@scrubber6620 yeah, of course, he will! He's made a promise to George 🥰

@Anton_Cloche Because this is war.. 😢 😭 Ans as for that quote, yes, Kristian is referring to Jørgen. Everything's explained in the previous chapter

Time passed. Many more tears flew. The pain was still vivid and his heart still bitter. He braced himself for another mission, took a deep breath as he finished gathering his stuff. Kristian came to see him before he left. “How are you feeling?” It seemed like a dumb question, but Karl smiled as he knew he cared. Then he sighed. “I’ve learnt to live with it, I guess. It’s not as if I had any other choice anyway.” “I know.” There was a long moment of silence that se

Karl still had no news about Jørgen and it was more than his mind could take. Training or missions didn’t matter anymore. He was going to go and look for him himself and bring him back no matter what if they couldn’t do it. No one could stop him this time. He wasn’t in the mood to argue. As he was making his way to the huge shed, he came across Arthur and Kristian. Since they stood in his way, he had no other choice than stopping in his tracks. Arthur still had that emotionless look on

Well.... Bit of a kind of fishing expedition I guess 😂

@Anton_Cloche Well, about the "royals" thing, since this is supposed to be only a first draft, I had this idea that suddenly popped into my mind one day about imagining him as a character with royal blood but being the fruit of a forbidden relationship, so with no characteristic of a legetimate child, but nothing seriously defined actually about his family, so yeah... I mentioned it to kind of test it and see how people would react about it 😅

27th June, 1943 Dear Karl, We are all doing well thanks to God’s mercy. I am happy to read that you are as well, and I am so sorry about your friend. May God protect him and keep him sane. I really hope he will be able to go back to his family sooner or later. We should never lose faith. I am sure this war will end one day. And, oh, my dear, congratulations for being promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal! I knew you would do it. Robert and I are so proud of you. I am sure you

Months went by, and before he had time to even realise it, his twenty-first birthday had passed. But there was nothing special about it; except that one more year had passed, and the war was still going on. He had carried out many other missions during that span of time and he had managed to survive. Luck had been on his side for every of them he guessed but most importantly, the more missions he had completed the more experience he had got with time. He didn’t count anymore the Luftwa

“Freedom, here I come!” That was the first thing he said when he got on board the ship that would take him to the other side of the world. The sunset made that moment even more perfect. It was the symbol of a beautiful promise to a new beginning. He had left his home to discover by himself the far away and immense landscapes he had heard so much about. The trip to London hadn’t been an easy one, but it had been worth it in the end. He remembered the amazement making him hold his breath wh

Karl thought Manu would be mad after what happened, but he kept pretending he hadn’t seen a thing. Clément kept avoiding him. He managed to find himself face to face with him at one point in the tunnels. “I’m sorry.” Clément avoided eye contact. Karl’s eyes widened as he didn’t try to go away. Had he tried, he would have held him back anyway. There was an awkward silence that lasted for a while and he couldn’t take it anymore. “I really am, please. I didn’t know what I was d

Karl didn’t leave his room for the next few days, but he couldn’t take it anymore to stay trapped there, doing nothing. So he decided to leave the farm to go on a walk. Of course, he made sure he wouldn’t be seen as he left his grim room. It seemed that Clément wasn’t there. He started as he heard a small bark. He had forgotten the dog guarding the house… He sighed. “Du må ikke sige noget til din mester, tak. Du ved ikke, hvordan det er at være fanget i mørket hele dagen og natten lang

It took him time to come to his senses, but when he woke up, he noticed he wasn’t alone. Clément was by his side, looking so concerned and sorry. Everything came back suddenly. The way they had treated him as if he were one of them. His jaw was clenched and his gaze hard and dark. “Je suis désolé…Je voulais pas que ça se passe comme ça… Fais-moi voir tes blessures.” I'm sorry. I didn't want things to happen that way... Let me see your wounds. Clément flinched as he jerked his ha

Clément didn’t waste any time. He took Karl to his and his sister’s room. He pushed her bed against the wall and opened the trapdoor that had been existing for longer than he could remember. “Viens avec moi !” He said as he looked at him. Come with me. They should never find that trapdoor. Never. They both went down. “Reste ici et fais-toi oublier pendant un moment. Ne fait aucun bruit, ne bouge pas et ne respire plus. Je m’occupe d’eux.” Stay here and pretend you don’t e

July 1942 There he went again. He was ready to leave for another mission. Nothing dangerous, but if things turned out like they had for his first one, he wasn’t sure he could deal with it another time. He was able to see Jørgen again at least before he had to leave, so it brought him some joy. He was to leave soon for another mission as well, something similar to his. They hugged each other as they were face to face. Jørgen chuckled. “Karl! It’s so good to see you again!

