Chapter 8 - Intoxication
Adam Andrews Johnson posted new chapter in The Mantis Equilibrium - Book Two
At the God’s Hole Public House and Tavern, the innkeeper who worked behind the bar was addressed by a customer whose voice he did not recognize. “Do you know anything about that commotion earlier today at the market?” The barkeep turned to look at the stranger. “What’s that now?” he asked. “There were some officers who showed up. They were talking about murderers in Shifton.” After Vion and his inquisitors were denied access into the neighborhood, they returned to their b- 4 comments

Chapter 7 - Dozi's Family
Adam Andrews Johnson posted new chapter in The Mantis Equilibrium - Book Two
Sunrise spread over Bluewood Village, and Dozi rose with its glow. Ilya, Tchama, and Lahari were all still asleep. The mystic and Theolan spent the night in the adjoining room with Ninyani, and there was no sound coming from the shared wall. It was not like Dozi to be awake and alert so early, but she thought to herself that she was more excited about seeing her parents and brother than she expected. She lay in bed, quietly remembering her father’s smile, and wondering how much her little- 4 comments

Chapter 6 - Vion, Part Two
Adam Andrews Johnson posted new chapter in The Mantis Equilibrium - Book Two
Gate Town was the most welcoming region of Teshon City. The neighborhood at the entrance was made vibrant by the diversity of its inhabitants, the colorful murals that were painted on the outsides of many buildings, and the unique shops and taverns that catered to the Shifts who lived there. The cold winter wind that blew in off the harbor did not stop the inhabitants of Gate Town from being out and about under the grey sky. Near the small region that bordered the industrial district, and- 4 comments

Chapter 5 - Ninyani & Ilya
Adam Andrews Johnson commented on Adam Andrews Johnson's story chapter in Chapter 5 - Ninyani & Ilya
Right, he's not actually a Bio-Shift, but he's gone through such trauma that he was certainly not thinking clearly when he met Ilya and then arrived at the village with everyone else. And thank you all for reading ❤️ -
Chapter 5 - Ninyani & Ilya
Adam Andrews Johnson posted new chapter in The Mantis Equilibrium - Book Two
Ninyani stayed at his home in Frostflower, even as the body of his mother putrefied at the bottom of the basement stairs. The 14 year old boy did not know what he could possibly do. He was small, and there was nowhere else he could go. During his days alone, he scoured every building in the village for any signs of life. He found none. Ninyani did see several of the forest’s wild crystal dragons, but only on the first two days. With no people left to keep the traps armed, there was nothin- 6 comments

Chapter 4 - Gawa, Eroli, & S'Kay
Adam Andrews Johnson posted new chapter in The Mantis Equilibrium - Book Two
A trio of unusual individuals sat huddled around a small table. Each of them was unique. They spent several moments in silent awe, only occasionally breaking the quiet to express their feelings. Three mugs of dark beer sat on the tabletop. A woman with skin like mineral-rippled marble said, “It worked. It actually worked.” She looked like she was made of movable stone. When she spoke, her words seemed to reverberate inside of her. The strange patterns on her skin moved in a continuou- 5 comments

After the vast devastation of the underground one year prior, very few Biological Shifts were willing to remain beneath. Most moved to Gatetown, and in particular, the Shifton region that was safest for Shifts. A neighborhood watch was formed to help keep the inhabitants of Gate Town safe from those who would hunt them. Gate Town was always the most welcoming part of Teshon City, but the inhabitants of Shifton were now wary of outsiders. There used to be an unsaid understanding, if Shifts

Chapter 2 - Vion, Part One
Adam Andrews Johnson posted new chapter in The Mantis Equilibrium - Book Two
Sunrise stretched over Teshon City, but within one of the Messiah residences, there was no movement. No one stirred. None of the five people who fell asleep in that dormitory the night before, now awoke with the morning. Behind the thin veil of grey clouds, the sun crept up the winter sky. The city below began to stir, and the people started their daily activities. However, inside the Messiah residence, the five bodies remained unmoved. The hours slid by, and it was not until sunset- 4 comments

In the northern village of Frostflower, the winter solstice celebration was just coming to an end, but the chill of the season was already smothering the town in its frozen embrace. Snowdrifts were piled up against the sides of houses and icicles hung from every overhang. The evergreen forest that stretched across the surrounding region was also covered in a blanket of sparkling white. Ninyani always liked the cold. He was born in the village, and the high mountains that surrounded it wer

Chapter 35 - Epilogue 5 - The Beginning
Adam Andrews Johnson posted new chapter in The Mantis Variant - Book One
"We know what you're planning," Dozi declared, "and we're here to stop you!" She came stomping down the path that led into Eckelton with the mystic and Theolan behind her. The sun was rising. For most of the season, grey clouds were present above Teshon City and the surrounding area, but the sky was clear that morning. The winter haze would soon return. Auntie Peg and Ilya were seated at a table in the sun. Plates were in front of them, and the two looked up from their food towards t- 9 comments

