to give the anthology a lot more exposure. I have a poll up, but it's not going to be up very long and will close this Friday. Make sure to get your vote in, by visiting the forum thread. There's also a couple of new blog opportunities, not just for authors, but for editors and readers too!  First off, if you're an author you can join in on Guess the Author!  If you are an author, an editor, or a reader, make sure to check out the other upcoming blog opportunities. We also have our themes for next year, which was announced on Wednesday, but they are:

    2019 Spring Anthology
    Due: May 15, 2019
    In the Stars
    Snapped

    2019 Fall Anthology
    Due: November 15, 2019
    Fall From Grace
    Raincheck

As you can see, I've been busy coming up with new ideas. If you have an idea for a blog feature, I'd love to hear it. I can't guarantee I can use all of them, but I'm always looking for new content for the blog. Now, on to the wrap up!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!!  Hello, Hello!!!!  Long time no talk to!  My little guy is doing well (and sleeping through the night, YAY!) and I thought perhaps it was time I returned to my site duties. A huge thank you to all the admins and other team members for taking care of the blogs and blog content while I tended to Baby J and took care of some health issues. @wildone has agreed to continue helping with the Weekly Wrap Up blogs while I get back into the swing of things. I hope everyone is doing well. Now, let's see what I have in store for you on this spooky holiday!!!

Now that you have some Halloween stories to read, how about some other Halloween fun?  Halloween Sudoku anyone? Maybe a Halloween Crossword? The solutions are hidden in the spoiler!

    Halloween Sudoku

Each box, row, and column must contain only one letter of "Halloween". Since there are two "L" and two "E" each will contain one uppercase "L" and "E" and one lowercase "l" and "e".

    Kissing the Dragon

    by

    lomax

    Author

    Reviewer: Timothy M
    Status: Complete
    Word Count: 145,912

Lomax is a fairly new author at GA, and I got acquainted with him while reading his first story Uninvited Guest, which is no longer here due to it being snapped up for publishing. However, Lomax has started a series called The Croxburg Chronicles, the first of which is Kissing the Dragon, a thriller / romance.

There are several reasons to read this story, and one of them is of course the murder mystery itself. As the story unfolded, readers speculated about whodunit, both in reviews and in the story discussion forum. There were several wild theories, but none of them got close. Lomax sprinkled various hints, and some of the bad guys were obvious, but he still surprised us in the end.

An even better reason is the way lomax portrays his characters. They are never one-dimensional, but very quickly seem real, with all their annoying habits, endearing quirks, and understandable doubts or wants. We go from feeling sorry, to disliking, to laughing, before we end up admiring or even loving some of the protagonists. It’s a bit of an emotional rollercoaster at times, and I think I wasn’t the only reader who wanted to shake or slap the main character, Colin, as well as one or two of the others.

To quote from one of my reviews: Why do all your characters annoy me so much?

But luckily Kissing the Dragon also has plenty of funny, scary, hot, sad, and painfully honest moments. Perhaps best of all: Colin manages to think about and revise his decisions and perceptions of his ex-partner, his past, his life, his job and his friends. He is confronted with his own faults and misconceptions and realizes he needs to change something. But whether he is capable of this and how the story ends, you’ll have to find out for yourself. Oh and this also applies to the significance of the title, which isn’t revealed until we’re more than half way through the story.

Give Kissing the Dragon a chance – and remember: You’re lucky because you don’t have to wait anxiously for the next chapter to post.

Hope everyone has had a great week so far. It's time for this weeks writing prompts. If you're stuck, or you're considering writing for the first time, these might be perfect for you. Don't forget that stories under 1,000 words must be posted as part of a collection.

    Prompt 674 – Creative
    Tag – First Line
“What do you mean, I’m the father?”

    Prompt 675 – Creative
    Tag – First Date
You set up a romantic first date, but your date recently was in an accident and their leg is still in a cast. What is the date like?

Don't forget to share your prompt responses from last week!

I'm fired. I completely spaced posting the responses to "Renee's Writing Challenge" on the 1st. It looks like the only one to take up the challenge, was Puppilull.

Thanks for taking the challenge, @Puppilull. What was your experience like when writing the two short stories? Was it easier than you thought? More difficult?
  11. Renee Stevens
Before we even get started with the wrap up, I want to say:

    Graeme!!!!!!

