    Chapter 33

The owner of the cabin company is afraid David could create a competitor. They also wouldn't need to continue paying David a fee for the sales of his cabin design. As a business person, that is. smart move. As a creator that isn't a smart move. It puts a hold on David's creativity.

If not full-time, at least as a second home. He will be good company for David.

    Chapter 33

I think it will. The cabin is designed for one person but I noticed David included the possibility of a guest.

Yes, and I think it will be shared on most days.

    Chapter 32

It depended on where you lived. In Bobby's case, there were no schools nearby. His family probably at least attended school through primary school. It was common for children to attend at least 8 grades depending on where they lived, high school.

    Chapter 33

Arriving at the mountain, Bobby helped me carry the lumber to the outhouse. He took the books home to show his mother and I'm sure to read them as well. With his help and a few of the men, it took me a week to finish the shed. The last thing was to place a finish on the roof. I stopped at the supply store which once had supplied the lumberjacks and now supplies some of the builders at Crystal Lake. I ordered rolls of peel-and-stick roofing material. When that arrived, I covered the roof of

    Chapter 31

I grew up in the forties and used the out house. I only used the bedroom pot when I stayed and slept over at my grandparents.

    Chapter 31

They were not available at the time. They can be messy. A neighbor had one in his cabin, he said he had to clean it when they left or the smell when they returned was enough to book a night at a motel . Besides having an outhouse, he would have a bedroom pot. He could empty it in the morning, wash it out, and start fresh the next evening.

    Chapter 31

I used my first cabin as a model with some minor changes.

    Chapter 31

The water that flows behind the cabin results from snow melting from the top of the mountain and it will be cold. The winter will be cold even if the stream dries up or reduces the flow considerably. He is planning on building a pit that will be cold from any of the stream that will flow through the box.

    Chapter 32

"Get me a cup of coffee and I'll show you my design" As it turned out, Michael brought me the coffee. He wanted to see the design as well. Within 20 minutes, four more of the men that were there were looking over my shoulder as well. Then the questions. "How are you going to heat the cabin?" "The fireplace will be enough." "But where are you going to get the wood? The trees won't like it if you cut them down." The trees will allow me to gather up the fallen branches. I can

    Chapter 31

I stayed home, wanted to design my cabin, and had the tools to do that at home. The basic cabin will be like the one I designed for Uncle Joe. It will consist of three parts, a kitchen area, an area equivalent to a living room, and a bedroom area. Dad asked what I would do for a toilet, there isn’t a sewage system. Then I remembered reading about the earlier settlers and the outhouse. Now I’ll need to design an outhouse as well. I basically used the outline I did for Uncle Joe’s cabin. Only

    Chapter 30

I was getting ready to go to Mrs. Cummings for the night when Uncle Joe said we should stay here. “The night will talk to you as well as the day. We need to listen to the night.” So I went to the jeep and brought up the bedrolls that we used on the first trip we took. I had never removed them from the cart. I wondered if Bobby was going to stay as well. I asked him, but he said he had a warm bed at home. That night after Bobby left us, the quiet was broken by the sound of the stream. I

    Chapter 29

I think the bond between Uncle Joe and David is very strong. David will do whatever is necessary to ensure Uncle Joe is happy.

    Chapter 29

I am not sure Uncle Joe could handle the cold. Remember he spent his time at the reservation from late Fall until Spring. Then David designed a home for him with heat so he could stay longer. He still made visits to the reservation, that was home for Uncle Joe.

    Chapter 29

Yes, but Uncle Joe is quite old. I'm not sure who will miss more, David or Uncle Joe.

    Chapter 29

Despite the history of the trees and the mountain that doesn't mean another developer will try again will David try to stop that if it does happen? The trees will. But once David has his home there, it will be difficult for a logger to manage.

    Chapter 28

I noticed when I was camping that as I climbed the mountain, the brush and trees became less and less. I never climbed high enough to determine exactly when the trees stopped growing, but I have taken the liberty of having Dacid find the tree line of this mountain.

    Chapter 28

MOTHER NATURE stopped by when I was writing this. She insisted I acknowledge the trees. There is a poem (I think) called Trees. I seemed to recollect a statement that starts, there is nothing as

    Chapter 28

Many people enjoy life as a singular individual. To them, friends are very important, and Uncle Joe is perhaps David's guide in many ways. Uncle Joe's influence has contributed to David's decision to live as an individual, but we are not to live alone; ergo, we need friends. I wonder if his mother was a different person. I'm sure she influenced his decision.

I am envious of David. I would have loved to have had a friend like Uncle Joe.

    Chapter 27

Uncle Joe's knowledge will help David. Uncle Joe reminds me of an old neighbor of mine. He had remedies for all sorts of ills. Wisdom is based on experience and knowledge.

    Chapter 27

Have you known someone who appears to be able to determine something that you never thought about? One day my father and I went for a walk in the woods, my dad stopped and took some of the root of this small bush. It was Sassafras root. My dad is long gone, but I still can taste that tea. I had to include it in my story.

    Chapter 28

Early the next morning, Uncle Joe and I returned to Mrs. Cummings and the mountain. On the way, I told Uncle Joe about the lumber people pulling out because of Mrs. Cummings husband's death. The trees have a voice, “I was hoping you may be able to talk with them. I like this place and would like to build my home there but I don’t want to offend the trees.” Pulling into Mrs. Cummings, I introduced Uncle Joe to her. When I went to get our gear, Uncle Joe said he wanted to stay on the mountain
