The next day, before the second half of tryouts began, the four first-years, Lindsay, and the other humans gathered for breakfast in the main building cafeteria. “He was a bumbling idiot,” Rafe retold the events of last night as he and Andre shared a couple of twinkies. “I mean, more so than usual.” Lindsay looked up from fiddling with her WardNav and blew out a breath laced with both approval and disappointment. “If he were human, his future would be clear. Potbelly, permanent five o’

“Feel the bird. Be the bird,” Joe murmured as he mimicked a monk in the midst of meditation, hovering five feet over his seat in the Adam Society common room. Rafe, levitating right across from him, snorted. “That’s shit’s so stupid. I’d rather be an eagle.” “Bro, I’d rather be an alkonost than anything.” “No, you’d rather date an alkonost.” Joe shrugged shamelessly. “I mean, they’re usually cute.” “It’s a bird with a woman’s head,” the blond balked at him. “It’s still a

“I’m so fucking sick of that bastard!” Rafe hissed, his fists clenched on his knees, seething while glaring into his lap. Andre, seated next to him at the bleachers he had been watching from, rubbed his best friend’s back soothingly. The hover screens had been focused on other participants at the time of the confrontation, but he had a feeling something went wrong the second Rafe popped back in on home base. “He’s the biggest of schmucks, yeah. He ruined your favorite shirt.” The

“Three and a half hours,” their lion shifter coach, named Sarabi, spoke near-monotonously as they moved toward the edge of the War Field. “That’s how long this whole thing will take. Six groups for six tests, and you’ve just done two. Which calculates to thirty-five minutes a station. Thankfully, Emais is strict when it comes to time, so this won’t take a second more. “Okay, so, luckily for us, we get the boring part over with early. You’ll be completing a brief written exam. And I use the

Despite a tumultuous first day, the rest of the week seemed to pass by seamlessly – or rather, as much as it could. In Andre’s mind, the last class of the day with Miss Hallsworth made the week slog by quite a bit. He was all too happy that it was Friday. “Oh, man,” the omé let himself fall back on his bed, blowing out an exhausted breath. “I don’t think I can take another day of that class. I can’t keep walking around without being able to feel my limbs.” Rafe chuckled as he headed ov

Zoel snickered as he stared the blond superhuman down. “Go ahead. Use those dumb eye beams of yours again. I’ll make sure to deflect them into one of your buddies’ hearts this time.” “I don’t need them to put you down!” Rafe scoffed, watching the gamma wolf closely. His surroundings disappeared, looking for the subtlest signature of when his opponent will come after him. Eventually, there was a brief gleam in Zoel’s dark eyes, and this time, Rafe was ready when the older male finally c

“In a story, there is always the main character,” Hallsworth spoke as the class ran circles around the huge gymnasium. “An individual whose survival is vital to the narrative. They get all the luck, plot armor, and the privilege of a happy ever after as their ending. Unfortunately, this is real life, and there are no such thing as main characters in the real world. All of you are fodder, and the next time you even blink could be your last millisecond on this plane of existence. No heartfelt spee

The intensity of the beatdown with Zoel seemed to have simmered considerably as the four first-years sat at a round table in Dalhia Diner and stuffed themselves with their most exquisite meals. Just a couple of taps and swipes on their WardNav and they had all kinds of strange-looking food on plates before them brought by a waiter or waitress, but the oddity of it all didn’t matter when the first bite made them chow down for more. “I had no idea wolves were strong like that, man!” Joe wonde

It was quiet for a moment before Rafe marched up in front of Daeran, standing tall a couple of feet away from the imposing, angry wolf as he glowered back. “What the hell are you talking about?” “Did those leeches put you up to this?” Zoel pointed an accusatory finger at the blond superhuman’s face. “They’ve already got you puny squirts on your knees sucking their little dicks!?” Behind Rafe, Daeran sputtered, his trembling arms clutching the satchel tighter. “What…? I-I-” Jo

The next class was back in indoors, though, it wasn’t located in the main building this time. The first-years traveled to a greenhouse dome, not too far from the gardens. Rafe grinned down at Andre. “You owe me a hundred bucks if I fall asl-l” Before he could finish that statement, however, the room began to distort the second they took a step in. The colors of the real world evaporated into darkness before orbs of light dotted the blacked-out canvas. Three-dimensional spheres of diffe

*sigh* Bad news and good news. Bad news first: I hate to do this. I promised myself I wouldn’t with this story, but I’m at the end of my rope with it. I haven’t been in the mood to continue this story because it’s seeming endless at this point. I have all the plotlines in my head and what I want to get done, but the build-up is what’s killing my creative mood. And it all stems back from the one thing that I should’ve done in the first place: Make a damned outline. N

First on the list: World Formation. The WardNav described it as a class where they’ll “learn about the beginnings of Earth and other planets associated with it.” Whatever the hell that meant… Rafe, Andre, Joe, and Daeran marched down a wide corridor, followed by a group of several other first-years who trailed behind them like a bunch of toadies, which might have had a lot to do with Rafe’s fight with a certain barbarian last night. Rafe should have felt like a celebrity but, havi

