The beat was contagious, pumping in a way that caused people to move. You couldn't stop yourself, you just moved. Will moved. He bounded onto the chair, riding it down to the floor as he slid in his socks across to the front of the stereo and turned up the music, letting the sounds of the heavy base pound out of the retro seventies speakers Brody had rigged up as he charged off again. He was in a good mood, actually enjoying himself for the first time in ages, it was nothing he could exp

Andrew found Will outside. He had been picking out a small plate full of sandwiches when he noticed Will wasn't eating. To be suddenly thrust into a social situation with his father had to be really upsetting for Will. Despite all his claims of being happily independent, there was still a lot of pain left behind by his father's complete rejection of who he was. Andrew leaned on the balcony rail and extended the plate of sandwiches under Will's nose. "Eat," he said firmly, worriedly touch

Andrew was up early the next morning, still living out of his suitcases and because he hadn't taken the time to unpack he was unable to find anything that wasn't wrinkled beyond recognition. There was a growing pile of clothes on the floor as he dug through the bags for something at least passably presentable, finally finding a sweater and a pair of drab tan chinos that would look all right. He took a long shower and was relieved to find his mom had bought him some more shampoo, although

"Her name's Cynthia," Will said, sitting in the Tim Horton's and glancing at the girl Jared had been surreptitiously eyeing for the past twenty minutes. "Huh?" Jared asked, snapping out of his daydream and giving his head a shake to clear it. Will looked over his shoulder at the young Chinese girl who was working behind the counter pouring coffee and smiling sweetly at the customers; he glanced back at the lovestruck Jared. "Bit obvious, innit?" he stated, jerking his head in Cynthia's

Will was eating cereal and reading a newspaper when Brody came down the next morning, smacking his lips, his hair in disarray, and definitely looking like he needed an extra few hours of sleep time. He stood staring vacantly at the wall before he flopped onto the couch with a dramatic sigh of relief. Will looked up from his paper and shook his head in bemusement, "Morning, sir. Coffee?" "You know why I like living with you?" Brody said, rolling a bit to look back. "It's like I ha

Will was early for school that morning. His Sunday had been relaxing despite the fact that Andrew hadn't been around, his mother insisting he spend the day with her, shopping. He had grumbled about it to Will Saturday night, the two of them promising to postpone their dinner together and the usual antics that came afterwards for later in the week; privacy at Brody's wasn't a possibility when hockey night in Canada was on. Will found it more humerous that it was Andrew who seemed to take

Andrew was leading Will by the tie up the steps of the house, banging open the screen door as they entered the hallway. Brody, sitting on the couch, looked up at them both in surprise and grinned. "Andrew," he greeted, "I see you finally housebroke your pet." Andrew shrugged, heading for the stairs, "He can do tricks, too." Will spluttered indignantly, "Excuse me? I'd rather you not discuss my sex life with my roommate, if you please..." Andrew turned and pulled t

"Ever have the urge to reach across and snap someone's suspenders?" Andrew asked mopping up a stray bit of egg yoke with a piece of toast. Denny's was crowded, as it often was, with the breakfast crowd, the waitresses rushing between the tables with huge plates piled high with pancakes, eggs and bacon. It was the Mecca of anyone searching for a decent breakfast, the hearty sort that made people feel good and turned even the most docile of men into a carnivore. Andrew loved it. Wi

"Mister Carter, if you would kindly pay attention?" Mister Greenwood called out, snapping Will back from his idle staring out of the window. He flashed the old English teacher a wry grin. "Sorry sir," he said, adjusting in his chair and trying to focus again on Greenwood's assessment of Shakespeare. It was one of those broiling hot days near the end of the school year when outside seemed suddenly so much more appealing than sweltering indoors. "Perhaps then, Mister Carter, you wo

Will has grown up, and into his relationship with Andrew. He has discovered that teaching brings its own rewards, and that the shyest kid in his class is crying out for someone to notice him. Will must come to grips with his own family, and finally put some old demons to rest as his grandmother arrives to inspect the new addition to her family.

December 5th It was a sort of half-and-half establishment, a restaurant with a bar. Smoky bronze mirrors and comfortable seating. There was a pool table tucked off towards the back of the restaurant that really looked more like a bar than a restaurant. Luckily no one questioned them when they went in, and the waitress, a stout blonde woman with spiky blonde hair showed them to their table and went off to fetch them a couple of drinks. Will had kept his gaze firmly on the mug w

December 6th There he was again, day two of trying to survive high school after being branded a Fag. He had ridden in with Brody and had luckily been spared the bus ride. It felt kind of good not to be bouncing along the back roads with a whole bunch of screaming kids who liked nothing more than to be as rude and as vulgar as they could. Brody was unusually boisterous that morning; it was as if he awoke each morning with a new burst of energy that he couldn't contain. He seeme