Graeme has been a long time member of GA's staff, and has been promoted to Site Administrator as well as Author Promotion Team Leader. We are very happy to have him as part of our team, so please visit the announcement thread to congratulate Graeme on his well deserved promotion!

Now, for some other news. I don't usually use the staff blogs for personal stuff, but the time has come for me to say farewell, for a while at least. Baby J is due in just a few short weeks and, for the next few months, I will be focusing on him and my family. I will be back, but for the time being, the other Admins have graciously agreed to take over my site duties. That's not to say you'll never see me in the online user list, but this will be my last blog post for a while (other than the prompts this Friday which are already scheduled). @wildone will be doing the Weekly Wrap Up for me, while the other Admins will handle the various other blog posts. If you have any questions, please direct them to one of them, otherwise you might be waiting a rather long time for a reply. If you wish to send content in for a blog post, including Improve & Encourage features (which we're currently out of), please send them to one of the other Admins and they'll make sure it gets to the right person for inclusion in the blog. Anything author promotion related, should now be directed to @Graeme.

@Cia has agreed to field any anthology related questions. In case I don't see you for a while, I hope y'all have an awesome summer!!!!! I'm sure mine will be plenty busy .

Now, let's see what happened this week, and if you haven't already checked out the anthologies, please do so!  Please note: The blog opportunities are temporarily shortened, due to the majority of them requiring info from me.

    How the Light Gets In
    Duncan Ryder

Time, it is said, heals all wounds. The single, deep ones. The thousand cuts. But sometimes, sometimes, the scars left behind are just as debilitating. Can two wounded young men find the path that reaches out beyond their own scars to find each other?

Don't forget.... Read, Write, and REVIEW!!!

  12. Renee Stevens
I hope you all enjoyed the last Improve & Encourage feature, because it's time for another one. These features are meant to both provide feedback to authors and, similar to story reviews, point out stories that readers might not otherwise have found. It's similar to a review, in that the person doing the critique tells you what they liked about the story, but it differs in that they also provide constructive criticism. Each author signed up to participate, and sign up's are still open!  These will post once a month until the last author signed up is critiqued. If you'd like to provide a critique for the blog, sign up in the thread. Just remember, by signing up, you are also volunteering to have your story critiqued and featured. I'm currently out of these critiques, so if you've already signed up, and haven't yet provided your critique, please get them in as soon as possible. As I will be gone for a while, for the time being, please include @TalonRider and @Cia in the PM.

Please give us a short summary of the story you chose.
Beau left his hometown of Lafayette to brave the colds of Ohio only to have to deal with bad Southern accents, jealousy, stage fright and his handsome and charismatic coworker George.
What do you see as the strengths of the story/poem?
This was delightful to read.  There is a fantastic subtle humor in it that I wasn't expecting, from Beau's opinion of the Ohio winters, to his coworkers ridiculous Southern accents.  Beau's emotions were so vivid; I could feel the way he seethed with jealousy over Harold, the paralyzing trepidation of being on stage and the sexy undercurrent of all the scenes where he interacted with George.
What do you see as the weaknesses of the story/poem?
This was extremely well done, but the ending felt a bit abrupt.  It was a sweet and delightful conclusion, but it didn't appear to match the pacing of the rest of the story and therefore came off as rushed and a bit jarring.
How do you think the story/poem could be improved?
A little bit more resolution near the end.  It was a lovely conclusion to the story, but after all the build-up to it, I would have liked to see just a little bit more.  (Also, I was a little bummed because I liked reading about these characters so much).
    What was your favorite part?
I liked the scene where George brought in some Vietnamese shrimp fried rice for Beau.  It showed that George was thinking of Beau when he was out to lunch and knew him well enough to know that he liked the rice and would be hungry.  It was very sweet and thoughtful.
And this line:  " Something definitely pinged, and it wasn't just my brain."  Nuff said.

