The next few weeks were busy. Incredibly so. They had puppies to raise, a house to secure, a long trip to plan, and re-plan and re-plan again. Too many possible contingencies kept popping up. Ideas and worries and what-ifs. Then they had more gear for all the what-ifs than would fit. Twice as much. So they had to look at everything again. Everything needed to be absolutely necessary if it was to be packed. And for two or more uses if possible. Otherwise it needed to be left behind. Several trips

“We need to get a dog.” Craig's head snapped up from the mess of electronics he was working on. “Uh, no we don't. Why would we want that?” Joel shook his head at him. “C'mon Craig. Look at your leg. If I didn't run up when I did, who knows what would've happened. That cougar could've killed you. A dog would help a lot for protection. Craig grabbed a couple of candy bars he'd been saving from the kitchen and brought them upstairs to Joel. He entered the room and grinned at Joel as he tossed one of the candy bars to him, who caught it easily. Joel was sitting on the bed now, looking through a family photo album that Craig had brought up to his room a few weeks ago from downstairs. “You're looking in a better mood. Craig and Joel were sitting in his house. In his room actually, the same bedroom he had been in since he and his mom moved here. He had found that he needed the familiarity, the connection to his old life, so he had never tried sleeping anywhere else. The boys stood staring at each other in the dim dry-foods warehouse, their guns still half raised. For a long moment neither was quite sure what to do next. Eight months earlier, less a day.... Craig's eyes opened suddenly, his heart hammering fast. He looked at his clock. 4:08 AM. The room was still dark. Eight months earlier... Craig made a sound something like, "Ooooff." But not quite. The sound you make immediately after being punched in the stomach when you aren't ready for it.
