For the next couple of weeks, Thomas is round at Zack’s place every day. They were doing the work in the office, but it became harder to hide the fact that Zack was staying behind doing more work so Zack offered him to finish the work at his apartment. It is now half six, Thomas is sat at the kitchen table typing up the documents on the work laptop and preparing the spreadsheets for the next week. Zack has gone for a quick shower. Thomas sits there typing up the

‘Yeah, it’s weird, isn’t it, though, am I wrong?’ Barry throws his arms up in the air, almost to challenge anyone. He laughs, and everyone laughs around him, shaking their head. Walking over, Thomas’s shoulders are tense, and his jaw clenched. ‘It’s not like a weird religious thing,’ Barry adds, smirking away to the huddle of people. ‘But, like, you’d spot them a mile away.’ ‘How so?’ Thomas asks, appearing in the huddle. He tilts his head as

Thomas has his own secrets from his past, who he used to be. Zack, Thomas's manager at work, has his own secrets too, with his health declining. At first, they both support each other in their secrets, physically and mentally. However, things get a lot more complicated when they begin to develop feelings for each other and Thomas's past gets more violently involved in his present and Zack's health keeps getting worse. Can they be there for each other, despite all that life throws at them?

Sammy is working their shift at the charity call centre when they starts speaking with a frequent caller called Tom, a vulnerable teenager, someone they try to help.

‘Causing trouble again, Tom?’ I laugh, leaning back on my chair, my phone headset on. ‘Is she crying?’ I can’t see his face, but I know he is smirking, it’s in the tone of his voice. I shake my head and smile more despite myself, ‘She only started yesterday, you got to give her a break.’ ‘Only yesterday, Pft, I thought she had started this morning!’ I laugh alongside with him. I can hear traffic in the backgroun

As Kalum sat in the car back to the care home, he felt like someone had cut him in half. He didn’t know how to feel without Jasper prodding him next to him. It was very weird sensation. He was sat the back of the large car while the social worker drove, humming. He took out his phone and saw all the messages of support from the gang. The radio suddenly announced, ‘this is the headline news. A teenage boy has been charged with the attempted murders of a school in

The hospital was beeping around Kalum. It was exhausting opening his eyes. Smells of metal and chemicals again. He managed to fully open his eyes and look around. There was that lady detective he was speaking to. She was outside the glass door. She was talking to a doctor; they both peered in and saw he was awake. They both came in and closed the door behind them, but closed it with extreme care. ‘How are you feeling Kalum?’ the doctor asked as the detective s

‘So, Kalum is at the hospital?’ ‘Yeah, he just collapsed.’ ‘Okay, okay,’ the male detective rushed around gathering folders. ‘Jasper is in the interrogation room, right?’ The female detective was on the other side of the phone. She replied, ‘Yeah, he will be ready for you. I’ll stay here at the hospital; they’re doing a scan now. See what’s going on with Kalum.’ ‘Keep me updated.’ ‘Same.’ The ma

Robert waited a long time to see the detectives, it was too long and he couldn’t wait any longer. He needed more support on this. He needed backup. He couldn’t speak to the care home, they had done such a crap job as it was. They only realised something was wrong the day Kalum was knocked out and went to hospital and that nurse picked it up. The nurse. Robert left the police station and made his way to the hospital.

The station was busy, it smelt of cheap air freshener and sweat. There was a baby crying at reception and a guy arguing with the receptionist with a queue behind him. There were couples sitting together in the waiting area, a few people coughing. People were arguing with each, police officers weaving in and out the reception. Robert took a deep breath and waited behind the line of people at reception. After the guy in front of him swore and flipped off the exhau

The gang looked up. It was break time and they were in the library, and they heard herds of horrified screams and crying. ‘What the hell?’ muttered Tom, standing up. A bunch of students threw themselves into the library, hysterically crying. Some of them were slamming their bodies up against the door, while other boarding up the door with tables and chairs. One of the students turned around, with teary eyed glared at Kalum and pointed at him, ‘I

Later on, when they were walking onto the field to watch Tom’s game, Robert tugged at Jasper. ‘Hey, can I just have a quick word?’ Robert said, his voice low. Jasper watched the gang climb to their seats, and he looked back and shrugged at Robert, ‘Sure. You know I’m not Kalum, right?’ ‘I know,’ Robert said in almost cold tone. They went a little behind the bleachers. ‘What’s up?’ Jasper said, calm.

The twins were in their bedroom getting ready for bed. As he pulled his pyjama top over his head, Kalum bit his tongue. He knew the outcome was going to be very bad but he needed to just go for it. ‘What?’ Jasper bluntness snapped out of him. Kalum sighed and leaned against their bedroom wall. ‘Is that rock climbing thing on twenty-eighth?’ asked Jasper as he pulled his pyjama trousers on. ‘You’ll be fine. Just

‘You broke up with Paul?’ Oscar’s mouth dropped. ‘I thought you guys were serious?’ ‘Nah,’ Robert shook his head and shrugged. ‘Well, we only went on a few dates anyway. He’s a nice guy, nothing bad about him at all. Just didn’t feel much.’ ‘That’s the thing, isn’t it,’ Tom leaned forward. The holidays had finished and the gang were back at school, all sat on the cold field at this lunch time. ‘Best to cut it early before anyone really gets hurt.’

