  1. ‘You broke up with Paul?’ Oscar’s mouth dropped. ‘I thought you guys were serious?’ ‘Nah,’ Robert shook his head and shrugged. ‘Well, we only went on a few dates anyway. He’s a nice guy, nothing bad about him at all. Just didn’t feel much.’ ‘That’s the thing, isn’t it,’ Tom leaned forward. The holidays had finished and the gang were back at school, all sat on the cold field at this lunch time. ‘Best to cut it early before anyone really gets hurt.’
  2. ‘Love a party at Tom’s house,’ grinned Billy ‘Happy new year!’ screamed Sammy. ‘It’s not New Year yet!’ Daz shouted right back, laughing. It was New Year’s Eve and the gang were at Toms’ house. Tom’s team had won the football game this year so it was party round his, nearly everyone at school was there. Tom’s parents were very mellow and laughing along with relatives, there was genuine happy buzz of excitement in the air.
  3. It had been a few days now and none of the carers had spoken to him properly about what happened at the hospital. They would have been told, or should have been, they asked Kalum some question and not much happened after. There were so many new kids coming in they just didn’t have the time, Kalum assumed. Or they simply didn’t care. Or they didn’t have the time to care. Not that Kalum was offended by that, that was just the way things were around there. They on
  4. It was so bright when Kalum woke up. It was loud too. Harsh bleeping beep. Machines pumping next to him. The noise of people flooded over him. ‘He’s waking up.’ ‘Look, his eyes.’ ‘Okay, everyone let’s give him some room, come on, now.’ A man Kalum had never before, came into focus. It was all so bright and loud still. ‘Look you’re making him panic.’ Even in this state, Kalum
  5. ‘So, you’ve never been here before,’ Tom shouted over the noise. ‘I didn’t know you could get have a festival Carnivale this close to Christmas,’ shouted Robert back. The gang were walking through the carnival, there was bright colours, games, sweet pops ups. Families and friends rushed around them playing the games of ‘Grab the fish’, ‘Dunk the Santa’ and even more. Some babies started crying while adults were drinking and laughing with each other. Children ran
  6. ‘The holidays are coming!’ yelled Ronny as they ran into the shopping centre. The guys laughed as Daz said, ‘Best Christmas carol ever, go Coca-cola advert.’ The shopping mall glittered and the coloured lights were loud with green and red tinsel; giant baubles hung from the high ceilings. Christmas songs were jolly and bold. The smell of gingerbread was hot in the air. As the gang ran through the busy shopping, all Kalum could think of was the s
  7. ‘Wow, Jameson’s Diner,’ remarked Rosey as they entered the café. The café was large and pink and smelled strong of sizzling hot bacon. ‘Yeah,’ grinned Jasper as he held the door for all of them to go through. ‘Have you guys been before?’ ‘We love it here,’ smiled Kalum on que as he shut the door behind them. It was crowdy in the café, full of families, of students hanging out, and of couples on dates. But it didn’t feel too over
  8. ‘Stop it, Will is disgusting!’ ‘You got to give him a chance,’ Ronny raised his eyebrows, sniggering. ‘Bah, Humbug’ Sammy retorted, folding her arms. Everyone was laughing, teasing Sammy about a boy at the party who clearly had a crush on her. Everyone except Kalum. The vision of them hurt his eyes. Robert and that guy. They were in the corner laughing and whispering, they kept putting their hands on each other backs.
  9. It was a blurred vision. The halls were dark and long, the ceiling was taller. Kalum walked forward and saw a clear image of a door. He stretched his hand out and pushed it open. It eased open a little bit. He could hear grunting. The grunting was a horrible beast like noise. He saw a long bed. Everything around the room was out of focus and distorted, but the bed is large and far away from him. In the bed he saw a dark figure, a large dark giant. His brother
  10. It was the night of the competition and the gang were people of their word and they arrived and grabbed some seats at the back of the hall. ‘Stop squishing me,’ ‘You’re too big.’ ‘That’s insensitive.’ ‘Oh, stop being mean Ronny.’ ‘I am mean.’ Kalum smiled as his friends bickered in their seat. He felt his brother sit next to him laughing. He copied the laughter. ‘Shh!’ ‘Hello everyone,’ the headmaster announced on the stage. ‘Thank you all for coming, as