After weeks of crossing the ocean, he was finally back in England. He couldn’t stand the sea anymore. He jumped out of the boat with such eagerness, everyone around must have been stunned. He smiled at the contact of his feet with the ground and his whole body relaxed. He breathed in and out deeply. It was reminding him of the first time he had arrived in England. But he wasn’t totally back to square one, so he wasn’t that worried. He just needed to find a way to get back to the RAF station

It hurt. He didn’t know what. But it hurt. It hurt so much. Everything was nothing but pain. At one point, he didn’t see darkness anymore, but a dull brownish colour. Where was he? He was dead, right? He couldn’t move at least. What was happening? He swore he had just heard a faint echo, like a voice calling. Where was it coming from? Who did it belong to? Soon enough, he wasn’t seeing brown anymore, but indistinct faces hovering over him. Wait…Could this mean…he wasn’t dead…? He

Things weren’t as bad as he had imagined. The way the men treated him was alright. He couldn’t help thinking that the captain of the boat had made him understand that they would take him back to Denmark, to his home. The idea was such a sweet temptation, forgetting about all the bad things that had been happening, and just starting everything over once again, like a second chance for this doomed world. But he couldn’t give up. As Krisitian had said it himself, he had gone too far

He woke up in the same way as earlier, drank and ate a bit. “You’re really lucky to be still alive. I hope you’re aware of that. You can’t die after going through that.” Of course. He couldn’t. “D’ya feel strong enough to stand up now?” He looked up to meet his gaze. “Yeah.” “Good. I’m gonna take you to our leader now. Just one thing. Address him as “Admiral”. Our ranks in the Navy are different from yours in the Royal Air Force.” He put his index finger on his chin

He’s not dead! He’s still breathing. Look at his uniform! He’s from the Royal Air Force! He’s not an enemy. *** He felt like a dead weight as he regained consciousness. It took him time to adjust his vision. He wanted to speak but his lips were glued to each other. He could only make a weak, strangled sound. He didn’t know where he was. All he could see was white. And weird. “Finally. You’re awake.”

That was it. The day he had been expecting so much for the past week. The day he was going on his first mission. He was getting dressed before the only mirror they had. All alone. Of course, he had to put on the blue navy standard uniform. He was putting on his tie, something he had never liked to do, but which he knew how to do on his own now. Then there was the jacket that went with the uniform. And then over it, he put the brown leather jacket he had seen so many pilots wear; then a

That week of exams was nothing compared to the bombings they had gone through. Well, okay, maybe he was greatly exaggerating, but still. Jørgen had already left for his mission for a little while but hadn’t come back yet. Well, Kristian hadn’t either. He tried not to worry about him too but saying things was always much easier than doing them. He should be fine. He was currently waiting for Arthur to know if he had managed to pass or not in the room where he had taken the written

The following day, there was a ceremony that was held in Ibsley RAF Station during which the three Spitfires that were now Danish were presented to the small crowd of Danish men who had made this dream possible. He still didn’t know what he was doing there with them and Jørgen…That was definitely not his place, even though he was as Danish as they were… “My dear comrades, we are honoured to introduce to you for the very first time the three Spitfires that are now ours. They will come i

Winter had finally passed. But the ache in Karl’s heart had an intensity that could be compared to no other. It was like a wildfire burning an entire forest, leaving no survivor. Even the spring sun couldn’t light the slightest spark in his soul. He was thankful that Jørgen had come back. The latter knew about him. Karl had chosen to tell him since he was his closest friend, and after what they had had, he knew that Jørgen couldn’t judge him. “Listen, I know what’s going to cheer you u

He knew something was up. The commotion in the room surprised him as it was usually so calm. Except for maybe that time when he had first arrived… “They can’t do that!” “They won’t change their minds anyway. So there’s nothing we can do about it.” These were the two sentences that caught his attention. But why should they know something he didn’t? Were the people there trying to hide something from him? “What’s up?” He spoke so low that his voice couldn’t be heard.

A week passed, then two, three, four, but his heart and mind still couldn’t get a rest. He needed to go back to see George again. He needed to make sure he was okay, he needed to apologise for leaving him the way he did. What if he tried to kill himself again? He could never know for sure, but there was that intense feeling ingrained deep into him that could foreshadow nothing good. But it happened exactly like that last time when he had tried to sneak away during the night. Krist
