    Chapter 1

Abschnitt 1 The different possible states were clearly defined in his thoughts. The transitions between them lucid. He tried to compile the table for the mapping function in order to replace the non-deterministic machine with a deterministic one. The gentle swaying of the carriage helped him concentrate. But concentrate was the wrong word; he was part of the system that he considered. There was no other world for him in this moment. The rain fell against the window next to him and the carriag

    Chapter 1

Chapter1 He sat in the seminar and looked at his essay. He knew he was doing badly. He'd received bad marks for most of the assignments he'd handed in, and they were getting worse. Every week he had had to submit a short essay on the period of history being dealt with in the lectures. To start with, the teacher of the seminar had written long notes in red ink across his work. In the course of the semester, the notes had got shorter and his marks had got worse. The teacher didn't seem to be ta

it's a bummer being forced to use a format which the rest of the world can only read if they send lots of money to microsoft a college has no business forcing students to use any particular software. it should instead require standardized formats (like txt, html, odt, ...). where's stallman when you need him?
  6. there's a thread about the difference between admitting that you're not straight and admitting that you're an atheist on richarddawkins.net/forum at the moment, in case anybody's interested. here it is: clickety
  7. if you want a new definition of pain, my boss decided recently we should all go ajaxy and web2.0ish on the company's internet presence. so i started programming. trying to support the official standards <b>and</b> ie6 almost killed me. i hope ie7 will be better, not that i'll ever touch it, but at least i won't have to jump through quite so many hoops. btw, if anyone's interested. i'm working on another two chapters for my story 'die rettung'. there's not a release date set yet, but watch this space howie
  8. actually i've started counting in hexadecimal. i'm now 20, and no longer 1F (sorry snowy, i mean of course 0x20)
  9. i wonder if some idiot could actually get a bill of that nature passed: no sex outside marriage. in some states it couldn't be that difficult. sometimes the growing fundamentalisation of the world scares me. the fundamentalist lobby is way too well organised.
  10. if i remember correctly, the problem is that apple doesn't release details for the connection between the bsd operating system and the aqua user interface, with the result that it's not as easy as i could be to write software for it, so basically, they're shooting themselves in the foot a bit there (of course, it still is a lot easier to write (or port) software for os x than it is to write software to do certain things in windows) celeron processors (or intel in general) is worth looking into, because intel is quite open to the linux community, which is the future of computing.

  12. as a geek i should really jump in here and say that sci-fi has nothing to do with magic. howie
  13. i think i'd be quite lonely, if i were you. i wonder how long you'll be happy with the situation. do you know any other glb people irl? howie
  14. poor rknapp, that doesn't sound happy i hope you get out of this situation soon. are you out to anybody irl? howie
  15. you're grounded? what did you do? i hope it was something you're thoroughly ashamed of
  16. what a rediculous web page for a company like channel 4. two proprietary technologies (java-script, shockwave-flash), which will soon be disabled in internet explorer (see http://developers.slashdot.org/article.pl?...6/03/29/1823233 ). and it's full of gif-pictures! did you know, that it is illegal to have pictures in gif-format on your computer if you cannot prove they were generated using 'official' software? and the jpeg format isn't safe either. although it is an official standard, it looks like someone's patented it. what would happen, if the patent holder said 'i want one dollar for every jpeg you have on your computer?' and believe me, it could happen. if the patent holder for 'embedding automatic media in webpages' (or something similar) can win 500 million from microsoft and force a major change in internet explorer, they can fine you for possessing jpegs. (there is an answer- png-format (Png is Not Gif) is an open standard.) but then patent law is really weird. in america, for example, kirchhoff's laws are patented. in australia, the wheel is patented. in america, there is a patent on sitting on a swing and swinging in a certain way. i appear to have got off topic. please ignore this post and go back to the rest of the thread... howie
  17. the trouble is, he used it with derogatory intent, calling something he didn't like 'gay'. i wonder what would happen if a sizeable proportion of society went around calling things they didn't like 'jewish' or 'black'.. "have you seen underworld evolution? it was just so jewish" food for thought howie
  18. i am. why do you equate being tolerant with being open-minded? i would say i (1) am extremely intolerant and (2) try to be very open-minded. when i see something that is wrong, then i fight against it. however before i fight against it, i ask myself why i find it to be wrong, if i am right in finding it wrong and if i have the problem and should change myself. 'being tolerant' aka 'putting up with' is a sign of moral bankruptcy. howie (edited due to automatic smilie)
  19. <br/>you know, there is a difference between calling something you find bad 'gay' and making fun of a religion.<br/>someone's sexuality is not a personal choice, religion (after a certain age) is. by using the word 'gay' negatively, one stigmatizes an immutable quality of a person. religious people can, and often do, change religions or stop completely. <br/>howie
  20. hi jesse_boi smile.gif i read the story and thought it was fun smile.gif when's the fifth chapter coming? or have you posted it somewhere else? i had to cut and paste the story because the colours in this forum were killing my eyes. maybe you could post it in efiction, just ask myr for an account. howie

oh, it's called semi-colon- 2thumbs- semi-colon and you call a java-script to insert it. i've often wondered what it is. oh hang on, there's a pannel full of smilies on my left... was that always there? i should really get more sleep and drink less coffee howie feeling blind. ps. hello twolf
  22. sorry, i like totally forgot that i'd posted this here the story can be found on this very site under eFiction --> original fiction --> college --> the_miracle_worker hope you like it howie
  23. hi i'm not sure this is worth a new topic, but i've just uploaded my first story (which i consider to be a very important moment in the history of at least my world). it's called 'the miracle worker' mainly because it was the first title i thought of. and it's written in english (my first attempt at creative writing in english since school). so if it's full of mistakes, could you tell me so i can correct it? one likes to learn happy reading! (don't worry, it's short) salut! howie

    formats

does IE still have occasional fits? the last time i used it was at university about 10 years ago and it seemed to crash quite regularly. until recently i had an xp installation on one of my computers to do networking stuff, until i replaced the old broken dvd-drive with a new one. now the xp partition doesn't boot. it says something about 'abgesicherter modus' and then stops. i tried fixing it through the linux partition but everything seems to be binary, so that doesn't work. and seeing as i've done a lot of work on this linux partition i don't want to try to reinstall xp. if anyone's interested, i also fired one of my bosses today for sending me work to translate in doc-format. i can understand private people using doc until they discover what it is, but a company has no business using this elitist format. i'm also working on an interesting story (in english this time). i'll upload it if i ever^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H as soon as it's finished howie

    Lets Talk!

well, my name's howie (which you've probably realised by now) i'm a european currently living in germany (but probably moving to paris soon) i don't speak a single language perfectly (have learnt too many in my life for my poor brain to cope with) i'm currently 27, and planning on staying that way until i become 35 in about 15 years. am averagely tall (about 180cm) and averagely heavy (about 80kg) i usually cycle everywhere, which keeps care of the health side, because my daily commute is between 50 and 100 km, but it's too cold at the moment, so i'm taking the train. i'm a concert pianist, and i sing okay as a hobby. i teach university level maths. i'm very interested in open source software and spend most of my freetime at the moment breaking linux. i also like drawing and writing. sadly i haven't yet written anything in english. and my breakfast is now ready... edited: there i go forgetting the most important things. i'm male, gay, brown-hair and brown-eyes. i'm politically extreme left. i harbour an intense dislike of bush and the people behind him. i'm 100% atheist, and tend to laugh at religious people.