    Chapter 9

Kalum was able to hide his arm for two weeks with his long sleeves, never rolling them up once. He was relieved it was winter so no one questioned why he never rolled his sleeves up. He was also relieved that Robert hadn’t pushed again about Jasper. Even Mr Johnson hadn’t asked to speak to him after class again. Perhaps that was it. They had given up and decided to leave Kalum alone. Or maybe they would ask him again. Kalum couldn’t tell at this point. There wa

    Chapter 8

It was winter and that meant it was the gang’s traditional odd camp time. They set up in their usual place in the field but Ronny was showing Robert how to do smores properly without it burning up. ‘You’re definitely coming again next year,’ beamed Ronny as he stuffed his face with more food. Billy laughed and nudged Oscar, who was holding his hand. They were all sat around a fire that had took them hours to get going. ‘Listen t

    Chapter 7

It was science again, and Kalum was sat next to Robert. He must have noticed the jumper with the higher collar that Kalum was wearing because he frowned. Throughout their class experiments, Robert kept writing and passing over notes on different numbers and places. Domestic Abuse. Child abuse. Kalum kept erasing each and every one of them, hoping he would just stop it. But Robert kept frowning and doing it more. When class finished, they never s

    Chapter 6

Back in the library at lunch break, the gang were gathering papers for revision. The big mock exams were coming up and Daz had made them all come to the library to practise. ‘When your exams go great you can thank me,’ she told them all. ‘Better if you could just do the exams for us,’ Billy laughed as Oscar shook her head. The gang had settled into Billy and Oscar’s new relationship, nothing dramatic more happened. Just genuine happiness for the

    Chapter 5

‘Kalum,’ said Mr. Johnson. ‘Can you come here, just for two minutes please?’ Class had just finished and everyone was already packing up to go. Kalum felt the dread feeling in his stomach. He looked over at Jasper who nodded. He would wait for him outside. Shoving his backpack over his shoulder, he pulled his sleeves down to cover his hands. He walked over to Mr Johnson, his English teacher. Mr Johnson put down his papers, waiti

    Chapter 4

This year, everything was fast paced. It was Halloween now and one of Tom’s basketball friends, Bobby, was having a party. Everyone invited of course. Jasper and Kalum were dressed as Thing 1 and Thing 2. Kalum was demoted to Thing 2. Jasper had to be number one. Kalum thought about the Freddy Krueger costume he would rather have. Despite his dislike for horror, Kalum enjoyed the blood and theatrical parts of the gruesome customer and designs.

    Chapter 3

It smelt good in here. Kalum smelt good. He had put on the new aftershave on that Robert given him. Jasper had grudgingly used it too. They had to smell the same of course. Robert offered it to the twins during break the day before. ‘If that’s not a hint that you guys stink, I don’t know what is’ Tom raised a sharp eyebrow. Everyone laughed, and Kalum laughed too, catching the shiny glint in Robert’s eyes. The afte

    Chapter 2

It was mid-November and the sixteen-year-olds had decided that, with this cold wet horrible month, it would be a great time to go camping. ‘What if it snows?’ Oscar wrinkled her nose. Kalum silently agreed. ‘Snow angels?’ Sammy put her hand on her hip. ‘You walked right into that one, didn’t ya.’ As the gang laughed, Kalum glanced over at Robert. He just smiled and gave nothing els

    Chapter 1

Kalum noticed the new kid straight away. He also knew straight away that he would be welcomed warmly into the gang. The new guy had a grey jacket, black afro hair and he was quite slim too. ‘Give us the scoop, Daz,’ their leader Billy said, nudging their intel, Daz. Daz, who was the tallest girl in school with thick blonde hair, glanced over. The new kid was looking around the sea of people with an uneasiness in
  20. Kalum dealing with his bullying identical twin brother Jasper. Jasper controls everything that Kalum does and no one ever sees what’s really going on, until a new kid, Robert, joins the school. Robert makes Kalum question who he is as a person. Whilst this is ongoing, Kalum starts remembering parts of an accident he had when he was six years old. The more he tries to make sense of how he really feels about Robert and the more he tries to remember his accident the more aggressive and worse Jasper gets. As more insane memories come flooding back to Kalum, the more unexpected turns him and his friends face.
