  1. Chapter 7 – Ronging Leaving the realm of monsters, Ronging set out to sate his unworldly desire. The expansive grasslands were easy enough to cross, but the distance took time. Over the recent decades, the inhabitants of Gunge learned that because of the witch, the nearest human village of Kestapoli was a poor hunting ground. She always knew when one of them was on the hunt, and she would be gone before they arrived. She was the prey that the monsters craved, she and those like
  2. I get it, and i'm sorry that there's a lot of darkness, and i don't want to give any spoilers, but there is light coming...
  3. In the hut beside Liovia’s hollow, Tisa awoke with a start. She sat bolt upright and listened. The forest was silent. She did not know what she heard, but something had made a brief horrible noise. Tisa pulled on her trousers and a fresh shirt, and she headed outside. Not a sound came from anything around her. Even the breeze seemed to have vanished. “Liovia?” Tisa called out to the witch. “Did you hear something?” Tisa was half-asleep, and she yawned and stretched. There was no repl
  4. Sumi and Harakin sat up in the darkness. The Voice was speaking. “Wake up, twins. It’s time.” The two young women waited, but the Voice said no more. “Get dressed,” whispered Sumi. “Training drills?” Harakin asked. Sumi shrugged. They both pulled on their nighttime mission gear, as the door to their dormitory opened. The man whom they referred to as the Voice entered, but he stopped in the doorframe and did not approach them. Sumi and Harakin ke
  5. Within the township of Tuilii la Ru, one block of warehouses served as the training facilities for the organic mechanics. Olona was an apprentice, but she was acutely aware that she had already surpassed her teachers. She felt like her masters were holding her back, though she would never voice those thoughts, at least not until the arduous process of training was eventually completed. Olona wanted to be a healer. She considered the Demifae practices to be quackery, and that mystics dabble
  6. Between the vast rolling plains of Xin and the mountains far to the north lies a narrow band of foothills that serves as a realm of monsters, a land of beasts. The twisted fiends who dwell therein are not part of normal society, and there they have made a vile home for themselves among the others who have chosen to slither the same villainous path. They call their region Gunge. The inhabitants are few in number and there is no village in their region. The choices that they made in their pas
  7. Yikes, ouch hahaha! 💥 there is some positiveness coming in this book 😻
  8. wow, thank you so much for those encouraging words! i'm so pleased that you enjoy my creativity, and the characters and world i've developed. You already know that my stories are a bit dark, but this one has some HOPE coming too ❤️
  9. The natural northern border to the land of Xin was formed by a mighty mountain range, and from those craggy peaks ran a powerful river, the Ru. Long ago, its waters carved its path that snaked through the western region for hundreds of miles. The river provides an abundance of fish for the people, as well as a means of transportation, and several villages dot the banks on its journey south. To the east, a vast region of rolling hills and dales stretches to the sea, but in the wastes beyond the R
  10. In the east are monsters. In the north is the witch. In the south is the capital. To the west is the waste. The land is called Xin. Life has been nothing but cruel to the children soldiers Sumi and Harakin. They were not expected to survive as long as they have. In the north, a child with shadows ventures to the witch's lair. In the south, an organic mechanic is expelled from her guild. How will these different individuals from a distant land connect to the events in Books One & Two? And what will happen with the monsters?
  11. Sumi and Harakin did not refer to their commander by his title. The two of them simply called him the Voice, and in the military compound where they were prisoners, his words were like an omniscient presence. They rarely saw him. “Wake up, twins,” said the Voice. Sumi and Harakin were not twins. They were not the same age. The two were not even related, nor did they share the same skin color, but because neither of the women was human, twins was the term that stuck. There was disdain a
  12. Thank you again, everyone! To give you a little tease, the beta-reader who was the very first person on the planet to read books 1-3 in this series described them as thus: The Mantis Variant - Book One = gory killy death stuff with adventures. The Mantis Equilibrium - Book Two = *goes to a drag show* The badies are getting killed and things are pretty good. The Mantis Corruption - Book Three = actual nightmare fuel not for anyone with a weak stomach. (i can't wait to share my third book with you all! Cheers!)