December 11th He deftly tied the tie, over through, under over, up through, down through; it was a long practiced seamless motion. He pulled the borrowed silk tie tight against the crisp black shirt, pleased with himself. Not many people he knew could tie ties, and when he did it, it just felt so effortless. It was a way to build confidence and he took it gladly. He slipped on the dark green cashmere jacket, another loan, but it felt good on him. Dark green gave a hint of colo

December 6th Greenwood calmly set a hand on Will's shoulder, staring him squarely in the eye "Mister Carter?" He inquired calmly, "Are you going to be ok?" Will stared at the kindly old gentleman's face, feeling himself still shaking from the shock of the situation, "I don't know." He replied with total honesty. He was beginning to recover from the surprise of being caught; beginning to think again, and his thoughts terrified him. Greenwood nodded, "Come with me Mister Ca

December 6th The day just seemed to be getting longer for Will, lunch time he had planned just to find a quiet corner and hide, but for some bizarre reason seniors kept saying hello to him. There were still dirty looks, even a few snide comments thrown at him by kids in his own grade and lower, but the seniors seemed split. Some openly acknowledging him warmly, some with looks of pity and others with outright hostility. As a group of senior girls said hello to him and walked a

December Will was out walking the streets. There was a large park in the centre of the small downtown area, little more than a patch of ground containing a swing set and a small war memorial. The courthouse, the town hall, a library and a church surrounded this park. It was, in Will's mind, a beautiful, if desolate part of town at three a.m.. He had found an increasing need to be outside lately as it drew ever closer to Christmas. He felt a heightened sense of solitude that k

December 12th The mad Christmas countdown was in full swing. It seemed everyone was talking about what they wanted, what their plans were for the holidays, a myriad of things that Will felt detached from. It all seemed suddenly pointless to him as he sat in Mister Taylor's math class watching the man try to explain quadratic equations for the hundredth time. It just would not sink in, no matter what way Will looked at the damn problem his mind wandered away from it. He kept dr

December Brody's worn pickup was already parked in the drive when the battered Mustang rolled to a stop behind it. Andrew made a move to open the door and get out, but Will stopped him with a gentle hand on his arm. "We're alone," he said with a slight hint of red entering his cheeks. Surprised, Andrew looked around the car at the deserted suburban street lit by orange street lamps and houses decorated with multicoloured Christmas lights. Will was right; they were alone,

December Absolution is not something a person can easily attain; it isn't something that can be given freely. Absolution must be earned, in the heart as well as in the mind. For some men it is impossible to earn the kind of forgiveness needed to move forward in their lives. They remain trapped within a single mistake, and exist within it for the rest of their days. William Carter, son of Major David Carter, closed the book and stared out of the window at the gentle dusting of

December Will had wanted to say something, anything, but Andrew had flashed him an apologetic look before he raced after Charlene. Will slumped against his locker; he had known it would happen, he had tried to protect Andrew from it, they had even had a warning in the form of Mister Greenwood surprising them. But they had still been reckless, begging for exactly that situation. Will glanced at his watch, there was still half an hour left to lunch and he knew it would be one o

December 10th He was sitting in the library with the Scrapbook open on the table in front of him. It was a biography on Hollywood stars of the fifties. He sat there quietly studying the pages rereading the section on Dean's life. James Dean had been little more than a boy when he died, killed at twenty-four on the highway near Paso Robles, California, on September 30, 1955, while on his way to a sports car meet. At the time of his death, Dean had completed three movies, East o

December It was the first time they had been together since the cat had escaped the proverbial bag. Will felt nervous, as he remained standing, back against the rail overlooking the now quiet ice rink. He had decided to hang back as the others rushed down to congratulate the team and participate in the merriment. He hadn't felt a part of it, being the one to nearly cost the team a game - an unforgivable sin in the minds of most Canadians. But Andrew, equipment bag slung casually over

December 25th Will was thirsty, it was sometime ridiculously early in the morning, and he needed a drink. It was that kind of bone-dry that left the mouth feeling like it was gummy and slimy. He hated that feeling, and he decided to venture out of the den to go get a drink of water. He first had to extricate himself from the cocooning embrace Andrew had wrapped him up in. It was the third night they had ever spent together, and so it was the third night in his life that he had

March 20th, 2004 It was a cold and damp day in Halisham England; the rain had started sometime early in the morning, and the grey sky seemed to match the feelings the day shared with the people clustered around the freshly-turned earth. It wasn't a day for celebration; it was a day for mourning. Not to mourn that which had been lost, but to mourn instead that which never was. Time had done little to heal most wounds, and the two halves of a shattered family stood on opposite sid

December 24th Christmas mass was a unique event in that small town, it was the one religious event where the whole town crowded into that old church. The religious and agnostic alike attended that service. It had been decided a long time ago that the mass be held jointly in the same church, both Anglicans and Catholics sharing in one larger and common show of faith. It was Father Fitzpatrick's turn that year to host the ceremony, and perform it in a traditional Catholic fashio