    Weekly Wrap Up
I hope you all have had a great week this week!  Have you had a chance to check out the Spring Anthology yet? Nine brand new stories for you to sink your teeth into. Before we get started this week, a couple of reminders for you:

Reminder #1: New authors are automatically put into the moderation queue and have to be approved by staff. Please read the FAQ on posting stories prior to uploading your first story. One common mistake new authors to the site make is uploading multiple chapters, if not all, of their story at once. We ask that you please not do this as only one chapter a day will be approved, providing the story meets site quidelines. In the end, it may even make more work for the author if changes are necessary before the chapter can be approved. Once out of the moderation queue, authors can post up to two chapters a day, but those chapters must be spaced at least eight hours apart so as not to flood the story update list.

Reminder #2: There are certain perks to being a promoted author here at GA. One of those perks is having your weekly story updates in the Weekly Wrap Up. Please, if you are not a promoted author, refrain from posting your story updates in the comments of the Weekly Wrap Up. We are happy to help you showcase your work in the various GA blogs, all you have to do is sign up for one of the many opportunities that we offer. These can be found in the “Blog Opportunities” section of each Weekly Wrap Up. Otherwise, you are welcome to use status updates, a forum thread (one per story), or even a personal blog to notify readers of updates.

You can't please everyone, and sometimes, you just have to settle for pleasing yourself. Matt is forced to accept this when he has to defend the life he realized he doesn't want to live without. The life that has been so carefully laid out for him for the last 17 years is changing, and Matt decides that it must be changing for the better if it includes Jacob, even if along with Jacob comes some hard decisions and some fights he didn't know he was quite ready to fight.

Well, it's the start of a new week, and for today's schedule, we're bringing you BlindAmbition's review of Button by Cole Matthews. Featured story days are a great way to highlight one of the many stories that can be found in GA Stories. With so many stories, it's easy for a single story to get lost in the shuffle. Now, onto the review. Hopefully you enjoy BlindAmbition's review enough to go check out Button for yourself!

I’m happy to be providing my first official GA story review. There are so many wonderful stories on GA, so it was hard to choose one. I decided on highlighting the story Button by Cole Matthews. It’s a little gem that flies below the radar. The story is full of heart and meaning, without being preachy. It offers a little something for everyone. I read this story before joining GA, and it still resonates with me.

The story revolves around a full cast of characters, but it’s truly Button’s story. He is left on the doorstep of his father Craig’s house. Craig and his partner Graham take on the Herculean task of raising Button. Each chapter represents another year in their lives. Craig is the buddy and most relatable figure to Button, whereas Graham is the overprotective nurturer. Each father plays an invaluable part in what Button will become.

Button will experience hardship through his learning disability. He will also learn to achieve and overcome adversity. Button gains confidence through an abundance of love. Learning how to deal with the curves life throws at you can be difficult, but it’s what you make of any situation that counts.

Cole has written a story with a lot of heart. It’s not fluffy and sugarcoated. It’s also not depressing and a Debbie Downer. Button is just an honest portrayal of life, life that isn’t certain and often changing. The story's strengths come from  showing people are flawed, constantly evolving and resilient. These are all things we inevitably learn in the game of life.

The only criticism I have of the story is wanting more. Each chapter represents a year; this limits how much of Button’s life can be included in those chapters, although I  feel writing in another format would have taken away from the story’s special quality and voice.

I was sitting here the other day, trying to come up with some new blog ideas when the idea for this blog popped into my head. There may be future challenges, but we'll start with this one.

Renee's Writing Challenge #1: Different Choices
Have you ever wondered what would happen if your character made a different choice? Wondered how it would affect the overall story and whether or not your story would end the same?  Now is your chance to find out. The challenge is to write two short stories (they can be flash fiction). Same characters. Same beginning. The catch is, that there must be a "turning point" in the first story near the beginning. For the second story, when you reach that turning point, the character must make a different choice. Some examples could be:

    Example 1
Story 1: Character starts out having a horrible day at work and things have been going downhill for a while. He's ready to quit when he's offered a promotion. The promotion will mean even more work, longer hours, is more stressful, and it comes with minimal pay raise. Your character chooses to take the promotion.
Story 2: Same beginning, but when the character is offered the promotion he asks for time to decide. In the end, he decides that the promotion is not worth continuing to put up with everything going on at work. He declines the promotion, and instead turns in his resignation.