  13. wow, thank you so much for the kind words! i'm glad you felt strongly about my characters, and book three will be coming soon 💀 i can't wait for you to meet the new characters and see where the story goes!
  14. yes, that's a good comparison, but unlike the singular villain of the wicked witch of the west (who i named my dog after 😍), there are lots more Messiahs to come along and claim the position that has now been vacated. Thank you so much for reading my second story in this series!
  15. when i created Agrell's character, i knew right away what was going to happen to her, but with Eroli i didn't plan on his death until i had already written a lot of this book. i didn't initially realize when i was noting out the chapters that he was going to die, but partway through writing, i realized that his would be the most tragic of the four Bio-Shifts at the end... it was inevitable thank you so much for reading my second book!
  16. thank you incredibly much for sticking through it! the second part of the story felt like it needed to descend into the depths, so that what's coming in part three can be a strong contrast. i really hope you'll come back and see where all this is leading! also, part three is not the end, this is an ongoing series that i'm writing and some of my characters are going to have to grow and learn a lot in order to progress. again, thank you so much!
  17. Lahari launched herself up through the hole in the ceiling that Gawa blasted with her purple lightning, and she landed between Vion and the scantily-clad Principal Messiah. They were already stunned from the blast, but the two of them were even more shocked by Lahari’s physical appearance. Her unique blue scaly skin and black quills made her look armored, and her appearance seemed monstrous to the two Messiahs. “What the fuck are you?!” the woman shrieked from her bed. S’Kay and Gaw
  18. The Messiah who had been chasing Tchama was now dead in the street. An eldritch bolt of orange energy from some unseen Shift farther down collided with the woman and killed her instantly. Her two short swords were on the pavement beside her corpse. That radiant blast was powerful enough to destroy the Messiah, but it also grazed Tchama and left her utterly ruined. Ilya held her writhing body. One of the young woman’s arms was entirely gone and all that remained was the scorched and gory s
  19. The churning cloud of dust and debris from the fallen Messiah Tower was ahead of Vion, and he rushed towards it. He pulled his shirt collar up over his nose and mouth, squinted his eyes, and entered the haze. Visibility was no more than a few feet, and Vion made his way the best he could in the direction of the devastation. Broken chunks of masonry filled the street for several blocks as he approached the former temple’s base. He stepped over or around pieces that he recognized as recently havin
  20. “Hurry up,” Auntie Peg urged. Her voice sounded stressed. Ninyani’s hand was in hers as they rushed along. She made a frustrated noise and asked rhetorically, “Why didn’t Ilya fly back with you?” “Because you two were upset,” Ninyani replied. Auntie Peg gave his fingers a squeeze. “You’re not wrong about that,” she said. She then asked him, “You understand what we’re requesting of you, right? I can only begin to comprehend how much it means to you, but I agree with he
  21. Well-remembered! That is indeed what happened to the world and led to this current dystopia 💀 P.S. I really enjoy how strongly some readers are responding to these chapters! We've seen disappointment, frustration, sadness, even anger at some of my characters and their decisions.
  22. "Perhaps all should be wiped out..." haha 😅 well, that would make for a serious ending!
  23. Lahari found herself at the edge of the airfield. Eroli skirted along the coast at the tip of the peninsula and headed north towards the old airstrip. S’Kay slipped through the streets to the peninsula’s southern edge. She followed it west all the way past the industrial district and then turned north towards Gate Town. Gawa ended up near the old Oselian barracks and did not recognize the area. She ducked down an alley, grabbed a tarp from a pile of garbage, and wrapped herself
  24. Wow, thank you for saying this 💖 I adore the character who I created in Tchama, and I was really hoping that this point of the story would be where readers connected to her
  25. On the night of the solstice that previous summer, Tchama stayed up drinking as the late evening sun slowly set. She drank too much, then went wandering through the Teshon City streets. Her wobbly steps caused her to stumble down an alleyway, and her jacket got snagged on an old fan cage. She tugged at it drunkenly, but then she paused and noticed a low entrance that led somewhere unseen. The pavement sunk down underneath a portion of wall that stuck out and kept the opening almost entire
