Daniel's full history with his mother will be explored further in later chapters. It is definitely a complex relationship, full of disappointment for our young friend. As for Loz, you're about to find out a lot more about what goes on in his head.

Hey Lisa! Awesome to hear from you! I am well, thank you. Glad you've decided to give my story a go. Hope you continue to enjoy it in spite of the angst.

Julie was not especially tall, but I was no taller than she was, and I wondered briefly if I would be short forever, or if I’d eventually have this growth spurt everyone always talked about. My mum was petite. Perhaps my dad had been short as well. She sat me down on the toilet in the accessibility bathroom and went to the sink to soak a wad of paper towels in cold water. She knelt in front of me and began to wipe my face. ‘So, what was that about?’ she asked softly after a minute. I looked

    The Homecoming

Glad you liked it! They had a lot of catching up to do, after Mark spent all that time in hospital.

Julie's definitely a smart cookie. She knows what's up.

Almost the moment I’d left the nurse’s office, I wanted to go back. I still felt slighted. I had tried to be nice, to help him, and he had just rejected me. Pushed me away. It didn’t seem fair. But part of me also realised that this was not about me. Of course it wasn’t. How selfish and narcissistic was it of me to behave like he somehow owed me something, just because I’d done the decent thing? My cheeks burned with shame, and I made a quick stop by a bathroom to splash some cold water on my f

Michael's had a rather privileged upbringing, which has left him somewhat naïve, it's true. Loz is a piece of work. Definitely a broken boy in his own right.

Because I'm a sadistic fuck? Honestly, the path I had originally planned for him was quite a bit rougher than the one I'm leading him onto now. That said... Well, wait and see, I guess.

Something about my conversation with Mr. Griffiths seemed to have lifted a load from my shoulders, and for the week that followed I felt less hopeless than I had before, in spite of the bullying. The fact that my teacher took the time to talk to me, to ask how I was, made me feel so much better than I would have thought. It was good to feel like someone was on my side for once, and not just in my head, either. I passed Mr. Griffiths in the corridors several times, and each time he would meet my
  14. Nicest anyone's done for me would have to be the support my mum has been giving me, both financially and morally, while I've been struggling with my depression and making bad calls. That's the kind of unconditional love you think only exists in storybooks. My mum isn't perfect, but she's always been there for me. Nicest thing I've done for someone else, I don't really know. I guess it could be going over to my friends' house to cook them dinner as they've just had a baby and I thought they could use an afternoon without other domestic responsibilities on top of that. It wasn't entirely altruistic, though, as I did want to meet the baby.

‘I’m home,’ I said, tossing the front door key in the bowl on the dresser. ‘How was school?’ Mum called from the kitchen. I could smell something cooking. The scent of rosemary filled the flat. ‘Fine,’ I said. ‘Just a normal school day, really.’ Which was a total lie, of course. Today, my heart had been broken into a million pieces. School had decidedly not been fine. Mum appeared in the doorway from the kitchen, wearing a flowery apron. ‘Would you be a dear and pop next door to borrow a cup

This story will be somewhat of a slow burn, compared to my usual style, but all will be revealed in time, I promise.

You'll find out with time, I can tell you that much. Michael is a lovely person. The kind of kid who grew up privileged, but with parents who didn't let that make him conceited. Unfortunately, it has also made him a little bit naïve...

‘Who is that kid, anyway?’ I asked, leaning back against a desk. ‘Who?’ Patrick leafed through his notes until he found the correct page and handed me the notebook. ‘Ta.’ I took the book. ‘The one you were bullying,’ I continued. ‘I wasn’t—’ ‘Yeah you were, but that’s not the point. What’s his name?’ Patrick shrugged. ‘No idea. Don’t care. Fucking hate that guy. Bleeding little homo.’ I elected not to engage, skimming through the notes instead, though my mind was miles aw