There was something… cold hovering nearby. A pair of menacing, black orbs – he could not see, but he could just tell – stared down at him with all the hunger and malevolence that could only be mustered from such an otherworldly creature. The freezing, ghastly wisps of power whipped across his face, and its icepick fingers trailed down like a razor across his cheek. His skin crawled, and he struggled to move, but it was as if he was a block of ice himself. A trail of frost slowly traced a pa

If Rafe had the ability to use his eye lasers at will, he’d totally smite that scraggly, maroon wild-haired boy in front of him and vertically slice him in half. Chestnut eyes glared heatedly back at him as they circled each other. Rafe, despite his body feeling heavier than usual and his mind sort of muddled, was brimming with the need to punch something, and the uppity, second-rate barbarian was the perfect target. The partygoers gathered around them as the two first-years stared each oth

They had walked into pandemonium. Like most parties, it was loud, the deafening beat of the music shaking the entire basement, which was as wide and long as a supermarket. The goers were already at it, dancing, drinking, and making a fool of themselves without a care in the world. It was madness under the colorful strobe lights. However, the most outrageous thing that entrapped the first-years wasn’t the sheer chaos, but the blatant debauchery happening right in front of them. On one s

The interior of the dorm rooms was a lot better than a lot of ones he’s seen in photos. For first-years, there was a lot of space for two people. It looked more like a wizard’s bedroom, mini-queen beds on each side of the room along with their own desks with a large window in between, a sliding closet door adjacent to the exit, and a small couch beside it. It was inhabitable, and that was all that Rafe had cared about. Andre, on the other hand, had been gushing about from the curtains to th

It was another half-hour later when the commencement finally ended, and people were back out in the front parking lot as friends and family wished their children goodbye and good luck. There were tearful and bittersweet farewells all around. Luckily, Beau and Toby weren’t that dramatic. “I’m sure you guys don’t need me to say it, but you guys will do just fine here,” Beau said as they, along with Joe, reached the Alicorn. Rafe rolled his eyes, smirking at him. “Don’t jinx it, old

It was as if they stepped into a royal court or something. The auditorium, specifically known as the Palace of Thorns, was a couple of miles long and deep in pink and gold. There were rows and rows of tufted chairs on the ground floor and half as many on the three balconies that hovered above like clouds. The place was filling up, but not even the new students and their families could make today a full house. Beau hurried their group along into the upper levels, eager to get a place on

It's either 9 or 10 years. Technically, it's 9 years because my starting point is the first day they start as first-years and counting up until the first day they become tenth-years. (So, on their first day as second-years, they'd have been there for 1 year).

Next week arrived all too soon, and the first day of Ironward came upon them. Luckily for the boys, Beau and Toby had already got to packing their stuff in suitcases, spending the rest of the time either getting cleaned and dressed or trying to stay awake. While the latter rang true for Andre, Rafe was wide awake, sitting at the edge of his bed and blankly watching Beau and Toby move around their room, examining it for any materials that might be useful to take, as Andre was perched next to

“Goddammit!” Andre pinched his lips to contain his giggle as he watched Rafe squint angrily at the bark of a tree. “Who was that?” Caster’s voice piped up from the cellphone speaker. “Sorry. That was Rafe. He’s just doing some pre-dinner workout.” Which he had been doing for the last three hours. Andre had woken up from a dreamless nap to ireful growling. At first, he panicked that it was a Graybite wolf who had come to collect on behalf of Renkin, who had changed his mind.

Andre moved fast. Rafe was shocked into immobility, Beau had been busy guarding Toby, and Mr. Gylarcan didn’t bother to lift a finger, but the young wolf was able to recognize the alarm on Bones’ face. His legs acted on their own, quickly leaping for the boy they met only a couple of minutes ago. With his focus on the ball of snarls and gnashing teeth hurtling toward him, the latter didn’t see the omé slide in next to him with untapped speed, latch hands under his arms, and zip out of the w

Another week elapsed before their scheduled orientation day arrived. “Rise and shine, boyos! It’s school time!” Both Rafe and Andre shot right up beside each other as the bed they both slept in next to each other jostled and swayed, their heads nearly colliding with one another. “Hey!” Rafe barked at Beau, who stood at the end with a smug grin on his bearded face. His large hands didn’t even look like they were moving as they lay atop the mattress to make it tremble. Andre bl

2 Months Later They had gone to Spain, and it was a nice trip despite it being impromptu. Though, it became less about Graybite and more about the change in scenery. Hopefully, the alpha wouldn’t have to quiz Andre on tribe facts when he eventually returned. He, Rafe, Beau, and his mate, Toby, were currently residing in a visitor’s cabin in the Serpente Woodlands, home of the Radon Tribe and where Beau made his transition into lupinehood. And the omé could not ignore the differences. I

The following narrative is recounted by: ABRAHAM BOSSON Well, it’s been a while since I thought about any of this. With everything happening, I wanted nothing but to stray far away from all things Tuct Side and darkness permeating it. Monsters existed everywhere, I know that, but it’s always the first interaction that follows you around like your own personal demon. Wondering if you could have done something. If there was a single second where you could have changed everything for the bette
