    Chapter 9

The next few weeks were busy. Incredibly so. They had puppies to raise, a house to secure, a long trip to plan, and re-plan and re-plan again. Too many possible contingencies kept popping up. Ideas and worries and what-ifs. Then they had more gear for all the what-ifs than would fit. Twice as much. So they had to look at everything again. Everything needed to be absolutely necessary if it was to be packed. And for two or more uses if possible. Otherwise it needed to be left behind. Several trips

    Chapter 8

Yup, those were exactly what Joel was thinking. Dogs are great for sounding the alert and for protection. More to come...

    Chapter 8

“We need to get a dog.” Craig's head snapped up from the mess of electronics he was working on. “Uh, no we don't. Why would we want that?” Joel shook his head at him. “C'mon Craig. Look at your leg. If I didn't run up when I did, who knows what would've happened. That cougar could've killed you. A dog would help a lot for protection. Actually, I was thinking two dogs.” Craig rubbed the bandage on his leg lightly. “Aww, that cougar was small. I think I would've got him after another minute.

    Chapter 7

Yup, I agree, and just said as much in reply to Parker. Who knows what kind of adversaries our duo will face?
  5. Gee Whillickers

    Chapter 7

Yes, often the most dangerous animals of all are other humans.

    Chapter 7

...Water, ammunition, food—sealed up as best as possible to keep the smell down—first aid supplies, tool box, extra gas, clothing. Craig ran through his checklist without thinking. It had become second nature. Any trip further than walking distance required it. Joel had almost exactly the same list, so working together it didn't take long, and then they were ready to go. They climbed into the cab of Craig's commandeered four wheel drive truck. He had learned early on that this was the most versa

    Chapter 6

Thanks. Receivers aren't hard to come by, but yeah, Radio Shacks are. As for higher end equipment, that more specialty suppliers these days. More to come soon!

    Chapter 6

Yes, they have their work cut out for them now trying to find other people.
  9. Gee Whillickers

    Chapter 6

Craig grabbed a couple of candy bars he'd been saving from the kitchen and brought them upstairs to Joel. He entered the room and grinned at Joel as he tossed one of the candy bars to him, who caught it easily. Joel was sitting on the bed now, looking through a family photo album that Craig had brought up to his room a few weeks ago from downstairs. “You're looking in a better mood. Must've been a good 'alone time', huh?” grinned Joel at Craig, his eyebrows waggling. Craig blushed. Hard. “

Thanks for the comments. Yup, lots of possibilities to explore. Let's see what the boys decide to do about their predicament. And what they find out...

    Chapter 5

Craig and Joel were sitting in his house. In his room actually, the same bedroom he had been in since he and his mom moved here. He had found that he needed the familiarity, the connection to his old life, so he had never tried sleeping anywhere else. They had moved the dog carcasses well away from the food warehouse and closed it up again to keep the animals out, and drove over to Craig's house to eat something other than a twinkie. Joel sat down in Craig's desk chair. “Man, that was delici

    Chapter 4

Excellent questions, skinnydragon. All will eventually be revealed. Lots more to come!
  13. Gee Whillickers

    Chapter 1

Thanks, and yes there will be lots more, both over there and here. As for what happens with the boys, you'll find out a bit more real soon.

    Chapter 4

The boys stood staring at each other in the dim dry-foods warehouse, their guns still half raised. For a long moment neither was quite sure what to do next. Craig had learned how to deal with wild dogs, the coyotes that were increasingly wandering through town, and twice now more recently some very unhappy moose. He had learned to deal with complex machines, how to move heavy things single-handedly, and a really stunning amount of self-administered first-aid. He had learned how to find resourc

    Chapter 3

Thanks. Yup, poor Craig is only just beginning to understand what he's up against. And yup, lots more to follow.
  16. Gee Whillickers

    Chapter 3

Thanks skinnydragon! It might be just a wee bit longer for the next chapter. Got a busy day tomorrow and not much time to spend hashing it through again with my editor. We'll see though! Won't be long in any case.

    Chapter 2

Yup, just a little character and scene development before we get back where we started. Stay tuned for more!

    Chapter 1

Thanks Steven! I hope you enjoy it again, though I've made a few changes here and there. Hopefully for the better.

    Chapter 3

Eight months earlier, less a day.... Craig's eyes opened suddenly, his heart hammering fast. He looked at his clock. 4:08 AM. The room was still dark. He listened while trying to figure out what woke him so suddenly. All was quiet. Turning over, he decided it must have been a dream and closed his eyes once again, quickly falling back asleep. His clock radio awoke him several hours later, at 7:30 as usual. What wasn't usual was that instead of the usual music or morning bantering of the

    Chapter 2

Indeed. What lies ahead for poor Craig? We already know more than he does at the end of that chapter. Look for Chapter Three soonish...

    Chapter 1

Yup, lots more to come. Chapter Two is up now, and lots more to follow.
  22. Gee Whillickers

    Chapter 2

Eight months earlier... Craig made a sound something like, "Ooooff." But not quite. The sound you make immediately after being punched in the stomach when you aren't ready for it. Only he hadn't been punched. It was just a basketball. It hadn't even been on purpose. At least it didn't look that way. Craig had just finished snapping his lock shut and turning away from his locker when he was hit by the ball. At least he didn't drop his backpack from his shoulder. That would've looked patheti

    Chapter 1

Hahah! Nope, not a Halloween story, although I suppose it could have been. Chapter two up soon....
  24. Gee Whillickers

    Chapter 1

Craig looked down at the dog. The dog's look of bewilderment faded with its last breath and it lay still. Craig re-holstered his pistol and turned away pretending to feel nothing. No. He wasn't that far gone. Not yet. He stopped and looked again. Amazingly, after all this time, the dog had the dirty remains of a red nylon collar around his neck. Once he was loved. Once he probably loved his owner, his family. Now, like Craig, he had just been trying to survive. Craig's eyes widened sli
