An excellent first chapter. Your main character drew me in right away, as did the premise. I'm looking forward to reading more of this one.

They arrived at the lab and made their way down to the superposition room. Without power in the facility it was a bit more difficult, especially with Andrew's wound slowing him down. It was slow and the use of flashlights was obviously necessary once below ground. It had occurred to Craig that they were actually in the superposition field as soon as they arrived in the parking lot, but then he realized that it would likely be much easier and faster to already be in the room when they translate

Music. They all heard it at the same moment. Music was playing. It was coming from the open door to an office about halfway down the hallway branching off from the lobby. They all froze and looked at each other. Craig started moving first, followed by the other three boys. Craig was sure it must be Dr. Cornish. He hoped that he would help them. Yup, that was the easy part, so far.

Finding an appropriate vehicle turned out to be more of a challenge than they had anticipated. This was a small town airport. The disappearance happened in the middle of the night. There were a few vehicles available in the vicinity but keys needed to be located for them. They ended up leaving some of the gear in the plane and loading some of the essentials into a minivan and a Honda Civic, the only vehicles that both started easily and for which keys could be found. It took a week and three days. A full ten days of their precious and dwindling time. But there was so much to do. Joel and Jamie practiced their shooting, then a discussion led to the inclusion of a few select more powerful weapons, just in case, and all four needed practice with these, both shooting and field maintenance. Dr. Pollack sat in one of the uncomfortable desk chairs near the far edge of the room. Andrew was sitting his lap, looking much more like a scared nine year old than a fourteen year old boy. His arms were around his dad's shoulders and tears continued to slowly streak down his face. Dr. Pollack's arms were around his son. Nobody was eating stale cookies anymore. Jamie and Joel had moved to a corner of the table and were talking quietly. The usually outgoing, sarcastic, glib Jamie looking anything but. Joel had a hand on Jamie's shoulder and was talking quietly and insistently to him in a quiet voice. Andrew and Craig were sitting next to each other but not touching.