Chapter 34 - Epilogue 4 - The End
Adam Andrews Johnson posted new chapter in The Mantis Variant - Book One
Ilya, Auntie Peg, and Lahari were halfway between Brokenpointe and Eckelton when she told them about her encounter the night before with the three men. There were no other travelers on the road to the tiny village, and the scarf she wore to hide her face was pulled down. "I killed them," Lahari concluded. "What do you mean? Where were the bodies this morning?" Auntie Peg asked her. "Their bodies disappeared." "What do you think they were going to do with us?" Ilya aske- 5 comments

Chapter 33 - Epilogue 3 - Journey
Adam Andrews Johnson posted new chapter in The Mantis Variant - Book One
Ilya, Lahari, and Auntie Peg walked out through the Teshon City gates. The morning sun was climbing the early-winter sky behind a veil of grey clouds. It was cold, and the three travelers were all bundled heavily, but none more so than Lahari. Every inch of her unique, scaly blue-grey skin was covered. She wore a thick jacket and trousers with boots and gloves. A knit cap and scarf hid her head, and dark snow goggles prevented anyone from seeing her yellow eyes. However, Lahari was not us- 5 comments

Chapter 32 - Epilogue 2 - Breakfast
Adam Andrews Johnson posted new chapter in The Mantis Variant - Book One
As the morning sun began to slide up the cloud-shrouded sky, many voices were shouting in anger. "Oi! Shut it!" "Will you please shut up?!" "Stop yelling!" "Do you know what time it is?!" Dozi was standing outside the mystic's apothecary. It was early, but she was trying to rouse the sleeping men. She did her best to ignore the other groggy inhabitants of the neighborhood who were upset with her. "What is that ruckus?!" "Shut up!" "Who's making a- 6 comments

Chapter 31 - Epilogue 1 - Plotting
Adam Andrews Johnson posted new chapter in The Mantis Variant - Book One
Later that night, when the two men were upstairs and the three young women were still seated by candlelight, Ilya commented, "What if we just did it ourselves." The two others looked at her with expectant expressions. "What do you mean?" Dozi asked. "Burn it to the ground," Ilya replied. Lahari nodded. "I'm in." Dozi frowned at them. "The Lovegoods?" she said in disbelief. "You know they're all Messiahs, right? How on earth do you think it would be possible to do t- 4 comments

Lahari could not remember the last time tears streamed from her yellow eyes, but they now poured down her cheeks. She and Ilya ran with the others up the stairs, and as they arrived in the meeting chamber, they heard a terrible rumbling from down below. Ilya collapsed to a chair and sobbed into her hands, as the bird woman started giving orders. "You three," she said, pointing at several people, "head down to the netherswamp. You two, go to the werefolk. A few of you need to check purgator

Agrell turned to the wall and smashed out another enormous section of stone to pile on top of the first. She knew the effort was futile, but she was determined to provide the others with as much time to escape as she possibly could. Multiple slabs of bedrock were ripped from the walls of the chamber by her empowered hands, and each impeded the progress of the magma, as it slowly melted them. Agrell stepped out into the hall and saw that everyone else was out of sight, but then her makeshi

Deep in the underground, above the well of fire, the object that came spiraling out of the chimney possessed the appearance of a winged sphere. Gravity pulled it towards the opening that led to the bubbling magma below, and as the thing spun downwards, it produced a shrill whistle. The noise interrupted the memorial that the Biological Shifts were holding at the well, and no one in the chamber knew what the thing was. The spinning orb traveled from the opening in the chimney to the well o

Chapter 27 - New Principal Messiah
Adam Andrews Johnson posted new chapter in The Mantis Variant - Book One
Within the tower, the Principal Messiah wailed in agony. She was one of the few still alive. From around the city, most of the other Messiahs were arriving, those who were not part of her assault on the underground. Only a single Biological Shift was among the dead. The corpse of the man with four arms still lay in a pool of blood at the top of the tower. Because Messiahs are virtually invincible, it was not necessary for the tower to contain any medical facilities. Besi- 5 comments

Chapter 26 - Underground, Part Three
Adam Andrews Johnson posted new chapter in The Mantis Variant - Book One
Lahari, Agrell, and Ilya helped the group of freed prisoners limp down the stairs within the Messiah Tower. The other Biological Shifts who were part of the rescue party dealt with the Messiahs below, and they escorted their kin out the entrance and into the Teshon City streets. Quite a few people were startled by the sight of them. To most of the abovelanders who were oblivious of the vast community that lived beneath their feet, the Biological Shifts appeared as monsters. Many citizens- 5 comments
