    Chapter 1

Abschnitt 1 The different possible states were clearly defined in his thoughts. The transitions between them lucid. He tried to compile the table for the mapping function in order to replace the non-deterministic machine with a deterministic one. The gentle swaying of the carriage helped him concentrate. But concentrate was the wrong word; he was part of the system that he considered. There was no other world for him in this moment. The rain fell against the window next to him and the carriag

    Chapter 1

Chapter1 He sat in the seminar and looked at his essay. He knew he was doing badly. He'd received bad marks for most of the assignments he'd handed in, and they were getting worse. Every week he had had to submit a short essay on the period of history being dealt with in the lectures. To start with, the teacher of the seminar had written long notes in red ink across his work. In the course of the semester, the notes had got shorter and his marks had got worse. The teacher didn't seem to be ta

it's a bummer being forced to use a format which the rest of the world can only read if they send lots of money to microsoft a college has no business forcing students to use any particular software. it should instead require standardized formats (like txt, html, odt, ...). where's stallman when you need him?
  6. i must be quite strange in this regard because i never listen to music. well, at least i don't have any cds or mp3s or whatever, but i often listen to something in my head. basically i can't stand listening to piano or vocal music because i always feel such a yearning to play or sing it myself. in fact i find almost all music in public places hugely annoying. i much prefer silence. strangely, some of my writing reminds me of music after i've written it. the chapter of die rettung i posted here always reminds me of an anthem by woods called 'expectans expectavi' (in expectation i waited). it's a hauntingly beautiful work and one of my favourites when i was small. there's a general feeling of pure beauty being concealed or veiled, like a jewel poking through the sediment at the bottom of a pond.
  7. there's a thread about the difference between admitting that you're not straight and admitting that you're an atheist on richarddawkins.net/forum at the moment, in case anybody's interested. here it is: clickety
  8. yeah, i'm a big fan of free speech too. i'd like to think my story has literary merit, though that won't be the first thing you think of when you read it as it is though, if there's the slightest chance someone could get in trouble for it being posted here i'd say it's not worth risking.
  9. legal problem? oh no, that doesn't sound good someone told me yesterday that in countries where ip addresses are filtered (probably to protect us from the terrorists) nifty may be banned, so i'll find somewhere else to host my story well, nifty's posted it, but i've asked them to take it down, so i'll see what happens.
  10. yeah, i think i'll send it to nifty instead. thanks for the advice
  11. looking at it realistically, if there aren't different categories for stories based on the 'adult nature' of their content, i really can't see the story being accepted. it's quite a lot more gratuitous than the first story i published here :-D if Talonrider or C James wanted to get in touch however, i'd send them a copy
  12. hi i've just written another short story, but it's really pornographic. would gayauthors.org be willing to host it or should i go to somewhere like nifty instead? howie
  13. cool
  14. if you want a new definition of pain, my boss decided recently we should all go ajaxy and web2.0ish on the company's internet presence. so i started programming. trying to support the official standards <b>and</b> ie6 almost killed me. i hope ie7 will be better, not that i'll ever touch it, but at least i won't have to jump through quite so many hoops. btw, if anyone's interested. i'm working on another two chapters for my story 'die rettung'. there's not a release date set yet, but watch this space howie
  15. if would of course also be useful for librettos, film scripts and the like i'll start work on it as soon as i have a spare month what do you think of java as a language for this sort of project? it would probably be easier to use a scripting language, but then you have portability problems and XML is a lot more than just a message format have a look at odt, docbook, etc howie
  16. hi everybody i was busy last night reading 'lady windemere's fan' with some friends. one of them hadn't been able to get the book on time and had downloaded a translation from the net (which meant that we had three different translations, which was sometimes quite amusing). anyway. he hasn't got a printer so he sent it to me so i could print it. it was of course in doc format *grumble* *grumble*. so i sat in frount of my computer for about an hour editing it to make it look passable; standardising the paragraph structure, putting buehnenanweisungen (staging directions?) in italics etc. and i thought, why doesn't someone write an XML format for plays? something like: <play name="lady windermere's fan" author="oscar wilde"> <act number="1" setting="room in lady windermere's house"> <staging instruction="goes to table and picks up fan" /> <sentence speaker="ladywindermere">This is my first sentence! yuh-huh!<staging instruction="jumps in the air"/>I'm so happy!</sentence> <sentence speaker="doriangrey">I'm in the wrong work</sentence> </act> <act number="2"... ... ... </play> then i could write a little software in java to allow plays to be written and edited on a windowing system etc. etc. does software like this already exist? i haven't found anything... i even already have a name for it: playwrite howie
  17. actually i've started counting in hexadecimal. i'm now 20, and no longer 1F (sorry snowy, i mean of course 0x20)
  18. i wonder if some idiot could actually get a bill of that nature passed: no sex outside marriage. in some states it couldn't be that difficult. sometimes the growing fundamentalisation of the world scares me. the fundamentalist lobby is way too well organised.
  19. if i remember correctly, the problem is that apple doesn't release details for the connection between the bsd operating system and the aqua user interface, with the result that it's not as easy as i could be to write software for it, so basically, they're shooting themselves in the foot a bit there (of course, it still is a lot easier to write (or port) software for os x than it is to write software to do certain things in windows) celeron processors (or intel in general) is worth looking into, because intel is quite open to the linux community, which is the future of computing.
  20. alternatively, cut and paste the whole thing into a text editor and add: <html> <pre> before your text, and </pre> </html> afterwards. then save as text_name.htm ... .. ... and have a heart-attack when you open it in your favourite browser howie
  21. well, five people have voted and they've all voted for jesse and not stephan, which surprises me (though i voted for him too). i read the first 20 chapters in about 2 hours and greatly enjoyed it. when's chapter 21 coming? howie
  22. ho-ho-ho hee-hee-hee
  23. as a geek i should really jump in here and say that sci-fi has nothing to do with magic. howie
  24. i think i'd be quite lonely, if i were you. i wonder how long you'll be happy with the situation. do you know any other glb people irl? howie