    Example 2
Story 1: Dave is single, and hasn't been having much luck with dating. He's ready to give up. Then Dave gets a phone call or a visit from his friend, Mark. Mark wants Dave to go on a double date with him. Mark's girlfriend's brother, John, is in town and the girlfriend asked the friend to find someone to go with them to dinner as John's date. Marc assures Dave that everything he knows about John makes him believe that John could be a great match for Dave. Dave hate's blind dates, but Mark tells him that the date will be completely on him, and Dave agrees to go despite his reservations.
Story 2: Same beginning, but Dave can't get over his hatred for blind dates. He doesn't care who's paying, he doesn't feel like sitting through what he figures will be an uncomfortable dinner. He tells Mark that he'll have to find someone else.

How does making a different choice affect the rest of the story? Can the 2nd story reach the same conclusion as the first one with such wildly different choices? If your goal is to reach the same conclusion, what other changes did you have to make to get there?  Keep these thoughts in mind. Post your challenges as a single story, with separate chapters, and then share the link in the thread, no later than May 13th. On May 16th, I'll post all the stories in a blog post for discussion on your experience with the challenge.

“After this, I never want to see you again.”

    Prompt 671 - Challenge
    Tag – Historical Fiction
Authors like to write in a genre that they are comfortable with. Some genres require more work than others. Your challenge is to write a scene or story that is set in a particular time period. Think Victorian, Elizabethan, World War I, Colonial America, or another time period. You’ll need to research the clothes, tools, items, attitudes, and language so everything is appropriate. Good Luck.

Hope everyone has had a great week!  I have a couple reminders and an announcement, so let's get right into it!!!

Announcement: Keep an eye on your email! Due to the pending GDPR legislation the EU has hit everyone with, GA has to send out a new sign-up form that must be filled out if you wish to continue to get the site newsletter. ALL members who do not fill this out will be unsubscribed based on the legislation that we have no choice but to follow. There will be several reminders and opportunities to sign back up, but we want to warn everyone ahead of time that it's coming just so you're not surprised.

Reminder #1:  Anthology entries are due in to the proof team no later than May 15th!  Time is running out, so get your story sent into Valkyrie as soon as possible!

Reminder #2: @Carlos Hazday is looking for questions for the Ask An Author blog!  Without your questions, he can't keep the feature going, so make sure to send in your questions for your favorite authors. Right now he's especially looking for questions for an Admin & Moderator edition, so if you have a question for an author who just happens to be an Admin or Moderator, make sure to get those to him ASAP!  Admin's and Moderators that have stories on site include: Myr, Cia, A.J., wildone, Renee Stevens, & Graeme. I believe Carlos already has a question for Cia.

I think that's all the announcements and reminders, though I feel like I'm forgetting something. Hopefully not! Now, lets take a look at what happened in the various GA Blogs this week.

Before we get started this beautiful Monday morning (at least here), I wanted to give a quick Thank You to @wildone for handling the wrap up for me. It was greatly appreciated!  Now, let's take a look at what the review team has for us this week. Today we're featuring Boy Story: The Road Taken by Rip Skor. Thank you to Puppilull for this review!

As I sat down to write this review, I thought about how to describe the story and not put people off from reading it. You see, Boy Story isn’t a tale of extravagant action, heartbreaking drama or romance so fluffy you need wool cutters to get through it. No, this is a story about the lives of two boys and to be honest, they lead pretty ordinary lives. They work, go to school, do sports, hang out… So why read it? I would say just for that reason. I have rarely read a story that manages to be so close to a documentary and still have me longing for the next chapter.

So, who are the boys? Our main characters are Matt, who defines himself as straight, and Parker, who isn't shy about where his appetites lie. The attraction when their paths cross is so strong Matt can’t help but give gay sex a try. After that, he doesn’t really go back, and we get to follow the boys through those formative years at the end of high school and then through college.

The lack of drama is never a drawback, but instead, for me, it's the main selling point of this story. The writer’s 'slice of life' approach works so well, and I enjoyed reading about quite normal people with quite normal issues and struggles.

Also, as a woman who for some unknown reason likes to write about men having sex (hint: HOTNESS!), this story has taught me a thing or two about the male anatomy, by being just as honest when it comes to describing sex—and the effects thereof—in a very open manner. The way guys react to relationships and life in general also gave me food for thought, even if I did disagree at times with our protagonists. My rants in the chapter comments are only testament to how close I felt to these guys and how real they were to me. To see their love story unfold before me was such a treat.
