I arrived at our neighbour's lodge at eight o'clock precisely, dressed in my finest jacket, the one my mother had previously deemed unnecessary for dinner with this same family. Princess Agnia Gabrelyanov called on my mother. I was not there at the time, but I know the meeting did not go well. My mother told my father that the princess was exasperating. She continuously spoke about herself, her family, and worse, she decried everyone else whose paths she had crossed as villainous scoundrels. @drpaladin The Russian Hussars, and yes, Konstantin is one and in the cavalry, were the craziest military, live fast and die young was their motto. Anyone could join and young men were often recruited through drinking sessions. The Hussars had a reputation for being the most daring of troops and also for drinking a lot. In times of peace they played hard, cherished their honour, and were always ready to fight to the death.

When I did finally get out of bed, the only thought I had was, 'how could I get to know these neighbours and their friends?' Before bothering with breakfast I strolled around outside the house next door. Not too close, I did not want to be caught snooping, although there was nobody about. I saw no one inside. To answer you both, I don't want to say too much and spoil the story, let me just say that as the summer moves on and things happen, our shy youth grows up and that is never all smooth sailing.

Thank you @Daddydavek for commenting, it is useful to know how our protagonist comes across to readers and that the story reflects those characteristics. His name is mentioned in the story summary, but in the story itself, not until chapter four.

The little estate, if you could call it that, being only a few buildings, a garden, and the woods beyond, was all the same served by a kitchen garden. Thank you. I'm pleased I captured your imagination and wetted your appetite for the story. The next chapter is shorter! It wouldn't be any problem if I published the whole book, however, being serialised it might leave you having to wait too long. When the chapters are short I will publish the next one as soon as possible, which should be a day later, although being a newbie, it has to get reviewed before publishing. We were living in Moscow where my parents had rented a house. It was a short walk across the river to the Alexander Gardens and I used to go there each day. Usually the mornings, but sometimes at dusk. From where I entered the park you could see the Borovitskaya Tower with it's green roofed spire. Of course, the place was not the same in summer as it was covered with the winter snow. Honestly, I can't say which time of year I preferred the most, but the warmth of the sun lifted my spirit. N