‘Love a party at Tom’s house,’ grinned Billy ‘Happy new year!’ screamed Sammy. ‘It’s not New Year yet!’ Daz shouted right back, laughing. It was New Year’s Eve and the gang were at Toms’ house. Tom’s team had won the football game this year so it was party round his, nearly everyone at school was there. Tom’s parents were very mellow and laughing along with relatives, there was genuine happy buzz of excitement in the air.

It had been a few days now and none of the carers had spoken to him properly about what happened at the hospital. They would have been told, or should have been, they asked Kalum some question and not much happened after. There were so many new kids coming in they just didn’t have the time, Kalum assumed. Or they simply didn’t care. Or they didn’t have the time to care. Not that Kalum was offended by that, that was just the way things were around there. They on

It was so bright when Kalum woke up. It was loud too. Harsh bleeping beep. Machines pumping next to him. The noise of people flooded over him. ‘He’s waking up.’ ‘Look, his eyes.’ ‘Okay, everyone let’s give him some room, come on, now.’ A man Kalum had never before, came into focus. It was all so bright and loud still. ‘Look you’re making him panic.’ Even in this state, Kalum

‘So, you’ve never been here before,’ Tom shouted over the noise. ‘I didn’t know you could get have a festival Carnivale this close to Christmas,’ shouted Robert back. The gang were walking through the carnival, there was bright colours, games, sweet pops ups. Families and friends rushed around them playing the games of ‘Grab the fish’, ‘Dunk the Santa’ and even more. Some babies started crying while adults were drinking and laughing with each other. Children ran

‘The holidays are coming!’ yelled Ronny as they ran into the shopping centre. The guys laughed as Daz said, ‘Best Christmas carol ever, go Coca-cola advert.’ The shopping mall glittered and the coloured lights were loud with green and red tinsel; giant baubles hung from the high ceilings. Christmas songs were jolly and bold. The smell of gingerbread was hot in the air. As the gang ran through the busy shopping, all Kalum could think of was the s

‘Wow, Jameson’s Diner,’ remarked Rosey as they entered the café. The café was large and pink and smelled strong of sizzling hot bacon. ‘Yeah,’ grinned Jasper as he held the door for all of them to go through. ‘Have you guys been before?’ ‘We love it here,’ smiled Kalum on que as he shut the door behind them. It was crowdy in the café, full of families, of students hanging out, and of couples on dates. But it didn’t feel too over

‘Stop it, Will is disgusting!’ ‘You got to give him a chance,’ Ronny raised his eyebrows, sniggering. ‘Bah, Humbug’ Sammy retorted, folding her arms. Everyone was laughing, teasing Sammy about a boy at the party who clearly had a crush on her. Everyone except Kalum. The vision of them hurt his eyes. Robert and that guy. They were in the corner laughing and whispering, they kept putting their hands on each other backs.

It was a blurred vision. The halls were dark and long, the ceiling was taller. Kalum walked forward and saw a clear image of a door. He stretched his hand out and pushed it open. It eased open a little bit. He could hear grunting. The grunting was a horrible beast like noise. He saw a long bed. Everything around the room was out of focus and distorted, but the bed is large and far away from him. In the bed he saw a dark figure, a large dark giant. His brother

It was the night of the competition and the gang were people of their word and they arrived and grabbed some seats at the back of the hall. ‘Stop squishing me,’ ‘You’re too big.’ ‘That’s insensitive.’ ‘Oh, stop being mean Ronny.’ ‘I am mean.’ Kalum smiled as his friends bickered in their seat. He felt his brother sit next to him laughing. He copied the laughter. ‘Shh!’ ‘Hello everyone,’ the headmaster announced on the stage. ‘Thank you all for coming, as

Kalum was able to hide his arm for two weeks with his long sleeves, never rolling them up once. He was relieved it was winter so no one questioned why he never rolled his sleeves up. He was also relieved that Robert hadn’t pushed again about Jasper. Even Mr Johnson hadn’t asked to speak to him after class again. Perhaps that was it. They had given up and decided to leave Kalum alone. Or maybe they would ask him again. Kalum couldn’t tell at this point. There wa

It was winter and that meant it was the gang’s traditional odd camp time. They set up in their usual place in the field but Ronny was showing Robert how to do smores properly without it burning up. ‘You’re definitely coming again next year,’ beamed Ronny as he stuffed his face with more food. Billy laughed and nudged Oscar, who was holding his hand. They were all sat around a fire that had took them hours to get going. ‘Listen t
